CAREFREE TRUTH

Letters from Readers: 2/9/13

Carefree citizens are invited and encouraged to attend an all new Town Council candidate debate forum taking place this coming Monday, February 11, at the Carefree Resort & Conference Center. The new format is all citizen driven and replaces prior debate forums which were controlled by outside organizations and entities. This is your opportunity to get a first hand insight into how Carefree is being managed and the future direction of the Town. Unlike neighboring communities, Carefree has a strong Mayor & Town Council form of government as opposed to hiring outside managers to run the town, and the candidates we select are crucial to maintaining the current and future success of our community. We have a great slate of candidates this year, and this is your opportunity to personally meet them and ask any questions in a personal and relaxed atmosphere.

The formal debate will take place promptly at 6:30 P.M. in the Opera House at the resort and end at 7:30 P.M. A cash bar will be set up 30 minutes prior to the debate and will provide a casual atmosphere in which to personally meet and question the candidates. Following the debate, complimentary hors d'oeuvres will be served by the resort with an additional 30 minutes to meet and follow up with the candidates.

This is going to be a fun evening, and an opportunity to not only meet the candidates but to meet a lot of other Carefree citizens who really care about our community. This is your opportunity to get involved in the management and direction of your community and we encourage you to do so.

The event is being sponsored by the Carefree Resort and Carefree Truth, a local citizen information publication. The City Sun Times is the Media Sponsor. The Resort is located at 37220 Mule Train Road, just north of the Mule Train Road intersection on Cave Creek Road. The Opera House is the building just north of the main resort with plenty of parking just a few steps away. The cash bar in the Opera House is not equipped to process credit cards, so bring some cash if you wish to purchase drinks. The hors d'oeuvres and soft drinks are complimentary.

Please come early & we look forward to seeing you there.

Dear Lyn,

When friends ask why I am running for election to the Carefree Town Council, the answer is simple.

My wife and I have lived in Carefree for 16 years, the town has been wonderful for us and I’m fortunate enough to have the kind of experience that can be helpful to its future.

That’s probably not too different than what others who want to give back to their community would say. So I think it’s important for me to call out some distinguishing factors in my background that explain the depth of my feeling.

When I first came to Arizona as a 14-year-old, more than 50 years ago, Carefree was more of a dream than a reality. It was a long way from being an incorporated town that even had a Town Council. I remember it as the place where I frequently hiked in the beautiful and unspoiled desert.

As the area grew, I went to Arizona State University, where I earned BA and MA degrees. Then it was off to the world of marketing and business planning with Procter & Gamble, Pillsbury and two leading marketing consulting firms in Connecticut. And in that business career I honed the marketing and program development skills that can be of real value to our community.

Fulfilling our long-standing goal of returning to Arizona, Mary and I settled in Carefree and have seen the town grow and mature. The current Town Council has been doing a fine job of dealing with the needs of its constituencies, which are surprisingly disparate for a community this size. It has to balance the interests of the Carefree residents who just want to maintain the peace and quiet they came here to enjoy – and also of the tourists who flock here to enjoy our many fairs and festivals. They have to consider the merchants who fill the basic needs of Carefree residents and the businesses that cater to seasonal tourists. It’s in achieving that balance and developing effective programs that I can put my marketing and program development background to valuable use as a member of the Town Council.

It’s not like I have nothing to do in my spare time. I am dedicated to community service and currently am a commissioner on the Carefree Planning and Zoning Commission, and I’m a director of the Desert Foothills Library and a trustee of its Endowment Fund. I’ve helped develop enhancements to the Carefree Town Center and am a past president of my homeowners association. But I feel its important now to help Carefree face its future as a member of the Town Council.

If I’m elected, Carefree residents can be sure I’ll focus on three things:

-- I’ll be dedicated to preserving the quiet, safe and peaceful character of our community.

-- I’ll work hard to support Carefree property values while protecting the natural beauty of our environment, and

-- I’ll apply my experience to help Carefree business succeed and to attract new business to the town.

This is addressed in greater detail in my web-site www.peterson4carefree.com
