(Lyn's note: Please feel free to send us any pictures you'd like included.  If your photos are for sale, let us know and we will put them under that category.  We have a special section for that purpose, and have just added some art as well.  Check out Tom Baker's photos for sale.  He's the photographer who took that gorgeous photo in the Carefree Gardens Photo Contest that was both the judges' first pick and the public favorite.  It's now featured on the Town of Carefree website, and will be the cover of the 2014 Gardens calendar that will be for sale later this summer at Carefree Town Hall.  If anyone would like to buy a print of any of Herbert's photos, all profits will be donated to one of the local non-profit organizations.)  Here's the link to this week's Pictures of the Week.

There is one thing I'd like to make you aware of so you can warn others.  A couple days ago I parked my car in my driveway and left my doors unlocked.  The next morning someone had rummaged through my glove compartment and center console storage area and took an old GPS.  They left everything else.

I thought I'd report that to you so that you can warn others to remember to lock their doors.  This was totally avoidable if I would have locked my doors.

Thanks,

Carmen Cavolo

(Lyn's note: I got this from someone in my development, and I sent it out to my HOA list.  I got this response from Arthur Gimson, who is one of my neighboring developments contacts.)

Lyn:

Good reminder.  While reading, I could not help but think about the "old

GPS".  I sincerely hope that it was not programmed to reflect a street

address.

There are stories about car thieves targeting cars with GPS's.  After

stealing the car, they activate the GPS to see if it is programmed for a

home address.  If it is, they make a beeline for that address using another car.  The thought behind the process is that:

1.  The person losing the car is obviously not at home!

2.  If they have discovered the loss, maybe someone at the house has been called to assist the distraught driver.

3.  They ring the doorbell hoping that it will not be answered, break in any help themselves.

My GPS is programmed for "Home" as the intersection of Cave Creek Road and

Carefree Highway.

Arthur

(Lyn's note: The people who had the old GPS stolen are new to our development, so it's not an issue for them, but it sure is a valid concern, and Arthur's solution is worth implementing if you have GPS.)

It could not have gone better! Every vet who attended said they got very high value from it. I can't tell you how gratifying it has been to be with these fine men and women who have served this great country with honor.

Mike Wold

(Lyn's note: I had emailed asking Mike how this weekend's Healing of Memories for Veteran's had gone.  Above is his reply.

We attended a reception Thursday night at the Black Mountain United Church held for Father Lapsley, the founder of this and other international programs for those traumatized by war and violence.  Herbert took his camera and did a short YouTube on it for them. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwPN3IbH_v4

Mike is hoping to make this into an annual event here in Carefree, and donations are appreciated, as there is no charge to the vets who attend.  Donations go to the event host, Spirit in the Desert Retreat.

Mountains of the Land Trust Photo Contest deadline tomorrow!

2012 Black Mountain Photo Contest People's Choice Award-winning photo by Mike Burns.

Don't miss the deadline! Desert Foothills Land Trust will accept entries in the Mountains of the Land Trust Photo Contest through

4:00 pm on Friday October 18, 2013.

The photo contest is intended to encourage a deeper appreciation for the unique characteristics of Black Mountain and Daisy Mountain - the landmarks at the heart of our Desert Foothills communities. Photos can be taken any time, but should feature Black Mountain or Daisy Mountain in some way.

In 2009, Desert Foothills Land Trust merged with Black Mountain Conservancy and continued the Conservancy's Black Mountain Photo Contest. Earlier this year, Desert Foothills Land Trust merged with North Country Conservancy, who had also long hosted a photo contest celebrating Daisy Mountain. We are pleased to now host a contest that celebrates BOTH of these iconic mountains in our communities!

2012 Daisy Mountain Photo Contest finalist by Michael Graham.

Entries may be dropped off at the Desert Foothills Land Trust office at 7518 E. Elbow Bend in Carefree, as well as the Town of Carefree, Town of Cave Creek and Anthem Community Center. Please visit the Desert Foothills Land Trust's website at www.dflt.org for more information, complete rules and entry forms.

Beginning on Friday, October 25, you will be able to VOTE on your favorite photograph for the People's Choice Award. Visit our Facebook page to pick your favorite, or see them in person at Anthem Autumnfest, the North Branch Library, Cave Creek Museum or Desert Foothills Library - the display schedule is available on our website.

Join us for Desert Discovery Day on November 16 at Jewel of the Creek!

Discover the wonder and beauty of our Sonoran Desert home! Desert Foothills Land Trust is thrilled to host a day of free outdoor experiences and hands-on education at the Jewel of the Creek Preserve in Cave Creek, Arizona.

Desert Discovery Day on November 16, 2013 will allow children of all ages to explore the preserve, learn about the diversity of life in our desert, and to examine the geology and archaeology underlying this magnificent landscape.

The day will include a "scavenger hunt" of informational stations along the Harry Dalton Trail. Children will receive a stamp at each station, and they'll receive a goody bag for collecting all the stamps. There will be live animals, crafts, and even free refreshments!

The focus for the day is to share the beautiful Sonoran Desert and the Jewel of the Creek with the community in a way that encourages support for conservation efforts, education and participation in hiking and other healthy outdoor activities. Other participants include:

  1. AZ Archaeological Society, Desert Foothills Chapter

  2. Cave Creek Museum

  3. Desert Awareness Committee of Foothills Community Foundation

  4. Phoenix Herpetological Society

  5. Southwest Wildlife Conservation C

  7. Wild At Heart

The Jewel of the Creek is a 26-acre preserve adjacent to Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area. Parking will be available at Spur Cross.  The Jewel supports sensitive and high quality riparian habitat along Cave Creek. This perennial water source is important to both plants and wildlife, and has supported a rich human history, as well.

Desert Discovery Day is sure to be an exciting event for our community, and for our children in particular. Wear your hiking shoes and come prepared for fun, hands-on desert adventures. We can't wait to see you out there!

  1. The event is FREE on November 16, 2013; 10 am - 2 pm

  2. Parking is available at the lot at Spur Cross Ranch Conservation Area, 3.9 miles north of Cave Creek Road on Spur Cross Road.

  3. The activities will be found on a trail that includes one steep and rocky slope down to the creek - and back up! Come prepared for trail hiking, including proper footwear, sunscreen and water. We will have plenty of activities for the whole family!

Supporting tourism in our communities

Earlier this month, we hosted journalists from around the world (Brazil, China, France, Germany, Great Britain, Canada, Mexico and Japan) on a hike at the Jewel of the Creek Preserve. We were thrilled to share this special place with visitors from across the globe, and to help our community attract visitors that support a healthy, thriving economy! Thanks to the Arizona Office of Tourism for including us in the visit!

Volunteer Steve Jones shares Sonoran Desert natural history with travel journalists from around the world at Jewel of the Creek Preserve.

You can now visit the Cave Creek Museum to view Jerry Sieve's beautiful photographs of Land Trust preserves. The exhibition will remain at the Museum through early January, when it will move to the Desert Broom Library.  Please visit our website for more information about the exhibition.

ImagesAZ magazine also had a wonderful piece about Jerry, including the exhibition. You can view that on pages 60-63 of the October 2013 Carefree/Cave Creek issue of the magazine, or on the ImagesAZ website. Enjoy!
