CAREFREE TRUTH

Dear Neighbors:

Last year, I sent out an e-mail about anode rods in water heaters.

Subsequently, I received a variety of positive comments from neighbors who knew as little as I, at least on that subject.

I had a smoke detector that ‘chirped’. That told me that my back-up

battery needed replacement. I replaced it, but it continued to chirp, not all the time, but every now and again. The chirp was not loud enough to wake me, just an annoying little chirp.

After a little research, I learned that smoke detectors have a life span The National Fire Protection Association recommends that smoke detectors should be replaced every 10 years. My house was completed in December 2002. I had a total of 8.

Just sending this out in the event that you may encounter similar

problems.

Lyn,

Before Christmas for the first time we had a good healthy looking coyote jump the wall into the garden. When he saw me he jumped back over. We don't have pets.

Bobcat comes around daily looking for a dove but maintains his distance and never aggressive. Think he is the one that has been around for a few years. I read a newspaper on the patio and he snoozes on the wall and then disappears.

Sadly, small animals and the desert are not compatible.

Thank you all for your suggestions, which ultimately end in people being careful, rather than expecting coyotes to respect a fence or loose dog. I suspect this will be a continuing dialogue, which I hope will not burden Lyn, but which helps us with this substantial worry to many residents.

Sara

(Lyn's note:  No burden at all.  I'm all about the animals, both wild and domestic.)

Hi Lyn,
We are at our house again for the next week or so...getting settled is a big challenge when we are here infrequently and for short periods of time....and with a 2 year old son! Anyway, my sister & 2 year old niece are here with us. Today we were walking around the gardens and of course the kids wanted to play on the slides. I don't know why I didn't notice the sign before but THANK YOU to you and Herbert for the donation to make the playground possible! It's a great place for our little ones to play, they really love it!

Tracy O.
(Lyn's note: The playground set in the Gardens was Ron Clarke's dream.  He and Nancy were the driving force behind it, and a big donor to it.  Carefree Kiwanis and the CBA also donated, and the Town kicked in the rest.  Fortunately, the playground was completed before Ron passed away, so he got to see kids enjoying it.  Ron did a tremendous amount for Carefree, and he is sorely missed by so many.  Attached are some fun pics Herbert took of some kids and their parents using the set recently.)

Dear Family and Friends,

Sharon Pristash is the principal of the school at our Parish. Sharon has formed a Relay for Life Team called Team Susan in memory of Susan Fornino who passed away in November 2012 after a battle with cancer. Susan worked at the Parish school, was a good friend, wife, mother, grandmother, and loved by many. I have joined Team Susan and will be walking as a survivor. Right now we are recruiting team members to walk the event and to help raise team funds. Please read the message below to learn more about Relay for Life. The first website is about the principal, Sharon Pristash. Click on the link below to the Team Susan page and join the team now. Cancer has touched our lives with people we know and love. Help us raise the funds to find a cure. Your participation in the Relay for Life to either walk with us or send a donation to our team will be greatly appreciated. Should you join Team Susan to walk with us, here are some meeting dates to add to your calendar:

Tues. Feb. 12, 7 PM -- Team Info Meeting at Paradise Valley Comm. College Black Mtn (next to the Y on 60th St)

Tues. March 12, 7 PM -- Team Info Meeting at Paradise Valley Comm. College Black Mtn (next to the Y on 60th St)

Sat/Sun, Apr. 20/21 -- Relay for Life at Cactus Shadows High School

I just signed up for an important event and want to share it with you! Picture yourself walking around a track, surrounded by family and friends, encouraging each other to make another lap, as you celebrate those who’ve fought cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against a disease that has taken too much from too many. This is the scene at every American Cancer Society Relay For Life event, including the one I will be participating in. I’d be honored if you’d be a part of our Team. The money raised through Relay For Life events support the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving work, like Hope Lodge facilities, which offer cancer patients a free place to stay, comfort, and support when they have to travel far from home for treatment. Too many people, including possibly someone you or I know, will be diagnosed with cancer this year. A Relay For Life event is our opportunity to inspire hope by raising funds and awareness to help those facing the disease. I hope you will join me!
