Nothing is more difficult than discovering that someone you know and respect has been diagnosed with an illness that has the potential to become more severe than imaged. Especially when this news comes as a shock to you, it might be all the more devastating to hear. That person needs all your love and support. Thus, I am deeply saddened to hear of Mayor Schwan's illness and subsequent resignation as Mayor. This news most definitely comes sadly as a shock to our community and members of the town council.
Words cannot express how grateful I am to have served with Mayor Schwan, as I have deeply respected his committed service to Carefree for over a decade.
Mayor, please keep in mind that your council members and friends are here to provide Binka and yourself with anything that you need. You will be in our thoughts and prayers. Please keep your spirits high Mayor.
Sincerely,
Michael E. Farrar
Councilman, Town of Carefree, Arizona
Thanks Lyn. I have been in touch with David. Very sad.
Ed Morgan
God Bless you and your family Mayor Schwan and THANK YOU for all your service. You will be in our prayers.
Anita Bakke
Oh my. This is so sad. David is a wonderful person. Hopefully, he can find a treatment that at least slows down the progress.

Thanks Lyn. I'm delighted to have been selected by the judges. What a roller coaster of a news day. I'm still digesting all the David Schwan news.
Best regards,
Betsy Lynn
(Lyn's note: Betsy was one of the winners in the Carefree Desert Gardens Photo Contest.)
We are devastated hearing this news. Is there anything as a community we can do for this wonderful man and his wife? We are willing to pitch in and do anything we can to help. Thanks Lyn for all you do to keep the community informed.
Thanks,
Gale & Nancy Totten
Wow. Did you see that coming? I am so sorry for his very unfortunate news.
Trudy Miller

FYI... Arizona Republic late on Wednesday. The AP also posted the story.
Carefree Mayor David Schwan resigns after ALS diagnosis
I have a friend whose wife died of the disease and he told me today they have isolated a protein or a gene that causes the disease and they are close to cure!
My heart is broken for them. I may oppose his view on revitalization of this town, but I respect and care or him as man and friend.
Holly Bergman
That's terrible news. My thoughts go out to the mayor and his family.

Lyn:
Such bad news!!! I will send a separate letter, but in the meantime, you will probably get many letters expressing their best wishes, so please enter my name and Renee's if you wind up sending anything to Mayor Schwan. I got to know him a bit through my work on the washes.
Jeff and Renee Kerner
HEARTBREAKING!!! Please let us know if we can participate in anything honoring his years of FABULOUS service. We have been blessed by his efforts. Our hearts and prayers go out to Binka and David.

Lyn,
This is such distressing news. David and Binka have given so much to the community over the years. Please add my name to the chorus of well-wishers.
Reg Monachino
Councilman, Town of Cave Creek
Tragic....Thanks for getting out the word. I wish him well on his new challenge.
Eileen Crowley
How terribly sad. A friend of mine, back in Illinois, husband has it and I keep hoping that the “bucket fund raiser” would help them find a cure.
Louise Short
(Lyn's note: See Holly's letter above. Wouldn't that be wonderful if the did find a cure to help David and your friend's husband? I also have another friend whose husband has ALS. While there's life, there's hope.)
I read it on coins and I am in a state of shock. That's probably why he looked like something was wrong yesterday when we saw him.
We went to Mass at St Mary's Basilica today to celebrate our Stephen's life, who would have been 53 today. I will pray for David and his wife regularly from today on.
Be Well,
Joseph Corpora
David and Binka are dear friends of ours, and we are sickened by this terrible news. But they are loved by many and have a huge support system in this area. We will be there for them. They are not alone.
Lyn and Herbert
Hi Lyn – attached is an analysis I just ran. I calculated the number of snowbirds v. full-time residents. It came out to anywhere from 65% snowbirds to 81% snowbirds. I think this would be very useful information to those in the Council who keep talking about the “new residents”. Feel free to distribute it. Thanks.

I'm convinced more than ever that scattered planned Cultural Capsules (CultCaps) placed strategically thru the business community is the way to go . I wonder if there isn't a way to ask ASU if they would consider a CultCaps approach instead of a Cultural Ctr basically in the wrong place. They could still have exhibits.
Just thinking.
