Wonderful. Thanks to everyone. KGDS!!

(Lyn's note: Ex-Mayor Morgan is referring to the Gardens Photo Contest issue.)
Lyn,
I watched the awards ceremony on your "you tube" posting ( great idea!). Tom Baker's photo is spectacular!!!
Thanks again.
Mike Burns
(Lyn' note: Mike was one of our winners both this year and last. It is Mike's beautiful photo on the cover of the 2013 Gardens calendar.)
Can I buy a copy of the winning photo? It is wonderful.
Loraine E. Simons
(Lyn's note: Tom does sell his photos. 11 x 14 - $50, 8 1/2 x 11 - $40.
These are unmatted and unframed. The photos entered into the Gardens contest are still owned by the photographers, which is standard practice if you want nice photos entered. The town has the right to use them for marketing, part of which is the calendar, but doesn't have the right to sell the photos themselves. So, to get a photo, you have to go to the photographer. Tom's email is tomin8or@me.com)
I liked Photos #6, #10, and #11. The bird feeding one was okay, but just a lucky shot - not really a thoughtful composition. The others mostly did not use the light in a favorable manner and/or had too much blue sky or other distracting elements. But a good job overall.
Fred G.
(Lyn's note: Many of the winning photographer submitted 3 really nice photos, but could only win once. I'm glad I don't have to judge them and choose!)
(Lyn's note: Below are comments on the Carefree election.)
My congrat's as well. Good line up and great leadership.KGDS!!
Ed Morgan
Thanks for the update Lyn. I think Carefree is once again in good hands.

Join us at the opening
of an exhibition by
photographer Jerry Sieve!
Opening reception
Friday, March 15
6:30-8:00 pm
Foothills Community
Foundation - Holland
Community Center
34250 N. 60th Street
Scottsdale, AZ
Over the last 18 months, photographer Jerry Sieve has been using traditional photography techniques to photograph Desert Foothills Land Trust preserves in order to highlight these unique natural lands. "The opportunity to utilize Jerry's photographic skill to highlight the Land Trust's conservation work is an unprecedented opportunity to reach a wide audience with a message of land conservation," says Land Trust executive director Sonia Perillo.
Jerry scouted opportunities at various preserves in order to determine the best time of day to make an image. After an area was selected, many visits were made to achieve his desired effect. He often used long exposures or selective focus to project a particular idea into an image. All the exhibition photos are selenium-toned, which increases the contrast in the shadows, and also increases the archival properties of the prints. Jerry made all the prints in a traditional dark room, and hand colored or applied metallic materials to highlight features.
Jerry estimates that 60% of his
time preparing the exhibition has been spent in the darkroom making the negatives and prints, 30% of the time hand coloring, leafing, matting and framing the prints, and about 10% in the field making the images. Jerry adds that "Desert Foothills Land Trust areas project aspects of wilderness which I feel comes through in these images. We are very fortunate to have such an organization in our area that is dedicated to protecting these ideals."
Jerry Sieve is a well-known photographer in Arizona, having been published in Arizona Highways, National Wildlife Federation Magazine, Sierra Club Magazine, and National Geographic. He has published five stunning books of photographs, and has exhibited widely at galleries and shows across the United States. He is a popular instructor at the high school and college level, and has led photography classes throughout the U.S. He has also been a volunteer judge of the Desert Foothills Land Trust Black Mountain Photo Contest, and has contributed photos to support the Land Trust's conservation work for many years.
"We are fortunate to have artists like Jerry who can help us share our story of land conservation, and to celebrate the community's love of land," says Perillo. "We are also fortunate to have business partners like BMO Private Bank, who have generously sponsored this exhibition for all of us to enjoy."

Local Businesses Team Up
To Give Necessary Flashlights to Schools
CAREFREE/CAVE CREEK, Ariz., (March 11, 2013)--Financial advisor, Noah S. Kendrick, of Edward Jones Investments in Carefree, is hard at work on a daily basis creating financial security for his clients.
Now, Kendrick has collaborated with a local business to create an added sense of security for students in the Cave Creek Unified School District, (CCUSD), by providing 274 much-needed emergency flashlights, plus batteries, for every classroom in the district.
The need became apparent in September, during Kendrick’s 4th annual School Supply Drive, in which he worked closely with the district to find out what was needed for the 2012/13 school years. New on the wish list were flashlights, one for each classroom, to be used in the case of an emergency.
That’s when Kendrick approached Dave Karsten, owner of Karsten’s Ace Hardware in Carefree, Cave Creek and Goodyear. Karsten, who is also known for his support of the schools, immediately stepped in, and the two teamed up to purchase and provide brand new LED flashlights to each classroom, from kindergarten to the 12th grade.
According to Gina Durbin, CCUSD director of student services, the donation will affect approximately 5,800 students this year.
Durbin, and Debbi Burdick, superintendent of the Cave Creek school district, accepted the flashlights for distribution.
“In the unfortunate situation where school had to lockdown for a crisis situation the flashlights may be used if power was down or if the event went into the evening. As much as we hope that we will never have to use any of our emergency supplies, we certainly want to think ahead and be prepared in the event that a situation would occur,” Durbin said.
Kendrick, an Arizona native, is known for his philanthropic work for the community. In addition to the school drive, he also sponsors awards each month for CCUSD teachers and staff.
When asked why he was involved in assisting students, teachers and staff, Kendrick responded, “the famous comedienne, Lily Tomlin, used to say, ‘I always wondered why somebody doesn't do something about that. Then I realized I was somebody.’”
Kendrick is currently on the board of directors for the Foothills Community Foundation and leads the charge for their Partners in Education program. He is a former president of the Carefree-Cave Creek Chamber of Commerce and was recognized for his financial expertise in USA Today.
Hi Lyn,
Can you please provide the Caring Corps with another mention of their Taste of the Foothills/Cash & Caring Raffle in your newsletter? They do so much for our community and this event is an important fundraiser for them. It all happens next Thursday, so a reminder would be greatly appreciated. On behalf of all of their volunteers who work hard to make this event great, thank you. :-)

DESERT FOOTHILLS THEATER continues season
with Award-Winning Arthur Miller drama.
As DFT is committed to providing a well-rounded theatrical season to our patrons we are thrilled to be continuing our drama series with this American classic, ALL MY SONS directed to Ann Tully.
In All My Sons, an average American family must confront extraordinary dishonesty and its tragic consequences. Joe Keller is a self-made man who built a successful business during World War II; however, defective airplane parts that shipped from Joe’s shop caused American planes to crash.
Who knows the truth? Who is accountable? Who among us would lie to protect a family – and at what cost?
Arthur Miller’s searing drama is strikingly relevant today and urges deep introspection about the power of individual responsibility. Like a family tree with infinite branches, each of us is connected to the other – and to all humanity. All My Sons is the story of how a family tree became broken – and how it may grow again when rooted in truth.
"A modern classic . . . and one that those who see it will never forget"
—Daily Telegraph

CLASSICAL VIOLIN LESSONS FOR CHILDREN
New Classes for Beginners
Start April 6
At Christ Anglican Church in Carefree
Christ Anglican Church in Carefree announces a new, ten-week, first-level violin course for children wishing to learn more about music. The classes are part of an expanding music program for children and families at the church that began last year.
The classes will take place each Saturday from 11 a.m. - noon, April 6 – June 8, at the Dorothy McGinnis Hall, located on the church campus, 35500 N. Cave Creek Road, just north of the corner of Carefree Highway and Cave Creek Road, in Carefree.
Classes are $15 each. Several scholarships are available. Instrument rentals are not included, but are available through Valley of the Sun Violin, in Tempe.
Laya Field, of Cave Creek, who began playing the violin at the age of eight, teaches the course. Field is a classically trained musician, opera singer and teacher. Field began teaching children violin at the church last summer.
Class size is limited. Pre-registration is required. For enrollment information, call 480-993-6147.
According to Field, the new course for young beginners will be based on concepts and teaching theory drawn from Kato Havas, and the Suzuki Method.
“Music comes from the heart as much as from the instrument. We teach children to find the freedom to play the violin and to sing. Freedom brings contentment. We encourage the young musicians to get out of the way of themselves, let the music be heard, and to fly with their voices and violins,” Field said.
The classes are part of an expanding family music program at the church that includes an annual Composer’s Concert, the Family Choir, church recitals and music theory classes, where children learn to read music. The church is lead by Father Steven Dart who has worked closely with Field to expand musical offerings for young people.
