(Lyn's note: Please feel free to send us any pictures you'd like included.  If your photos are for sale, let us know and we will put them under that category.  We have a special section for that purpose, and have just added some art as well.  Check out Tom Baker's photos for sale.  He's the photographer who took that gorgeous photo in the Carefree Gardens Photo Contest that was both the judges' first pick and the public favorite.  It's now featured on the Town of Carefree website, and will be the cover of the 2014 Gardens calendar that will be for sale later this summer at Carefree Town Hall.  If anyone would like to buy a print of any of Herbert's photos, all profits will be donated to one of the local non-profit organizations.)  Here's the link to this week's Pictures of the Week.

Very nice.  The Angel was really something special.

Sara

(Lyn's note: The angel that was in front of Carefree Town Hall during the holidays is a gorgeous piece.  Melissa Price won her in a raffle that benefited the Foothills Food Bank.  She was donated to that raffle by Sue Bickerdyke, who owns the interior design shop in the Basha's center.  Melissa used the angel at her Christmas parties for a couple of years, then decided it would be nice if everyone could see her, so donated her to the Town.)

Hi Lyn,

Enjoyed your letter ... Especially the Fido bag story.

Kathleen

Dear Homeowner:

Several homeowners have responded to the previous e-mail requesting further information and what they should be looking for.

The information we received about incidents happening in Sentinel Rock and Carefree Foothills. MCSO stated there have been numerous robberies in the area.  They are looking for a burgundy sedan and a white "box" like truck similar to a commercial vehicle but without a name. The same day the previous e-mail was sent an incident happened around 7:00 pm in Entrada.  A homeowner came home and there was a white Econoline van in the driveway with lights on and the motor running.   When he drove up they rushed to get out and drove away.  He asked his wife if she had someone visiting.  She hadn't.  She told him about the e-mail they had received regarding suspicious activity and 911 was called.  MCSO came to see if they were okay and also checked the side and back yards to see if anything was wrong.  In this case, thankfully, everyone and everything was fine.

The Board is aware and is doing what they can to keep the community informed.  Yes, the community is gated which helps but it is not a deterrent to crime.  As I said, it helps but there is absolutely nothing that can be done to secure any community entirely.  Even though Entrada is gated someone did get in.  Perhaps by tailgating or someone's code; who knows?  It is the responsibility of each and every individual to secure their own property.   Keep the security system armed (verify that it is operational inside and outside with the security company), garage doors closed, the garage door to the house locked, and if you are going to be out of town make arrangements with your neighbors to keep an eye on your home.  Everyone needs to work together.  No matter where you are, be aware of your surroundings.

Viola Lanam, CAAM®

Just a clarification on our book publication.  We publish a book every year, not every two years.

9 volt batteries can start fires. Share this with your family and friends. Someone's life could be saved. This is supposed to be a safety video clip for kids ... but it is appropriate for kids of ALL ages!! 9 volt batteries CAN burn down your home ...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSJH21WmALc

(Lyn's note: I got this email and sent it out to friends.  Several suggested I also put it into Carefree Truth.  The following came to me from Arthur Gimson.

After watching the video clip, I sent it out to my HOA, and received an immediate response from one of my neighbors.  I have probably changed the batteries in my smoke detectors every year for the past 10 years.  I must have about 7 or 8.  I, too, have stuck the old batteries (probably still good after only one year’s use) and have never had any problems…how lucky I have been!

I know that you sent it out to people on your e-mail list, but I think it may be worth including in your next issue of Carefree Truth.

Thank you Arthur! Excellent safety advise!! Once Jeff was on a ladder changing our smoke detector batteries, when we found out how warm they could get, and possibly cause a fire! The ladder held the new batteries, and his pocket was for placing the used batteries. In that short period of time.....up and down the ladder..... his pocket actually got quite warm! Since then, we have battery separator compartments at home, and recycle safely! Good to be reminded!

Dear Party Animals,

We look forward to seeing you at the Foothills Animal Rescue Rock & Roll Rescue at Desert Mountain on January 18, 2014.  We are trying to coordinate photos of our attendee's pets for the event.  Please email me a picture of your critter(s), preferably with you in the photo,  but this is not essential if you are camera shy.   Your dog/cat/iguana does not have to be a rescue to send a picture, we love seeing all animals and their human friends.  Please include your name, the pet(s) name, and if a rescue animal - the date of rescue and a brief story.

Thanks for your support.

Little Shop of Horrors

Friday - Sunday

We've all killed our share of house plants.

But what if the plant returned the favor?

Friday, January 17 to Sunday, January 19

also

Friday, January 24 - Sunday, January 26

Meet Seymour Krelborn: Orphan. Loser. Nebbish. His dead-end job

in a skid-row flower shop is enlivened only by his love for the beautiful Audrey, seemingly destined to remain unrequited. Then one day at the wholesale flower market, after a mysterious solar eclipse, Seymour takes home a very special plant, which he names Audrey II. A plant that grows. A plant that sings. A plant with some unusual . . . appetites.A delightful mash-up of '60s camp horror, outrageous black comedy, and rock, doo-wop, and Motown, Little Shop was an off-Broadway smash before being "discovered" by Broadway and Hollywood. You'll laugh, you'll scream, you'll sing along, . . . and you'll never turn your back on your geraniums again.

(Rated H for Horticultural, due to slithering tendrils, gaping maws, on-stage germination, and mild fertilizer use.)

History Highlights

From the Cave Creek Museum

(Kraig Nelson)

In 1945 two well-educated men met at a Kiwanis luncheon in downtown Phoenix. Kenyon Turner (K.T.) Palmer, who earned a law degree from the University of Arizona, and Thomas D. (Tom) Darlington, a Stanford University graduate, discussed creating a new town someday. Ten years later a company was formed called The Carefree Development Corporation and land acquisition commenced.
