World-Renowned Artist Comes to Carefree

Enchanted Pumpkin Garden

October 16-31

Halloween spirit invades Carefree in the form of whimsical pumpkin carvings from master carver Ray Villafane. The Enchanted Pumpkin Garden is open to the public from October 16-31, 9 a.m.- 9 p.m.

Woven throughout the Carefree Desert Gardens, there will be over 30 playful characters, artfully imagined and frolicking in a magical village, as well as twelve preserved pumpkins in pickling tanks. The preserved designs will be on display in Saguaros, carved by Villafane, and lit by LED lighting.

Based in Arizona, Ray Villafane is a world-renowned American sculptor who has travelled throughout the globe fashioning exceptional figures and scenes out of pumpkins, sand and snow.

Villafane has been called, "The Michelangelo of pumpkin carving," by Martha Stewart, carving for the President at the White House and on numerous national TV programs. From Good Morning America to the Food Network's Pumpkin Challenges, which he won in 2008, 2009, and 2010. For more information visit carefree.org.

The Grand Opening on Friday, October 16, will take place all day from 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Villafane will host a live pumpkin carving demonstration in the Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion. Photo opportunities will be available with “King” Pumpkin, an over 500-pound carved masterpiece, as well as kids activities, music, and autumnal refreshments. Attendees are invited to take self-guided tours and see Villafane's whimsical village filled with a cast of enchanting characters.

Other special events throughout the two-week long Enchanted Pumpkin Display include special live carving activities, October 17-18, and October 24-25. There will be Picasso Pumpkin activities for kids, and live carving from Villafane and Villafane Studios. Magic Bird Festivals Announces

4th Annual Carefree Fine Art of the Southwest Festival

Artisan Designs of the Southwest, World-Champion Hoop Dancing Performances in Downtown Carefree’s Botanical Desert Gardens

Magic Bird Festivals commences its winter entertainment season with the 4th Annual Carefree Fine Art of the Southwest Festival on Friday, November 27- Sunday, November 29, in the Carefree Desert Gardens, 100 Easy St., Carefree, Arizona.

Renowned for its contemporary, Southwest-inspired art and handcrafted designs, the entire show is woven throughout the tranquil beauty of Carefree’s exotic desert botanical gardens. Escape the post-Thanksgiving shopping milieu for this entirely free, family-friendly event that runs daily, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Browse one-of-a-kind sculptures, exquisite Native American jewelry, and exceptional mixed-media pieces while taking in the vibrant desert flora and fauna artfully landscaped throughout the four-acre gardens.

Along with collections from more than 100 recognized artisans, the Carefree Fine Art of the Southwest Festival also hosts live music and entertainment. Daily performances take center stage at the shaded, open-air Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion. Attendees will appreciate the state-of-the-art acoustics and generous stage views.

For more information, call 480-488-2014 or visit magicbirdfestivals.com.

This year’s featured entertainment is world-champion hoop dancer Moontee Sinquah who will perform with his sons, Scott and Samson. The Sinquahs are renowned for their traditional, Native American hoop dancing, colorful costumes, and modern dance interpretations. Moontee’s contemporary Monster Blues Band will also make an encore appearance.

The show also presents an array of prestigious fine arts and crafts exhibitors including Sage Designs by Michael Sage. Based in Vancouver,  Sage has been creating jewelry for nearly 20 years using the ancient art of natural leaf skeletonizing. The exquisite internal leaf structure is preserved and re-tinted within his artwork.

Nelda Schrupp, a jeweler and sculptor of the Pheasant Rump Nakota First Nation will also be in attendance displaying her ceremonial dance rattles and necklaces. Each of her designs is beautifully embellished with horse hair, natural stones, and other decorative elements.

A National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI) Artist Fellow, Schrupp’s work is widely recognized and showcased in the Smithsonian American Art Museum. This is Schrupp’s third year presenting at the Carefree Fine Art of the Southwest Festival. “The organization is fantastic with great crowds,” said Schrupp, who enjoys the show’s vibrant atmosphere.

Brimming with one-of-a-kind art and crowd-pleasing entertainment, the event also hosts a variety of culinary vendors that serve an array of international cuisines and boutique treats.

“Though our town is small, it is alive with southwest spirit. Our art, entertainment, and culturally informative performances embrace the history and nature that surrounds us. There is nothing else quite like it in Arizona,” said Roberta Toombs-Rechlin, owner of Magic Bird.

Easy Street Luxury Condominiums

Carefree further strengthened its image as one of Arizona’s emerging residential and commercial development areas with the unanimous approval by the Town Council of Easy Street, a $45 million project of luxury condominiums in the downtown Carefree area by developer Ed Lewis.

Mr. Lewis, through his Scottsdale-based Butte Companies, recently developed The Landmark ultra-luxury urban condominiums in Kierland, and has a history for pioneering unique developments that combine high-service luxury with the convenience of a pedestrian friendly location.

The forty-nine new luxury residences along Easy Street will offer a complete lifestyle package along with a variety of spectacular mountain views just steps away from the Carefree Desert Gardens and the Town Center. Residents will be adjacent to the best of Carefree’s numerous amenities.

“We view the Easy Street development to be an outstanding residential option for the residents of Carefree as well as residents from throughout the entire desert foothills area,” said Carefree Mayor Les Peterson. “Our Council, in keeping with the wishes of the town’s residents, has been careful to preserve Carefree’s unique lifestyle and image. The Easy Street development fits in beautifully with the Town and our vision for its future.”

Steve Betts, a development expert contracted by the Town of Carefree, echoed Mayor Peterson’s comments. “The Easy Street development represents a milestone in Carefree’s development,” said Mr. Betts. “Ed Lewis was among the first to identify and capitalize on the attractive Carefree area, joining Toll Brothers and Keystone Homes with residential developments in close proximity to the downtown area. The impact of Mr. Lewis’s development sets the stage for dramatic additional commercial projects such as a complementing boutique hotel, additional restaurants, retails shops and micro-breweries.”

“Easy Street provides an attractive new housing option for those desiring a maintenance free lifestyle close to the many amenities of a downtown village but still in the desert foothills area,” said Ed Lewis. With the approval received last evening from the Town Council, Mr. Lewis stated that reservations for the Easy Street project will commence this fall, with available occupancy planned for the fall of 2017.
