(Lyn's note: Please feel free to send us any pictures you'd like included.  If your photos are for sale, let us know and we will put them under that category.  We have a special section for that purpose, and have just added some art as well.  Check out Tom Baker's photos for sale.  He's the photographer who took that gorgeous photo in the Carefree Gardens Photo Contest that was both the judges' first pick and the public favorite.  It's now featured on the Town of Carefree website, and will be the cover of the 2014 Gardens calendar that will be for sale later this summer at Carefree Town Hall.  If anyone would like to buy a print of any of Herbert's photos, all profits will be donated to one of the local non-profit organizations.)  Here's the link to this week's Pictures of the Week.

Thanks for the good words, Lyn.

John Crane

You did an outstanding job even if we didn't get to see John's handsome mug.  :)

Melissa Price

(You will get to see his handsome mug in Part 2 of the Veterans Day report.)

Excellent!!!!

Laurie Palace

Glad I read that. I will plan to attend next year. Yea, for Carefree!!!

This  video is one that I call a keeper..so many men and women have served our Country and once they are out of uniform they are forgotten.

Kathy Riemer

(Lyn's note: Outstanding video.  Thanks for sharing, Kathy!)

Good one!

Arthur Gimson

(Lyn's note: When Arthur was on the Council, he was the organizer for the Veterans Day event.  Now, it's John Crane.  Both have done outstanding jobs.  Thanks for your dedication to our vets and to our Town, guys!)

Hitch,

I must admit I was overcome with the presentations on your recent e-mail. There are some great people in your area and the work they do to remember our veterans is outstanding.

Herb's picture and sound are GREAT.  He is a master in his presentations.

I often think about my friends that did not come home from Korea and Viet Nam,

I went into the Marine Corps at 17 after quitting high school  You had to be 17 with parents signatures.  Korea was just over. I still remember some of my older friends that did not return.

I stayed for 8 1/2 years on active duty and got out in the Cleveland,Ohio area and started in a steel warehouse cleaning bar stock and went on from there.  You know the story.  Much like your Mom & Dad.

I got out just a few years before Nam but some of my friends that were still in the Corps went to Nam and some did not return.  I often think about them.

Yes, we who have been served by the best must always remember them and the programs that you and Herb and all your friends present will continue to show your efforts to make sure we NEVER forget

Thanks to all of you!

Ron Crouse

(Lyn's note: My parents owned a tool steel warehouse for which I worked back in suburban Philadelphia.  Papa Ron is the owner of the mill that was our supplier, a family owned and operated business too.  As you can see, we're still in touch after all these years.  He is a gung ho ex Marine (aren't all Marines gung ho?), and I thought he would enjoy this 2 part edition of Carefree Truth on the Veterans Day event.  As you can see, he did.  Papa Ron was also kind enough to donate to Mike Wold's "Healing of Memories" event this year when I sent him the info on it.  I love Papa Ron.)

Pretty pic!

Hope Ozer

(Lyn's note: Yes, Blaine is adorable.)

What year was this Veteran’s day?  Seems quite late and quite anti-climactic for the 2013 celebration.

F.G.

(Lyn's note: They covered a lot of important topics at the November Council meeting, then held the annual November Town Hall meeting, which lasted for 2 hours and also covered lots of topics.  Third was the Veterans Day event.  I saved the best for last!)

Gee, An American flag stretched tightly over the legs and butt of a leggy woman. How American and patriotic!  Sorry if it offends some, but I cannot imagine where their reverence for what our flag represents is.

Jim Raymond

Hi Lyn:

Judging by the list of Carefree Christmas Festival donors that appeared in Scottsdale Republic this morning, you were a very busy elf leading up to the festival.   Well done.

John Crane

(Lyn's note:  It was my job on the Festival Committee to round up donations from the local merchants.  We have a fantastic team working on the Christmas Festival.  Everyone involved puts in a tremendous amount of time and energy, just like you did for the Veterans Day event, John.)

Lyn, We were unable to attend the Christmas Festival events, but did see various parts of Cory’s visits from Channel 10, which was almost as much fun since we were inside and warm!  Cory always lights up an event… glad we didn’t miss it.  Thank you for all of your hard work.    John & Sara Vanucci

Wishing you and your family the Season's joys and wonders.

Enjoy the holidays.

New Ownership for CITYSunTimes

Paradise Valley, Az. –After  more than 12 years, locally owned CITYSunTimes is under new ownership effective December 5, 2013. Lorrie Pomeroy, president of Indigo Publishing, Inc. has been announced as the new publisher of the monthly community publication serving more than 80,000 readers. Pomeroy takes over for founder and publisher Hope H. Ozer.

“This is an exciting time for CITYSunTimes.  After 12 years of successfully publishing and experiencing the unprecedented growth of CITYSunTimes, I am delighted to announce our transition to new ownership. There is clearly an uptick in the viability and validity of community newspapers as evidenced by Warren Buffett’s recent purchase of 28 newspapers. Indigo came to us with an offer we couldn’t refuse. In accepting their offer, we are confident that Lorrie will maintain its integrity and commitment to excellence while taking CST to the next level,” Ozer said.

Pomeroy is an active member of the Valley community and is committed to continuing CITYSunTimes’ history of excellence.  As founder, Ozer will continue to serve as Publisher Emeritus and will work with Lorrie on a consulting basis to assure her success.

“I am delighted that Lorrie has asked that I continue to author my ‘CITYViews’ column for CST,” Ozer adds.

Additionally, CST's longtime Executive Editor Katherine Koenig will be stepping down to pursue other interests, while current Managing Editor Kathryn M. Miller will move up to the lead editorial position as Editor-In-Chief.

Pomeroy looks forward to continuing Ozer’s vision. “Embracing the community as the new publisher of CST is an honor!  I look forward to continuing the rich tradition of community journalism,” says Pomeroy.

Pomeroy has a degree in Business Administration from the University of South Dakota and has held executive positions with Dillard’s Department Stores.  She is a resident of Paradise Valley and the mother of four.

CST offers personalized news each month to Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, North Phoenix, Carefree, Cave Creek, Black Canyon City, New River, Anthem and Fountain Hills, and is delivered to area homes and businesses. Over the past dozen years, the publication has experienced substantial growth in both advertising and readership.

  Foothills Animal Rescue

   Cage-free Shelter and Boutique

No-kill Shelter and Boutique

Christmas, 2013

Dear Friends of FAR,

This year we have hugged, walked, petted and loved 569 homeless cats and dogs. That is how many animals that have been rescued, sheltered and cared for at Foothills Animal Rescue by our dedicated staff and volunteers. With your help we have found life-long, loving homes for almost 500 of our orphaned pets at either weekly off-site adoption events, seasonal community events or at our shelter facility.

Our wonderful volunteers have contributed to the adoptions of our longer term cats like: Mikey recently adopted by Kimberly and David Henlin, Venus adopted by Pat and Tony Rhymer, Addison adopted by Mary Jordan and Montana adopted by Ronda Creemens. We fondly remember Foxy Roxy, Grandpa Munster, Courtney, Payson, Marley, Seraphina, Bikini, Cole and Deliah 2, who all found homes this year. We are truly blessed that with our volunteers help we have adopted over 170 cats and kittens.

We have been successful in re-homing more than 325 dogs with the help of our volunteer adoption team and staff who work so hard to make sure that they are placed in the right home. Our intake team have the toughest job of choosing the best dogs for our facility, we thank them every day as we walk, play or love on the new dogs that we get weekly. A few of our favorites are: Sage, Monty, Lucky and Patches, Pickles, Katrina, Duchess and Honey along with many others.

This year we have been supported by grants from IBM, EBay Foundation, Barney's Friends, Ryan Newman Foundation, Bernice Barbour, and private donors that believe in our mission of saving lives through rescue, care and adoption of homeless cats and dogs. With their support we have been able to provide critical medical care for eight of our dogs including: Melanie with diaphragmatic hernia, Cabella with bladder stones, Peppermint who had heartworm and many others that are now healthy and happy in loving homes. Ten of our adult cats received dental care from our new preventative dental care program helping to ensure the overall health and well-being of our cats. Other areas that have benefited from our grants have been spay/neuter and preventative vaccination programs, new website soon to be revealed in the new year and general medical care for our animals.

The Resale Boutique continues to grow with the Furniture Barn and is becoming a great service to the community. The boutique volunteers and staff are an amazing group of people that not only take care of their customers, they make sure that everyone knows that 100% of the sales goes to the care of our cats and dogs.

We are greatly supported by private donors and our fundraising efforts. Thank you to all the people who attended Pasta for Paws, Rock and Roll Rescue, Whiskers & Wine and Pins for Paws. These events mean so much to us not only for fundraising but to connect with our neighbors and community. We see ourselves as a neighborhood Shelter and Adoption Center for North Scottsdale, Carefree and Cave Creek.

So on behalf of the animals in our care, Thank you. Our hope this holiday season is for every cat and dog we rescue to have a life-long, happy and loving home.

Happy Holidays and looking forward to an amazing New Year,

Marlene Miles

Abby on a hike

Dear Fellow Volunteers,

It's that holiday time of year where we look forward to sharing love and laughter with family. Here at Foothills Animal Rescue (FAR) our cats and dogs are hoping they too will become part of a family. You may recall during your animal care training we talked about being an advocate for the shelter, being the voice of our animals and sharing their story through out your social media. Those of you that walk the dogs know we have a few that have been here too long through no fault of their own; except that they are afraid. They need a kind person that is willing to be patient and understanding. Our feline leukemia cats are equally as cuddly and beautiful as our cats that roam in our open community. Please help us find them their forever homes, tell their story, share their photographs by linking to our website, foothillsanimal.org. Be the beacon of light that shines on their path to a future forever home. There is no better feeling than knowing you have saved the life of your four legged friend.

May you be blessed abundantly this holiday and throughout the New Year,

Gail Buch

Shelter Manager
