Carefree Truth

Issue #360, December 8, 2014

As Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC) celebrates it's 5th year in the Desert Foothills area, College President Dr. Paul Dale presented an overview to the Carefree Council.  PVCC operates in partnership with the Community Foothills Foundation (FCF) and the YMCA, and works with the local schools.  He thanked the citizens of Carefree for passing the General Obligation bond in 2004 that enabled the PVCC campus.  Over 5000 students have participated in the General Education Program.  Dr. Dale introduced Loretta Mondragon, who continued the presentation with the Academic Highlights.

PVCC offers dual enrollment to Cactus Shadows High School (CSHS) students, and a highly competitive Early College program.  EMT/Justice courses are available.  Associate Degrees are issued.  There are on-site advisors as well as on-site enrollment.  Course credits are transferable to universities.

The Community College holds Star Gazing Parties throughout the year.  STEAMtatic/AZScitech attracted over 200 students, qualifying it as a Signature Event.  PVCC participates in Relay for Life-Cave Creek/Carefree, summer youth programs with non profits, Carefree/Cave Creek Chamber of Commerce events, Fiesta Days and Anthem Days, the FCF Community Spelling Bee, and high school and middle school college information sessions.

Due to their student growth rate over the past 5 years, PVCC has outgrown the current building.  A slide on the video shows the location of the new building, Aquila Hall, in relation to the existing building, and another slide shows the elevation.  Aquila Hall, named for the eagle constellation, will contain 4 general purpose classrooms, 2 science specific classrooms, a computer lab, a tutoring center, an astrology high powered viewing deck, faculty offices, and student study/collaboration areas.

Dr. Dale returned to the podium to invite the Council members and the public to the official groundbreaking ceremony, which will also include recognizing those community leaders who helped raise the funds.  He said the new building will make PVCC into a more comprehensive campus.  PVCC is always looking for ways to strengthen their engagement in terms of helping build an increased quality of life within the community.

Councilman Glenn Miller said, "Very good!"  Vice Mayor Les Peterson expressed delight to see PVCC so successful.

The official ground breaking ceremony took place on December 4th.  Carefree Vice Mayor Peterson was one of the people wielding a ceremonial shovel to start the process.
