Letters from Readers & Events: 10/1/14
(Lyn's note: Please feel free to send us any pictures you'd like included. If your photos are for sale, let us know and we will put them under that category. We have a special section for that purpose, and have just added some art as well. If anyone would like to buy a print of any of Herbert's photos, all profits will be donated to one of the local non-profit organizations.) Here's the link to this week's Pictures of the Week.

(Lyn's note: It seems that some people received the Carefree Truth non profit events last week as a zip file, rather than embedded in the body of the email as I sent them. Ron responded with the correct way to open the zip file, in case anyone has trouble doing so. Thanks, Ron!)
The message and any attached files have been turned into a ZIP attachment. Once downloaded and unzipped, open it with a word processor or text editor for reading.

John, does Rural Metro inspect residential fire suppression systems. I have a neighbor who bought his house recently and wants it checked out. I have been in my house for over 10 years, is there any recommendation for periodic inspections?
Arthur Gimson
We do in fact inspect existing systems. The caveat is, that if the inspector finds an issue, the repairs have to be performed by a licensed sprinkler contractor. In regards to ongoing inspections, my Fire Marshal recommends flowing the test valve once a year to make sure the alarm bell is operating properly and it's good to flush out all the old, stale water from the system. For an inspection and/or further questions, you or your neighbor can
contact my Fire Marshal directly at 602-677-4421.

From John Backlund:
It is with great sadness that I must report the passing of Jean
Backlund, my mother. To quote a great friend, "She was a force of
nature. She's left this life but her energy will carry on in a new
form." Thanks for being her friend and acquaintance.
Jean- "LESS IS MORE"
(Our sympathy on the passing of you mother. She was a lovely lady.
Lyn and Herbert)
A celebration of his life will be held for Tom Webster at the VFW Hall in Cave Creek from 2-6 on Saturday, Oct 4th. Tom passed away on September 22nd. He will be missed by many of us.
Lyn
Hi Lyn.
This past week there have been two very serious accidents on Tom Darlington near the Bloody Basin intersection. One of the accidents required a medical air rescue. I have tried to find out the nature of the accidents without success. Hard to tell if the accident occurred due to oncoming traffic, decreased visibility due to the location of the sun, etc.
I am concerned of the frequency and nature of the accidents. If you have any info or words of caution to our Carefree neighbors, it would be greatly appreciated.
Nancy Keller
(Lyn's note: I contacted the Mayor for more information, and sent Mayor Schwan's and Kevin Stuckey's answers to Nancy.)
You are such a great Community advocate. Thanks so much for your prompt response. It was just strange to see two in the same area. I know this time of year we have serious issues with the southern sun rotation impeding visibility. Who knows, perhaps there is decreased visibility at that particular corner due to landscape?? The medi flight was about 10 days ago on a Saturday and the second was yesterday. Nancy
I've asked Kevin to respond to you and Nancy about the accidents.
Sincerely,
Mayor David Schwan
Lyn, I believe both accidents were single vehicle accidents. One was caused by a high rate of speed and losing control. The second was an elderly person losing control of the vehicle…not sure if it was medically related or not. The sun should not have been an issue.
