Letter from Hans Thiele
In the October 28-November 3 issue of the Sonoran News, Don Sorchych wrote the following in his My View column. "First of all the sudden rush to civility by the GOBs and Hans Thiele is consistent with the world infamous Rodney King, who muttered, 'Why can't we all get along?' In other words let me be a bad dude and not complain." In the same column, Mr. Sorchych wrote, "I am a four year Navy veteran. I have always said it was a good investment since I got four years of a GI bill due to my service, but I also believe I have a right to support vets or not depending on the circumstances."
I received the letter below from Hans Thiele. By way of explanation for those who do not attend Council meetings, Mr. Thiele stood up on several occasions during Call to the Public and requested civility from those on both sides of the recall issue. He presented the Sonoran News and each member of Council with a copy of George Washington's book, "Rules of Civility & Decent Behaviour In Company and Conversation". I added the quote from Samuel Adams.
Lyn Hitchon
Hello Lyn,
I am glad to see that, despite the efforts of our local newspaper to resort to distortions and ad hominem attacks, civility seems to have returned to Carefree Town government. After a bit of a shaky start, our Town Council appears to be doing good positive things for Carefree. Mayor Schwan and the Council, strike me as being on top of things. The effect of George Washington’s little red book has been nothing short of amazing. Now, if we could only convince the editor of our local newspaper to read the book and abide by it, hostilities could be terminated and the Carefree Town Council War would be over.
Oh, the last time I looked into the mirror, I did not look anything like Rodney King. As a matter of fact, I also served over 4 years in our armed services, in the US Army Field Artillery, and had opportunity to be shot at with real bullets in Viet Nam, got mortared several times and darn near got myself blown to kingdom come by IEDs. While “Charley” failed to even scratch me, he was not so lucky on several occasions when it was my turn.
So, while I am not looking for a fight with the editor of the local paper, I am also not afraid of his paper bullets. I will stand my ground and do my best to be a positive force in our community. Should the editor of the local paper wish to discuss this matter with me, I would be pleased to do so. The choice is his. He would find that I hold no malice toward him or any one else in Carefree. Our telephone number is listed in the local directory.
Hans J. Thiele
