CAREFREE TRUTH

Letters from Readers: 4/1/13

Letters_from_readers.html

Hi Lyn.  This is Terry Bankert and I'm the Adoption Chair for the Humane Society of the White Mountains in Lakeside AZ (Marcia adopted Lady from us).  I just want to tell you how much it meant to each and every one of us to know that your entire community reached out to Marcia and Lady to help them in this awful situation.  We were all so frustrated being 3 hours away and not being able to assist either one of them!  Marcia is a special lady who adopted a special dog and we know that they will now be able to share a lifetime of love with one another.

Again, thank you!

Terry Bankert

What an outstanding display of humans rooting for an animal. WOW. Builds on one's faith in fellow man.

Marcia Dowell

It could only happen in Carefree. Lady is a lucky dog. Marcia is a deserving pet lover. Carefree is blessed with good people like Lyn Hitchon. KGDS!!

Ed Morgan

I have to say, Lyn, I have just met you but can tell you are a kind soul. You clearly helped tremendously in the effort to save Lady. The community is blessed you are a part of it.

Tracey Anderson

(Lyn's note: Thanks, Tracey.  But there were a ton of like minded people involved.  We are an animal loving community, in general, and also one which values helping others.  You choose wisely when picking a home location!  The Desert Foothills area is a great place on so many levels.)

Hi Lyn

Loved the story ... one we in Rescue are unfortunately very familiar with.

I too often camouflage the live traps with branches, blankest, etc. so they don't look so much like a trap, and place it against a wall or in a corner, not out in the open where it is kind of obvious. I can't tell you how many times a truck or someone passes by and scares the pup JUST when you think you have them. It's Murphy's Law!

Also, maybe you can mention to Marcia that she might consider a harness for walking her. Either that or a soft choke collar, but I much prefer the harnesses for the little ones because they choke themselves if they panic and try to bolt. This kind of "past feral" dog is more sensitive and they revert back to feral instantly when scared and on the loose, so the key is avoid the escape if you can. With the big guys, I double leash high-escape risks ... one on the collar, the other on a harness. And the collar is always snug while we are out walking so they can't pull it over their head. If the doggie is a puller, she can order a No-pull Harness from our website! and a small donation goes to LTWR. . . and they work well. It's called a WALK YOUR DOG WITH LOVE harness.

Thanks for sharing!  You guys did GREAT! Another success story! Yahooooo!!!!

Pamela Jo

(Lyn's note: We adopted our Effy from the rescue in Lake Tahoe where Pamela Jo is the executive director.  I knew she'd enjoy this story.)

Wow ... what a story! The Great Spirit was watching over this little dog ... for sure! It's a wonder the coyotes didn't invite her over for ... supper! I never walk my dogs with their collar .. the collar is just to hold tags; I use harnesses. The exact thing that happened to this dog is what I worry about .. pulling out of their collars! Then without a microchip ... the dog has no I.D. and not a whole lot of folks know about chips and how to find them. I am so glad this story had a happy ending ... so many don't.  With all the usual sadness in

the rescue world .. it is nice to see a happy ending to a saga.

John Braden

(Lyn's note: John is also involved in animal rescue.  He found Effy

and Raven, who came from a woman who was losing her home in Tempe, for us in January of 2012.)

Yes Lyn, since last Thursday, every day, Dickens has received even more love, I can’t even imagine how devastating it must be for the owner and the pet.  Your leadership again proved to be totally amazing!

Judie Preston

(Lyn's note: Judie was another neighbor who was out with her little dog, looking for Lady.)

I think you all in Carefree can be proud of what you have accomplished, with you and Herbie being a huge part of it!  It just takes an individual(s) to step up with the facts and the truth and yell "THIS WAY".....luckily enough smart ones follow.  I

am constantly impressed with what you have accomplished.  A

lot of credit goes to your previous and present town staff as

well. Keeping your eye on the prize and not getting distracted by minor annoyances is what you two have done the best! :-)

Shea Stanfield.
