CAREFREE TRUTH
Letters from Readers & Events: 12/11/13
(Lyn's note: Please feel free to send us any pictures you'd like included. If your photos are for sale, let us know and we will put them under that category. We have a special section for that purpose, and have just added some art as well. Check out Tom Baker's photos for sale. He's the photographer who took that gorgeous photo in the Carefree Gardens Photo Contest that was both the judges' first pick and the public favorite. It's now featured on the Town of Carefree website, and will be the cover of the 2014 Gardens calendar that will be for sale later this summer at Carefree Town Hall. If anyone would like to buy a print of any of Herbert's photos, all profits will be donated to one of the local non-profit organizations.) Here's the link to this week's Pictures of the Week.

Lyn, great discussion of ongoing issues.
I did a fair amount of investigation on this with the RUCO-APS situation and was told that the ACC does not have much enforcement power. They have multiple mandates resulting in hearings, and then, in some cases, minimal power to deal with problems. A rate case is a big deal and a long processing time, so you gave your reader good advice I think, but people need to know it is not a quick fix, nor are the big agencies as responsive as the Carefree Council. But it’s never too soon for residents to begin the petitioning, letters, etc. to build a consensus in the community. At least within the business community. One guy at the ACC is probably not going to get far by himself. Since this is a utility issue, I would suggest your readers becoming familiar with RUCO, our utility watchdog organization, which is a consumer-driven group. Go to www.azruco.gov.
We have big utility changes ahead of us in the next few years. We will provide any news to the Carefree Truth as soon as we spot it.

The Foothills Food Bank & Resource Center seeks sponsors for 27 families so it can brighten the holiday season for children, families and seniors in the northern Arizona foothills community. The food bank is working with more than a dozen local organizations and churches to provide gifts, holiday meals and hope for those in crisis in the community.
Individual donors as well as donor groups such as businesses, HOAs, churches, and schools, are encouraged to participate in this year’s Adopt-a-Family program. Interested donors determine the size of the family they are willing to adopt then a family wish list is provided as a shopping guide. There is no minimum donation and shopping assistance is available for monetary donations to support the program. Checks are payable to the Foothills Food Bank. All gifts and donations are tax deductible according to tax laws.

Mountains of the Land Trust Photo Contest Winners Announced!
2014 Calendars Available NOW from Desert Foothills Land Trust
(North Valley, AZ) – Desert Foothills Land Trust is pleased to announce the results of the Mountains of the Land Trust Photo Contest! Professional photographers Alan Lowy, Kazu Okutomi, Richard Rubenstein, Jerry Sieve and Mike Spinelli reviewed all entries and chose 13 finalists. The finalist's photos celebrated Black Mountain or Daisy Mountain and were on public display for viewing and voting for the People's Choice Award at Anthem Autumnfest, the Cave Creek Museum, Desert Foothills Library, and North Valley Regional Library, as well as the Land Trust's Facebook page.
The People's Choice Award winner is Tammy Manganelli! Tammy's beautiful and colorful photo is featured on the cover of the 2014 Mountains of the Land Trust calendar. Additionally, the professional photographers selected their top picks:
•First Place: Bob Hughes
•Second Place: Jay Chatzkel
•Third Place: Michelle Nicholas
•First Place (under 18 years old): Deanna Bailey (age 16)
The other finalists were: Thomas Baker, Mike Burns, Mark Carroll, Michael Graham, Herbert Hitchon, Americo Longo, Jeremy Manganelli (age 13) and Andreas Schmalz.
All of these photos appear in the 2014 calendar, and can also be viewed on the Land Trust's Facebook page. At a reception to present the awards to photographers, the crowd was especially pleased to learn that not one, but two entrants under 18 years old had photos chosen for the calendar – Deanna Bailey (age 16) and Jeremy Manganelli (age 13). Their photos were even chosen before the professional photographer judges knew their ages!
The photo contest is intended to encourage a deeper appreciation for the remarkable landmarks at the center of the Desert Foothills. The Land Trust is grateful to all the photographers who entered the contest. Their photographs demonstrate the special place that Black Mountain and Daisy Mountain hold in our communities and hearts.
Just in time for the holidays, calendars can be purchased from the Land Trust office! They are $12 each or two for $20. Call 480-488-6131 or e-mail photos@dflt.org to get your copy today. Don’t delay – the calendars often sell out!

Hi Lyn, Jan Misseri here. Just would like to put a little something in the great "Carefree Truth". I am searching for a position as an administrative assistant/customer service provider as well as a pet sitter. Will match prices you are paying now. I've worked in all of these areas for the past sixteen years and can provide references. I live in Carefree so I am readily available to all in the area. Please feel free to contact me either by email - casbin@aol.com or by phone - 480-488-5182.
