Carefree Truth

Issue #331, July 7, 2014

Peter Strupp, representing the Foothills Community Foundation (FCF) and the Desert Foothills Theater (DFT), gave a lively presentation about the possibility of including a performance venue and community facility in the potential expansion of the current Town Hall at 8 Sundial Circle.  Mr. Strupp informed the Council and audience that DFT will be entering its 40th Season in the Desert Foothills area.  During its 39th Season, 8,318 tickets were sold.  Over the next 5 years, DFT anticipates consistent audience attendance, drawing over 30,000 people.

Live theater by the sundial would increase foot traffic in downtown Carefree and enhance quality of life through performing arts attendance and participation.  The performing artists would gain enhanced visibility by being located on "Main Street"; residents and visitors would gain increased access to national and international performing artists.  DFT anticipates providing live theater and guest performances, movies, and caberet/comedy.  Along with theatrical productions, DFT offers many multi generational educational programs including acting, voice, dance, improv, youth camps, and workshops.  Residents and visitors would also be welcomed to attend some theatrical rehearsals.  The expanded building could house the Council Chambers, as well as providing downtown conference/wedding/event space, and could serve as a public social gathering place.

Carefree would benefit by increasing town center revitalization achieved through partnering with a well established and economically sustainable organization.  This partnership would build on and strengthen Carefree's cultural brand, and would provide a multi use facility in the downtown. It would provide FCF/DFT, as the lead tenant, with an expanded community presence on "Main Street", and would allow for an expansion of its programs, as well as providing access to the Carefree Desert Gardens and the Sanderson/Lincoln Pavilion, a win/win scenario.

Success would require achievement of a capital campaign fund raising goal, raising operational funds, and public enthusiasm for the project.   While this is just the first step on a long road, it seems to show great promise for the entities involved.  Part 2 of this issue will highlight the Council discussion following Mr. Strupp's presentation.
