Facebook

March 18, 2014

Before I get into the subject, I first want to welcome many new additions to our email communications. If you are already familiar with the Museum’s emails, you can skip ahead. The Museum periodically sends out emails that cover upcoming events, news and virtual exhibits (aka Artifact of the Month).  Our goal is to connect you with the Museum in a more personal way. For example, in addition to updates we also invite feedback through comments, an annual survey, photo submissions and have even asked for blog content! Our objectives are to share the Museum’s mission with you, offer opportunities for personal enrichment and to have some fun. And if you are so inclined, one of the best things about supporting the Cave Creek Museum is that you can actually make a difference. For example, I started out working on a project to scan artifacts into our digital library. Over time I saw an opportunity to help out with the website and have since shifted my focus to that. Plus, I see many more areas where I can help out. The point is, that however you choose to support the Museum, it has an actual, tangible impact. So I hope that you choose to continue to receive our communications.

Now on to today’s subject which is the Home Tour. First, on behalf of the entire Museum staff and volunteers I want to thank everyone who attended the Home Tour. (We had 600 visitors!) Second, I want to share a bit about the experience from my perspective.

My wife and I served as docents at the Boulder House. My wife was stationed at the front entry and I was positioned at the foot of the stairs that lead to the master suite.  As we rode the shuttle bus to the Boulder House, I was surprised to discover that I drive past it on a regular basis. It sits just to the east of the Summit Shopping Center on Scottsdale Rd. and Ashler Hills. The house is built within an outcropping of boulders and is so well incorporated into them, that it goes unnoticed unless you are looking for it.

Since I knew that the house incorporated boulders in the interior, I expected to find a house that was interesting but impractical. However, I was surprised to find that the interior was very inviting. It is bright and each room appealing. The outside patio has spectacular views. The owners, Bill and Susie Empie, lived in the Boulder House for 25 years! However, it does take sure footing to get around. The floors have uneven rock surfaces and the stairs have no hand rails. Challenging but manageable.

That all said, the Boulder House leaves an indelible impression on you. I spoke to many people and here's what a few had to say. John from Green Valley, who also lives in a house designed by Santa Fe architect Charles Johnson, said that the Boulder House is “really unique to look at” and was impressed by how the architect intertwined the “organic”, natural features into the architecture. Sarah from Cave Creek was struck by the relationship that people have had with this site for thousands of years. Over the course of time, people used this location as a birthing site (there are many petroglyphs that indicate this usage) and for astronomical purposes. There are three spiral petroglyphs (2 outside and one inside) that are aligned with light beams that appear on the solstices and equinoxes. Also, I was fortunate to speak with Susie Johnson, wife of the late architect. It was a very emotional experience for her to visit this house so soon after his passing. Susie told me that Charles considered this house to be his creative masterpiece and was very proud of it.

Despite being busy, I was able to take a few photos. If you want to see them, please click here. You can also leave a comment there to share your experience. And if you took some photos while at the Boulder House, feel free to send one or two to me and I'll add them to the link. (Let me know if you are OK with me giving you the photo credit.) The email address to use is:  admin@cavecreekmuseum.com.

All in all I think that the Home Tour was a great way to spend a beautiful day! I realize that attending a Home Tour is physically challenging and therefore not everyone can participate. And that in part is why I wanted to offer up this brief summary of my experience, just to convey a little about what it was like. Also, I want to again express my thanks to all of the visitors for supporting the Museum and for making the Home Tour a huge success!
