Carefree Truth

Issue #282, October 31, 2013

During Call to the Public at the September Council meeting, partners Sara Vannucci and Scott Dahne introduced their new web based newspaper, the Desert Foothills Chronicle.  Mrs. Vannucci explained that it is for the people of Cave Creek, Carefree, and the surrounding area.  It is a non-profit entity and will be used to support the local merchant community and non-profit organizations.

Their goal is to present the facts and honest opinions on items of local importance, and unlike another local newspaper, they will publish opinions from all sides, not just those that agree with their positions.  Guest editorials are welcome, as are pro and con viewpoints on issues, but outright personal attacks of public figures will not be tolerated.  "Disagreement is fine; name calling is disrespectful and will not be published."

The first edition was published on August 6th.  The Chronicle will be published weekly online on Wednesdays.  People can subscribe to it on their website and they will receive it via email.  "We will be web based because that's the way of the future."  Access is available at all times on computers, mobile devices, and tablets.

Scott Dahne explained that the website is easy to navigate.  The Homepage contains stories on Breaking News, Ongoing Issues, and Community, with tabs for Home, News, Opinions, Archives, and About Us.  Logos submitted by local non-profit organizations will be displayed along the right hand side of the page.  The top of the page has a rotating slide show of beautiful desert photos.

Also included is a page for the Towns' meeting agendas and links to information pertinent to upcoming agenda items.  There is an Events Calendar to which local organizations and towns can add their events.  Business advertising will be free until the end of 2013, and will always be free to the non-profits.  "It's about giving back to the community, not about being a for-profit business."  The Chronicle is staffed entirely by volunteers.

Vice Mayor Les Peterson said, "Thank you, absolutely."  His comment was followed by applause from the Council and the audience.  Mrs. Vannucci added that the Chronicle includes a link to Carefree Truth "to share all the wonderful things happening in Carefree."   Mayor David Schwan thanked Mrs.  Vannucci and Mr. Dahne for their presentation and their efforts.
