Carefree Truth

Issue #159, April 12, 2012

Patty Meese, a Parkinson's Disease patient, made a presentation to the Council requesting that April be proclaimed Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month.  She pointed out that increased awareness generates money for research for and special programs providing both physical and emotional support to those with Parkinson's Disease.

She had almost lost her voice but now is part of a singing group of Parkinson's patients and their partners who will be singing the National Anthem at a Diamondbacks game this month. When she began the exercise and physical therapy program, her posture was stooped, she shuffled, and she dragged her left leg. Due to lack of balance, she could no longer ride her bike or wear high heeled shoes. She is riding her bike once again, and made her presentation wearing high heels.

The Council voted unanimously to proclaim April as Carefree Parkinson’s Disease Awareness Month.
