Carefree Truth

Recently, Carefree citizens collected signatures from voters for two ballot initiatives.  The November 4, 2014 ballot will contain 2 Propositions for consideration by Carefree voters.  A "Yes" vote on the 1st, Prop. #488, would change the Council terms from 2 year to staggered 4 year terms.  As it currently stands, voters in Carefree elect 6 Council members and the Mayor every 2 years.  6 Council members and the Mayor will again be elected in 2016.  Elections will still be held every 2 years, but should the Props. pass, 3 Council members would run during the 2018 election.  The Mayor and 3 Council members would run during the 2020 election.  As per Arizona state law, lots would be drawn to see which 3 Council members would run in 2018. 

On the 2nd, Prop. #489, a "Yes" vote would change the Mayor term from a 2 year to a 4 year term, making it consistent with the Council terms on Prop. 488.  This is required as a separate amendment because the Carefree Mayor is directly elected by the voters, and as such, a separate Ordinance exists stating that the Mayor is directly elected and serves for a specified term, currently 2 years.

Only 5 towns in Arizona now elect all 7 members every 2 years.  These towns are Carefree, Cave Creek, Tombstone, Jerome, and Hayden.  All other cities and towns utilize the 4 year staggered terms model, assuring continuity.

Initiative IN2014-01 has been assigned Proposition Number 488 for the purpose of the ballot.

 

Initiative IN 2014-02 has been assigned Proposition Number 489 for the purpose of the ballot.
