Issue #435, October 23, 2015

The Grand Opening of the Kiwanis Splash Park took place at the splash pad last Sunday, October 18th.  Kiwanian Manny Gonzales introduced Carefree Marketing Director Gina Kaegi, who thanked everyone for coming to the Grand Opening, as well as to the Enchanted Pumpkin Garden.  She pointed to "Kiwani" the upright scorpion feature behind her, saying he "takes the sting out of summer".

Carefree has many events planned for this Season, from cultural events to family friendly ones like the Pumpkin Festival.  Mrs. Kaegi said Carefree loves kids and that the wide variety of residents, from kids to retirees, is what makes this such a great place to live. She then introduced Councilman Gene Orrico, there to represent both the Town of Carefree and The Carefree Kiwanis Club as Vice President of the Kiwanis Board of Directors, thanking him for his time and effort.

Mr. Orrico beckoned the rest of the Carefree Council, Mayor Les Peterson, Vice Mayor John Crane, Councilwoman Melissa Price, Councilman Bob Gearhart, and Councilman Glenn Miller, to join him on the splash pad (Councilman Mike Farrar was unable to attend), recognizing them for their confidence in the project, and for their votes.  Pastor Jim Noble dedicated the splash pad.

Mr. Orrico then called past Kiwanis President Bob Swan and current President West Hunsaker forward to present the oversized symbolic check for $135,000.  He repeated the Kiwanis motto, "Taking Care Of One Child At A Time".  He recognized Ryan from SplashZone, the company that built the splash pad, and Glenn Miller, who acted as project manager.  He also thanked Desert Foothills Landscaping for the beautiful Gardens in which the splash pad sits.  Mr. Orrico reminded everyone that Melissa Price had the original concept for a splash pad, and said Toby Payne was the Kiwanis member who brought the opportunity to participate to the attention of the Club.  He added that the donation was made possible by all the folks from the Kiwanis Club and Foundation of Carefree.

The area was cleared and the splash pad was activated.  Mr. Gonzales pointed out the water coming from "Kiwani's" pinschers and tail.  The Opening was great fun and a big success.
