Dear Neighbors,
We are delighted to invite you to the first ever Carefree Christmas Festival "Preview" night on Thursday December 3rd from 6:00pm to 7:30pm.
This is a wonderful opportunity to see the beautifully decorated Carefree Desert Gardens and Sanderson Lincoln Pavilion. We will have performances from our local Elementary and Middle School choirs, soloists, musicians and Nutcracker Ballet excerpts, together with information on the 8th Annual Carefree Christmas Festival and a chance to visit with Santa! Guest appearances from Foothills Animal Rescue, an address from Mayor Peterson and maybe even a sneak peak at Parade entries.
Bring your family down to the Pavilion on Thursday Dec 3rd 6pm and get into the holiday spirit, the lights will be turned on throughout the Gardens for the first time that evening, it will be a truly magical sight.
For more information visit www.carefreechristmasfestival.com
Parade night is Saturday December 12th so if you haven't yet entered your float, call the Chamber of Commerce 480.488.2051 and thank you to everyone that continues to support the festival via your generous donations.
Happy Thanksgiving and see you at the Festival!

Director, Carefree Christmas Festival
Loved Jo’s picture of the bobcat, also the other one on pictures-of-week. We have a couple of bobcats roaming our subdivision, one larger than the other. Not sure if it is a male and a female, or a female with cub. Katya wants to go and play with them, but they stroll off!

Too bad you can’t do a wolf float.. You have some wonderful stuff going on up there!

Thanks for the good press, Lyn.

(Lyn's note: Mike is running Healing of Memories for Veterans at the Retreat in early Dec. See info about it in Carefree Truth Non Profit Events. Mike was also one of the speakers at our Carefree Veteran's Day event. Carefree Truth will be doing an issue on that event.)
Lyn,
Excellent write-up. Sounds like a no-brainer.

Les:
Having just waded through Lyn's report on the Liberty Water (I still call it Black Mountain Sewer Company) reminds me of days in 2009 when I was Secretary/Treasurer of our HOA and we were working with RUCO on BMSC's rate increase; a situation compounded by the Boulders' sewer problem.
There's been a lot of water under the bridge, or should a say a lot of
sewage that has moved down the pipes, and you are to be commended for leading the fight, not only for the Boulders, but for the Town. I could never understand why the resort did not upgrade its golf course irrigation system way back when. I am sure that I could find a way to decrease my home's landscape irrigation use by 15% if I needed to. But, that's now history, great that the resort's current ownership took that step. Over time, they will reap the benefits.
I know that the fight will never be over, we both know that Liberty Water will, sooner or later, file for rate increases as is their prerogative under the ACC system, but, at least, the Boulders sewage plant problems appears to be over...congratulations to you and your committee.

The Mayor and Council should be commended for helping to orchestrate a foreseeable positive solution to this very difficult matter. Good job.

Lyn,
Great report. Thanks.

(Lyn's note: Below is an email Carole, Tess' owner, sent to Jakki Brooks, who was also instrumental in the search, and who has been in contact with Carole since seeing my email. Numerous people were involved in getting her back home, including Holly and Jeff Bergman of the Wild Holly Gallery and Foothills Animal Rescue. To the best of my understanding at this point, Jeff and Holly must have spotted her and called the owners based on the info in the emails and posters. I'm assuming Tess then ran into the desert and disappeared, reappearing later at the hot dog guy's place. But at least Jeff's call let them know to stop looking in downtown Carefree, and move the search to the Spur Cross Road area.)
All total we hung 35 signs bright pink with 4 images. A resident took it upon herself to copy one of mine on her copy machine that was running low on ink and she hung them on her own. We have exhausted ourselves calling and looking until dark last night and daybreak this morning. At 3 this afternoon a man called to say his wife brought in a flyer and he called my number to say he spotted Tess on Cave Creek Rd near the Hideaway. Candy, the show promoter and my husband sped off and shortly she was found at the Wild West Mall with the hot dog guy. She is safe with us. I do not have time to explain the nature of our relationship with this dog. We are a devoted Pack. I am aware of the leash laws but Tess has stayed so close to us for 7 years and there has NEVER been an incident like this before. Promotors and artist friends alike are amazed by this behavior. Something snapped in her yesterday. She is a rescue dog and may have something to do with a past experience. We will never know because she is an animal and can't tell us.
I called every one I could, got on every social media I could. Hope seemed fruitless after a night in the desert with people telling me about coyotes. Bob cats, mountain lions, javelinas. Cactus burrs. Dehydration. The thought of losing her has made us crazy. I have not eaten or slept since she bolted.
I hope you know what you did was appreciated more than words can ever express. As I told my bereaved family it was like a war room in Carefree. We are so grateful that the signage worked. Please continue to work on behalf of these precious creatures.
Thank you and you son once again.
Hawkeyes did good today.
Sincerely,
Carole, Rich and happy but tired Tess
(Jakki's response to Carole)
I just crumpled into a pile of thankful tears! It was the emails that alerted Holly who found her. Our system works! We are a devoted and pet loving community! Sorry if I sounded tough on you, I had a pack of horseback riders ready to take to the trails and I couldn't give them a thumb's up because I thought you'd given up hope.
Thank God! And use this as you go forward, rescues (bless you for adopting and not buying) have issues we will never understand. And human spirit, and heart is still present even though our world looks the other way these days.
Please be sure she gets plenty of water and rest. Consider taking her to Animal Health Services so they can check out her feet, ears and everything in between. Just an exam, and the most thorough you could ever imagine, THEY CARE!
One last thing, Carole, place a kiss on Tess's forehead and tell her getting her home answered SO many prayers and wishes!
There are a LOT of things that Tess could've come in contact with during her desert travels, I really encourage you to have her checked out by a desert vet. Infection wouldn't show yet, and can be prevented!
Before I put my soap box away for good on this subject, a wise man once told me giving an overweight animal treats is killing them with kindness. It'll make her less painful to have a better diet. Low calorie food, small amounts no more than twice a day, and feed her only raw veggies if she wants a treat. I don't mean to nag, just watching out for her health and comfort in the years to come.
Quite the path she carved to get from the Sundial to Spur Cross! Amazing!
Blessings!
And Happy Thanksgiving!
Jakki
PS Holly runs the not for profit Foothills Animal Rescue, which I co-founded all those years ago, small world!
Found! Reunited! Found on Spur Cross by Holly Bergman!
People, we live in an amazing community! Thank you all for your eyes and ears! Happy ending! Hoping the owners will get Tess into Animal Health Services for a head to toe check up!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Another HAPPY ending!
Jakki Brooks
I love happy endings! She ran a long way from the town center!!

So glad to hear that.

Great news! Always amazes me that a lost dog can survive in the desert and yet is found to return home:)
Alison Krasno
(Lyn's note: Alison had a poster of Tess on her storefront window at Bosco's Biscuits. By the way, her homebaked dog biscuits are fabulous. Our furkids adore them. She uses human grade ingredients.)
So happy for her owners.

Great news!!

Thank you Lyn for being the communication leader of this wonderful community!

(Lyn's note: Without the email from Mike, co-owner of the UPS Store in Carefree, I wouldn't have known about it. There were so many people involved in getting this girl home, as always!)
Lyn,
It is people like you that make our communities wonderful! When you send a "lost dog" announcement everyone is on high alert. Thank you for what you do for all of us!
Happy Thanksgiving to you, Herbie, and all your fury babies!!!!

Dear Lyn,
Just settling down after the traumatic weekend.
By now you know Tess is safe and we are overjoyed and grateful. She was so very far from us at the Wild West Mall. The stinker had found food, water and shade. Safety on the steps. I feel she knew she was getting closer to Anthem where we stay when we're here.
I so regret my typo in giving UPS my tel#. Fat fingers and my distressed state. Plus someone picked up the flyers for me or I would have proofread. Darn, that was embarrassing. Could it have been more important?
Emails were coming from people I didn't know and I wasn't clear on how they got my email address and knew I was from Iowa.
Thank you to everyone who took time to help. I wish there was an effective GPS system for dogs. Tess would not let anyone approach her so a micro chip isn't effective although we plan to get one put in ASAP in Iowa.
We took her to a vet today and she checked out perfect.
Again, thank you.
Happy Thanksgiving! Mine started Saturday afternoon.
Regards, Carole
