Downtown Carefree “Village” Development Approach

One of the projects that the entire Carefree Town Council continues to work on with its funds designated for economic development is to stimulate the vibrancy and usage of the downtown Village Center. Economic development success for this area would stimulate increased visitation of the Village Center by Carefree residents and visitors, as well as generate additional sales tax revenues for Carefree from the sale of taxable products through the Village Center merchant’s stores.

In order to resolve how best to proceed in this area in a thorough and professional manner, this past summer the Town Council commissioned a major study, called the “Baker Group Study.” This Study utilizes an outside team of nationally recognized real estate and property development experts to chart a course to build increased visitation of the downtown Village Center in an affordable manner. The recommendations from the Baker Group consultants will be presented to all Carefree residents next spring.

After discussions with members of the Baker Group Study project development team, and based upon our previous work in economic development, we anticipate that one of the major Baker Group Study recommendations will be to develop a major cultural draw to the downtown area to attract residents and visitors to visit that area on a frequent basis. In anticipation of this recommendation, two parallel projects, either or both of which could function as a strong stimulus to the Village Center, are in development at the current time and are targeted to be integrated into the Baker Group Study final report. These are:

- The Foothills Community Foundation/Desert Foothills Theater who would manage and operate on a full time basis a Cultural Center including community and professional theater, movies, lectures, classes on a variety of topics, etc., and

- ASU, which through their Herberger School of Design, could offer a wide platform of museum activities, performances, lectures, classes in selected topics and exhibits

If either, and preferably both, of the Desert Foothills Theater based Cultural Center and/or the ASU projects continue to show promise of feasibility, they will be incorporated into and evaluated as components of the overall Baker Group Study implementation plan. Subject to affordability, we would like to see a collaboration of both of these organizations open and successfully operate appealing programs and satellite facilities in downtown Carefree.

The entire Carefree Town Council and Staff will continue to develop the Theater/Cultural Center and ASU opportunities, and then review them and possibly any other available options and their costs with the consultants from the Baker Group in the spring when the Study is completed. We will keep residents and merchants informed of progress and milestones being achieved as these projects move forward.

Vice Mayor of Carefree

Lyn,

Thanks for the publishing the piece on the Healing of Memories for Veterans in the Carefree Truth. Also thank you for the great description of the Veterans Day activities. I am looking forward to playing a role in next year's festivities. I went up to MN to lead the annual veterans prayer service and dinner at the church where I have been the military service support leader for 8 years. I have transferred all my MN veteran support activities up there to capable people and now will be focused solely on the vets in AZ. Now I will no longer have to go back to MN during Veterans Day. I will be in Carefree in November from now on.

Thanks for your support of our vets.

Healing of Memories Workshop for Veterans Returns to Arizona

The Healing of Memories for Veterans Workshop is again coming to Arizona on December 5-7, 2014 at the Spirit in the Desert Retreat Center in Carefree. This workshop has been conducted three times for men and women Arizona vets of all eras with good reviews from the 40+ vets who have attended. It is designed to help vets heal from the emotional and spiritual affects of their military experiences. The workshop begins with dinner at 6pm on Friday, December 5 and ends at 2pm on Sunday, December 7.The workshop is free of charge for veterans, including all meals and two nights lodging. Transportation will be provided to veterans in the Phoenix area who need it.

The Healing of Memories Workshop was created by Father Michael Lapsley, an Anglican missionary priest, who in 1990 suffered the loss of his hands and the sight in one eye from a letter bomb that was sent to him in Zimbabwe by a supporter of the pro-apartheid government in South Africa. After a long recovery from the bombing, Father Lapsley decided to dedicate his life to helping victims of emotional, psychological and spiritual wounds inflicted by war, human rights abuses and other traumatic circumstances. He founded the Institute for Healing Memories in South Africa in 1998. Their mission is to facilitate the healing process of individuals, communities and nations.

Veterans of any era may register free for the workshop by calling Cyndy at Spirit in the Desert Retreat Center, 480-488-5218, email: cyndy@spiritinthedesert.org, or on the web: www.spiritinthedesert.org. Registrations are limited to the first 24 veterans who register so if you are interested register early.

If you are interested in donating a full or partial tax deductible scholarship for a veteran, please contact Cyndy or visit the website.

The retreat is being coordinated by Mike Wold, a Navy Vietnam veteran, who lives in Arizona. For more information about this workshop, its leaders, goals, concepts and any other questions contact him at michael_w_wold@msn.com or 651-687-9767 (cell).

What a great Veterans Day tribute and celebration. Carefree is so fortunate to have a true hero and legend like Blaine Keith. Councilman Crane and Mayor Schwan did a great job. They had great material to work with in Col. Keith.

Semper Fi, Blaine. KGDS!!

Hi Lyn:

Herb and you did a great job recording, editing and narrating the Carefree Veterans Day celebration.

We are very fortunate to have such enthusiastic contributors to the program year after year.  The veterans organizations in attendance always identify new volunteers, collect donations and develop leads to veterans who they can assist.  All of this is a testimonial to the residents of Carefree and nearby communities.

By the way, in the interest of accuracy, I did not retire from the US Navy, but proudly served seven good years in the submarine force including a year at nuclear power school, three years on a fast attack submarine and three years on a deep submersible.  I left the Navy in 1985.  I got to the end of my last assigned and resigned.  As an officer, that’s how it’s done.

Best regards,

John Crane

Thank you Lyn and Dr. Herbie for all your hard work in the filming, editing, and release of the videos of the Veterans Day event.

This year, due to a family scheduling conflict, Patti and I were out of Town, resulting in my first miss of the five events.  It is great to see how it has matured.  Congratulations to John Crane for putting together what I believe has been the best event to date.  I thought that Lt. Muldoon did a good job with the Honor Flight.

Hitch,

Thanks for the e-mail on the Carefree program.  Very nice.

If you get a chance, you might want to tell Col. B. Keith that I had an opportunity to fly in the F3D Skynight  while stationed at the USMC Cherry Point, NC air station.

The F3D was a Fairchild/Fouglas plane that was developed during the Korean War because our planes could not compete with the MIG 15.  The F3D was not as fast as Mig15s but the radar was the most powerful anywhere and could detect MIG 15s at a distance and shoot them down before they knew we were even around.

They could not compete during the daytime because they were not as fast as Mig15s but they flew at night and led the way, as guards scouting ahead, and shooting down MIG15s as our bombers made night time raids.

The pilot called the plane the "DRUT" because spelled backwards it gave their opinion of the plane.

Thought the Col. might like the story since he was a pilot  Give him my regards,

PaPa Ron

(Lyn's note: Papa Ron Crouse owns the mill we used as our primary supplier when I was in the tool steel business in Philadelphia.  We are still in constant contact via email, even after 26 years.  I always send him our Carefree Truth issue on the Carefree Veterans Day event.  Papa Ron and Blaine are my 2 favorite Marines.  Papa Ron also donates to Mike Wold's Healing of Memories each year.  He's a gem.)

Very Cool. Thanks for sending.

"This video is about BOSCO'S BISCUITS. Treat your dog to the best. Baked with love!"

(Lyn's note: Before Herbert did that video for Alison, I had no idea her biscuits were made with human grade ingredients!  I've been buying biscuits from her ever since.  And she's a nice lady.)
