(Lyn's note: Please feel free to send us any pictures you'd like included. If your photos are for sale, let us know and we will put them under that category. We have a special section for that purpose. If anyone would like to buy a print of any of Herbert's photos, all profits will be donated to one of the local non-profit organizations.) Glenn Miller, congratulations on the award you got from the Town of Carefree. However, the award you deserve and have earned has not been made yet.
As a resident and volunteer God Bless You!

Lyn:
There is not a plaque, nor the Mayor’s Award, that can truly reflect all of the things that Glenn Miller does for the Town of Carefree. There is not a festival or event in Town when one doesn’t see Glenn’s total preparedness to help out. When I was the Chair for two Salute Our Veterans events, he was always there to help out with chairs, tables, electricity, sound systems, etc. And, equally important, he was there to assist with the tear-down and ensuring that everything was properly secured. Over the last ten-plus years, I have seen him working on the Christmas lights in the Carefree Desert Garden, helping out with the snow, making sure that all vendors had power if needed, working on the new shade treatment for the Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion, and the lights and sound systems, etc. You name it, Glenn is there to do it. Glenn is an example of why there should not be term limits for elected officials.

(Lyn's note: And he never does it to get credit or to draw attention to himself. He truly cares about the community and its residents.)
Lyn, I wanted to get you the "truth" on the unraveling of My Sweet Blessings Bakery at 100 Easy Street. You may know we officially opened last May 2014. For nearly 8 months we have worked tirelessly to provide a great experience for our beloved Carefree clients. Last week on Tuesday January 6th we received a letter from our property manager Morgan Klemp that we were in breach of our lease contract. We had 3 days to remedy this matter, or we would be "forbidden" access to the space. The notice stated that we had not fulfilled our commitment to painting the entire exterior of the building, and we were past due on the first year's rent and appropriate taxes. Additionally we were being assessed penalties to the tune of $2000.00 for lack of insurance coverage on the property. This was a tremendous surprise to us as business owners conducting our affairs in good faith. We personally had invested more the $50,000.00 of our cash and resources into the property, we had an agreement with the building's owner Ray Klemp to abate the first years rent in lieu of $10,000.00 worth of "infrastructure" improvements to his building, including a new gas line, and air conditioning system. (Note: painting the entire building was never discussed as a condition of our lease.) The insurance policy to protect Mr. Klemp's interests has been in force since May of 2013. For your information, rental payments were to commence in October 2014. We have billing invoices, and copies of checks Klemp properties accepted since that time. The notice of breach on Tuesday was a real blindsided blow. Until that point in time, we have had no other communications from Klemp that we were past due on any of these amounts. Since I personally saw Ray Klemp on a weekly basis, and we spoke of his future plans for the property frequently, this action was nothing short of astonishing. To our way of thinking, we were paid well in advance. I am still in a state of shock over how quickly all of this happened. Friday night January 9th, after repeated attempts, and not hearing back from the Klemps, we had no other choice than to remove our possessions from the space. We could not risk any further losses. At this point, the door locks have been changed, and we are now at the mercy of the legal system to see how this will play out. My greatest disappointment in this entire situation is knowing 5 well educated (three of whom are classically trained chefs), truly ambitious young people with good character, are temporarily unemployed! This makes me sick actually. Is this the reward? Really? It is our hope to find a new home in Carefree Town quickly, re-group and re-open. We cannot let such selfish and evil behavior prevail, but we cannot do it without the loyalty and support from our friends there in Carefree. We really need your help. Thank you for graciousness, and taking the time hear our story.
Very Truly,
Joseph J. "Joe" Hills

Hi Lyn,
Wow! Always great photos by Dr. Herbert but these are smashing! I’m on the West side in a meeting but if I was anywhere near the Alberto’s…Bistro…Binks…Tea Room, Trattoria, I would be riding in…tying up and running in for a cocktail and these bites. Magnificent job.
Yours,
Jane
Ms. Hitchon -
I guess, perhaps, I don't understand American humor. Seems to me that receiving a check with a zero amount and accentuated by a bunch of zeros tells the recipient that his efforts are worth absolutely nothing. Were it me receiving this "award," I would be very highly insulted. But maybe the recipient ("Glenn"?) is not very high on the intelligence scale. Appears to me that the mayor was attempting to enhance his position in a very visual manner and at the expense of making "Glenn" the mayor's, or the village's, lackey. No? Do I read this incorrectly?
Maitland
(Lyn's note: It's totally the opposite of how you are reading it. Many of us who do a lot of volunteer work for the Town, and no one does more than Glenn, joke that we want to see an extra zero added to the end of our paycheck the following month. We don't get paychecks. The whole thing is a long running joke. Glenn is the one who started it. Did you watch the video? If you listened to the words spoken, it was pretty obviously a fun agenda item. By the way, call me Lyn.)
I will watch the video. A bit silly, the whole thing, don't you think? I wonder if the rest of the village population gets this inside joke? Being a new arrival, I took it as an insult to this "Glenn" and a way for the mayor to build-up his stature at the expense of poor "Glenn." But I have a lot to learn about Carefree and environs.
Thanks for the clarification, even if it was a comedy meant for the insiders.
Maitland
(Lyn's note: David Schwan is one of the more quiet, modest, and non show boat people on the planet. A thoroughly nice man. Almost everyone who lives here knows Glenn Miller. He is constantly helping everyone. Both men are the best. Carefree, overall, is a pretty happy place. You choose wisely, my friend.)
Lyn:
Can you please tell me where to look to see announcements for, or the details of, when the mayor and village advisors/committee-persons meet? Is this a public meeting? And is the public always invited? And where and what time do they meet?
Thanks awfully, cheers,
Maitland
(Lyn' note: Go to the Town of Carefree website, www.carefree.org. All the meetings are listed on it. You can also sign up there for COINS to be emailed to you. That's a great source of official info, including meeting notices.
All meetings and workshops are open to the public. In fact, we'd love to see more participation. I'm on P&Z, and nobody who isn't directly impacted ever shows up at ours, and by that I mean the applicant and maybe an adjacent neighbor. We are lonely!!!!)
Ah . . . Carefree."org." I was doing carefree.com. My error and I am thankful for the correction. I take it that "P&Z is plans and zoning, or outlining of various boundaries/limits for projects in the village?
Thank you,
Maitland
(Lyn's note: P&Z is the Planning and Zoning Commission. We hear zoning issues, and are the ones who work with staff to update the General Plan, which must by law be done every 10 years, and the amend the zoning ordinances. We also act as the Development Review Board (we're having a DRB meeting on Monday at 5 PM, if you'd like to see what we do) which looks at hillside home development and commercial buildings, and the Board of Adjustment, which hears requests for variances. P&Z and DRB make recommendations to the Council. BoA is a decision making entity. I find all of it fascinating.
Thanks for allowing me to publish this back and forth. You had some interesting perspectives as a relatively new resident, and some good questions.)
