Issue #471, March 21, 2016
Councilwoman Melissa Price pointed out that the lease for the current Council chambers at 100 Easy Street will be ending soon, and asked where meetings would be held. Gary Neiss said the Town had been holding discussions with the Spirit in the Desert Lutheran Retreat Center, which has space available at a very nominal rate, and which might even be provided free to the Town for meetings.
The only issue is that during the Season the Retreat sometimes hosts large events which use the conference spaces. Town meetings might occasionally be bumped around to various conference rooms, based on Retreat event requirements. If all the spaces are in use, meetings will be held in the Carefree Fire Station community room, which is internal to the Carefree organization. Carefree's audio/visual equipment is mobile. Toby Payne, who installed the Town's equipment, is installing a system at the Retreat, so it is possible that equipment could be utilized for Town meetings, or both systems could be used. Mr. Neiss said progress is being made.
Councilman Mike Farrar asked for a room size comparison between the Retreat and the current Council chambers. Mr. Niess said the Retreat Sanctuary is slightly larger. "It's a very nice facility." Vice Mayor John Crane commented that the Town will save at least $10,000 a year over what is now being paid in rent for the space at 100 Easy Street. Councilman Gene Orrico said it would be much more.
Mr. Farrar commended Town Marshall Kevin Stuckey for the great job he is doing, and for going "above and beyond". He's heard nothing but positive comments about Mr. Stuckey and his job performance.
Ms. Price announced that the splash pad would be opening in April. Marketing Directory Gina Kaegi would be sending out a press release with the date. (The splash pad will be opening on April 1.) She also reported that the Gateways kick-off meeting would be held that week. The contractors are coming together, and the project is moving along.
