Dear Carefree Voter,
Just weeks ago the electorate chose Carefree Town Council and the Council appointed me as Mayor. The Council election and the selection of Mayor were contentious and closely decided. But the process was legal and proper and, following American tradition, a majority of voters decided the issues.
On June 29, two individuals filed a recall petition against me to force a new election in March, 2010.
In my opinion, a recall should be used for reasons of gross misconduct, violations of the law or serious offenses in office. A recall is not appropriate simply to undo a closely decided election.
The allegations made against me are frivolous, partial misstatements of facts, and outright lies. They border on libel. Citizens should critique their elected officials. I welcome thoughtful, constructive criticism and I encourage citizens to attend and to participate in Council meetings. Personal attacks, divisive maneuvers, constant “nay-saying” and harassment of elected officials detract from the efforts of the majority to form an effective local government. Supporting an unpopular position is not a problem. Speaking out in a constructive way is not a problem. Failing to accept the results of an election is a problem.
One petitioner, Rod de Szendeffy of Carefree, has never been involved in town government or run for office or served on any committees in the government. Several years ago he wanted a zoning variance; I voted for enforcement of Carefree Zoning and against his variance. He continued his dispute and lost in court. The other petitioner is Ryan Ducharme, of Chandler. Mr. Ducharme is a paid political consultant who worked on David Burnell Smith’s failed Carefree Town Council campaign. It’s hard to believe that either of these individuals cares enough about Carefree or Council to launch this attempt to over-throw election results. In my opinion, they are acting for others who could personally benefit from a new election.
I would suggest you ask the recall petitioners who they will run against me in a possible election in March, 2010. I think you have a right, as a citizen, to know who might replace me on Carefree Town Council. It is a simple question, “Who is your candidate?”
I think I detect an odor of sour grapes. You can’t make good wine with sour grapes. And you can’t form an effective government if a few divisive, disruptive people refuse to accept the results of an honest election.
It’s time for Carefree to come together - please do NOT sign the recall petition.
Sincerely,
David Schwan
