Carefree Truth

Issue #359, December 5, 2014

Councilwoman Melissa Price was pleased to announce that a full time position for a Communications and Marketing Director has been filled.  The Town of Carefree has a very small staff of only 15.  For comparison, Cave Creek employs 26-28 staffers.  As Carefree has been ramping up economic development activities in the town center, the Council has been considering adding this position for three years.

Gina Kaegi, a Carefree resident with over 20 years of marketing experience, was chosen.  She will initiate and coordinate events, working with event promoters, and will direct and further Town marketing and branding efforts.  She will also act as a liaison between residents and businesses.  Ms. Kaegi starts work on Monday, December 8th.

Vice Mayor Les Peterson, who along with Ms. Price and Gary Neiss, comprised the interviewing team, said they received 63 responses to the ad, which were whittled down to 6 very qualified finalists.  He felt there was "no doubt in any of our minds" that Ms. Kaegi was the best candidate.  She has knowledge and leadership skills, and the ability to work with a wide variety of people.  She is a Carefree resident who wants to be here.

Councilman John Crane thanked the approximately 150 people who attended the Carefree Veterans Day celebration on November 11th.   Veterans support groups The Veterans Heritage Project, Packages from Home, the Association of the U.S. Army, and the Honor House made presentations and had tables set up along the sides of the Pavilion.  They reported strong donations that day, as well as identifying new volunteers, and veterans they could help.

The event also received great support from Carefree Kiwanis and Cactus Shadows High School students.  My Sweet Blessings Bakery, a new Carefree business located in the 100 Easy Street building, down the side hall from the Carefree Post Office, spontaneously offered to bake a cake, and delivered it to the Pavilion at 3:00 that afternoon.

Paid ads were placed in the Scottsdale Republic and the CITYSunTimes, but both publications provided addition free PR.  Images AZ Magazine included a paragraph.  Lyn Hitchon repeatedly provided mentions in Carefree Truth, and did a nice narrative of the event.  The Sonoran News ran a front page article, and Don Sorchych touched on the program in an editorial.

Mr. Crane said he would like to hear from anyone who has ideas or suggestions for improvements on next year's Veterans Day celebration.

Mayor David Schwan expressed his appreciation of Mr. Crane for continuing the tradition started by then Councilwoman Susan Vanik, and next picked up by then Councilman Arthur Gimson.  The Mayor thanked Mr. Crane for volunteering to run the Veterans Day event again in 2015.
