Desert Foothills Theater presents

“Don’t Dress for Dinner” March 28 – April 13

Farce promises to deliver non-stop laughs

(SCOTTSDALE) – Desert Foothills Theater (DFT), a division of the Foothills Community Foundation, presents “Don’t Dress for Dinner” running Fri., March 28 through Sun., April 13 in the Black Box Theater of Cactus Shadows Fine Arts Center, 33606 N. 60th Street, in North Scottsdale.

Written by Marc Camoletti and adapted by Robin Hawdon, the farce promises to deliver non-stop laughs as audience members experience a night of mayhem relating to a sizzling affair. The plot revolves around the main character, Bernard, who is having an affair with Suzanne. Bernard hires chef Suzette to cook them a romantic dinner while his wife Jacqueline visits her mother for the weekend. He invites his old chum Robert to dinner as an alibi. It’s the perfect plan. What could go wrong?

Jere Van Patten jumped at the chance to direct DFT’s production of the show. “I love comedy, and this type of comedy comes at break-neck speed,” Van Patten said. “The thing I enjoy most about directing the show is the script itself.  What a challenge and a hoot to get my hands on this brilliant script by Marc Camoletti!”

The cast of six have their work cut out for them when it comes to timing. “It’s a play about sexual conundrums…so the comedy, the relationships and the timing are all critical,” he said. “This type of comedy follows the rule of three a lot, so getting the timing down for those jokes to land is not only essential, but difficult to nail perfectly -- but when it does, it's gold!”

Van Patten credits the cast for working together so well. “They’re truly genius together and it's so refreshing to see them really dive in to the script and explore all the fun.  It sometimes feel like I'm a playground monitor as opposed to a director because these actors play so well together, have great instincts and go with their guts,” he said.

While infidelity is typically a serious matter, Van Patten hopes audience members come to relax, laugh and enjoy the comedy. “This show is about foibles of the heart and, ‘what fools these mortals be,’” he said.

The cast includes Glenn Parker, Mark Hackmann, Diane Senffner, Debra Ostreicher, Roger Prenger and Melissa Powers. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. on Sunday. A special 2 p.m. performance featuring a Q&A after the show will take place on Sun., April 6. Tickets range from $15-$32 for adults and $11-$16 for youth and students. Group sale discounts are available for groups of 10 or more. Visit www.dftheater.org or call (480) 488-1981.

Rick Burress "Master the Light" All-Day Digital Photography Workshop brought to you by CCUEF

Just $189 - Saturday, April 12th
from 10am-7pm

Location: CCUSD Governing Board Room

33016 N 60th St, Scottsdale, AZ 85266

Rare Opportunity to Train with the BEST.

Your investment in equipment is not nearly as valuable as your investment in YOURSELF.

About the Workshop

You just have to learn to juggle “Aperture, Shutter Speeds, and ISO”—I'll show you how!

You’ll master metering, “painting with Light,” how to capture motion, the secret to perfect exposure everytime, how to know FOR SURE when you need a tripod, the tricks of focusing on moving objects, super close-ups (Macros and Micros) and much more! Learn how to judge and shoot perfect exposures in available light. Get out of “Automatic Mode” and capture images the way you want them. This course will have you shooting like a professional (or better!) in less than a day. Learn how shooting in MANUAL mode is actually the easiest of all—really! Great for a beginner or an advanced shooter—You'll get your money’s worth! This is a one-time, one-day event.

We’ll begin with composition, translate all that camera jargon into English, then get to work.

Learn to shoot what you want, when you want with a few cool tricks in your pocket.

Hyperfocal distance, what the eye is drawn to and how to use that knowledge to your advantage, “Diopters,” filters, lenses explained, your particular questions answered—without making you feel like an idiot.

You'll graduate to shooting in all types of available light, to capture those moments when you can't use the built-in or an external flash—or when flash power can't reach your subject.

(Isn't it funny how all those stadium scenes of crowds of people taking pictures, with flashes going off wildly are doing nothing but draining their camera batteries. I shake my head every time.)

And, you’ll learn the “Magic Trick” for shooting with a zoom to avoid blurry shots without a tripod.

Come spend the day with fellow photographers (Moms and Dads- YOU ARE PHOTOGRAPHERS! Retired enthusiasts, YOUare PHOTOGRAPHERS!) - Rick is donating 25% of his standard course fee back to CCUEF!

You can also choose to sponsor a Cactus Shadows photography student or CCUSD teacher to attend this course!

Date: Saturday, April 12th from 10AM to 7PM

Bring your Camera!

$189 • CLICK TO REGISTER (or sponsor someone) for this workshop

"I guarantee you will come out of Rick's class a MUCH BETTER shooter, whether your camera of choice is an iPhone or a Digital SLR with fancy lenses! You can't come within 25 feet of Rick Burress without learning something EXTREMELY VALUABLE… for life!"

SAVVY SOCIAL SECURITY PLANNING FOR WOMEN

AT THE ENGLISH ROSE TEA ROOM in CAREFREE

Tuesday, April 29

An educational workshop and tea, titled "Savvy Social Security Planning for Women," is slated for 10 – 11:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 29, at the English Rose Tea Room in Carefree.

Hosted by Bryan Wisda, of Summit Wealth Management, the limited seating event is free and open to the public. Attendees will learn how to maximize their benefits by better understanding little-known rules about Social Security.

Included in the workshop is a 50-minute presentation, followed by a question and answer session. Breakfast tea, and scones with cream and jam, will be served.

Wisda encourages women to get informed and involved with their Social Security options. “On average a woman outlives her spouse by 15 years. Learning how to structure social security benefit options before a spouse passes, can greatly affect the survivor in later years.”

According to Wisda, “This workshop is for women, or men who have women in their lives including wives, sisters or mothers. We’ll review essential information all women need to know if they are concerned about financial security in retirement.

“Social Security is one of the few income sources that keeps up with inflation and lasts for life. But most women fail to maximize their benefits because they don't understand the rules that can help them get more out of the system,” he added.

The English Rose Tea Room is located at 201 Easy Street, in Carefree. Seating is limited and reservations are required. Individuals may reserve space by calling Summit Wealth Management at 480-596-9222.

Savvy Social Security Planning for Women will cover:

Why women who are married should make the decision about when their husbands should apply for Social Security.

How the decisions you make in your 60s can determine the amount of income you'll have in your 80s.

How to take advantage of spousal benefits, survivor benefits, divorced-spouse benefits, and even divorced-spouse survivor benefits.

How to coordinate your own retirement benefit with benefits you might receive as a spouse or divorced spouse.

Why you should consider your husband's life expectancy when deciding when to claim your own retirement benefit.

What to do if your husband or ex-husband dies.

What to do if your marital status changes.
