A recent review of response times by Rural Metro (Carefree Fire Department), revealed that many homes in Carefree that are poorly marked. The guidelines from the International Fire Code (IFC) suggest that all homes are marked with number 6" in height facing the street. Personally, I am not sure that this works for Carefree since some homes are not visible from the street. While my house does not comply with the IFC, I do have 6" numbers on an address boulder at the entry to my driveway.

While I make no guarantees, I am fairly certain that there is not a Council Member who will mandate that the Town change its code to require house identification, but, I think that your readers may want to check to see whether their homes are well enough marked so that first-responders would have little or no difficulty getting there in the event of an emergency, day or night.

Some of the problem areas include two driveways, other situations have overgrown trees or shrubbery. Since there is no mail delivery in Carefree, we don't even have mailboxes to help out. Every situation will be unique, that's the Carefree lifestyle, but residents need to think about how to best address their own circumstances.

David Schwan will also include this topic of house identification on the

agenda for the Town Hall meeting with the HOAs on Saturday, October 13, 2012 at 8:00 am. (A shameless plug for that meeting!) This meeting is open to the public. There will also be a short presentation from the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office on crime prevention. It is not just the Fire Department that are first responders.
