CAREFREE TRUTH

Letters from Readers & Events: 12/4/13

Letters_from_Readers_%26_Events.html

Lyn,

Many of your readers may remember Kathy King.  She and her husband and son owned and operated the Saguaro Grill in Carefree in the not too distant past.  She was very active with the Chamber and was such an asset to Carefree.  She recently had surgery for abdomen/ovarian cancer and is about to go through chemo.  I ask that your readers keep her in their prayers, and if they would like to send her a card, her address is:

Kathy King

32009 N. 52nd Way

Cave Creek, AZ 85331

Melissa Price

(Lyn's note: Please feel free to send us any pictures you'd like included.  If your photos are for sale, let us know and we will put them under that category.  We have a special section for that purpose, and have just added some art as well.  Check out Tom Baker's photos for sale.  He's the photographer who took that gorgeous photo in the Carefree Gardens Photo Contest that was both the judges' first pick and the public favorite.  It's now featured on the Town of Carefree website, and will be the cover of the 2014 Gardens calendar that will be for sale later this summer at Carefree Town Hall.  If anyone would like to buy a print of any of Herbert's photos, all profits will be donated to one of the local non-profit organizations.)  Here's the link to this week's Pictures of the Week.

Foothills Food Bank & Resource Center is helping hungry children in the Cave Creek Unified School District by providing special snack packs.

The Snack Pack program came about when retired Scottsdale resident Carmine Furioso, who is assisting the food bank, joined up with Gina Durban, director of education and community services for the district. The Snack Pack program provides 102 children with meals every weekend. The meals are planned using a nutritionist’s advice. Each meal includes a breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as two snacks for Saturday and Sunday. The meals are assembled by volunteers and delivered to the schools on Fridays in donated plastic bags. Children who receive the Snack Packs participate in the Federal School Free and Reduced Lunch Program. Approximately 11 percent of families in the northern foothills school district qualify for the Snack Pack Program.

According to Furioso, the Cave Creek food bank program costs a little more than $5 per child each week. The program, which is funded by a federal grant and donations fund, is offered in seven elementary and middle schools. Soon, it also will be offered to high school students.

The display will begin on November 26, 2013.

Children's Creative Corner Update

Unfortunately, several of our Disney and other popular dvds have disappeared.  We would greatly appreciate their safe return.  Due to budget constraints, we are unable to replace all of our missing children's movies.

Please remember that residents of Maricopa County (including children!) can get a library card with proof of address.  A regular cardholder can check out three (3) dvds at a time.

Knowing and Growing Program

"Stay and Play"

Thursdays at 10:30 AM

In cooperation with the Scottsdale Public Library, Desert Foothills Library is proud to continue offering programs as part of the Knowing and Growing program, designed to be both fun and informative for you and your child.

Our "Stay and Play" program continues on Thursdays through the end of December. This program, for ages 0-5, features community experts who will discuss important topics such as  early literacy, child development, speech and hearing, nutrition, social/emotional development, and play and movement in a casual playgroup setting. Let your child explore the many fun toys and games available while you learn about these important developmental milestones.

In January, our schedule will fill up with even more programs from the Knowing and Growing series, including "Fun with Math and Science," "Toddler Brain Time," and "Ready to Read." Keep an eye out for January's newsletter and these exciting new programs.

For more information about the Knowing and Growing series, visit

Lego Build It!

Returns in January

Last Thursday of the Month

4:00-5:00 pm

(Ages 4+)

Our LEGO club has been on a bit of a hiatus during the holiday season, but we'll be back in full swing in January! The library has acquired some new, larger blocks for the younger kids as well, to make the program more accessible to all ages. Come spend an evening building elaborate creations or simple machines with other LEGO fans!

Of course, LEGOs are fun, but did you know that they can support Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math education as well?  Not to mention teamwork!

Note: Legos will be provided by the Library. Please do not bring your own Legos as they could get lost in the Library's Lego supply.

If you have new or gently used Legos that you would like to donate to the Library, please contact Susan Alberts at (480) 488-2286 or salberts@dfla.org.
