Letters from Readers: 4/12/13
(Lyn's note: Here's the link to our Pictures of the Week. http://carefreetruth.com/Carefree_Truth/Photos_4-8-13.html. Herbert took some lovely ones in the Carefree Desert Gardens last weekend. As you can see, things are in bloom, so get out there with your cameras and take pics to enter in the Carefree Desert Gardens Photo Contest next January!)
This little lady has touched all our hearts. We have a
potential adopter, however, he can't afford a $3400.00
surgery. He has donated 100.00 toward her surgery.
Melanie is a very special dog. She has been in isolation
at our clinic due to the severity of the chemo therapy
for several months and she remains happy and loving.

A Profile in Courage – Melanie’s Story
Melanie is a two year old Catahoula mix that has had an
extremely difficult life from the start. She had puppies
at a young age and wound up at a Maricopa County
shelter. An emaciated stray, she was at risk of being
euthanized. We saved Melanie and brought her into
our shelter in the hopes of finding her a new family.
A detailed examination determined that she had
contracted a venereal disease that caused tumors which
needed to be treated with chemo therapy. The prognosis
was good assuming we could eradicate the tumors with
weekly treatments which lasted nearly two months. This
sweet little girl is very strong, and she pulled through the
treatments successfully. She even had a potential adopter
waiting in the wings but she then spiked a fever and had
labored breathing which required x-rays of her lungs.
The x-rays showed a hole in her chest cavity and was
diagnosed as a Diaphragmatic Hernia. This condition
requires a detailed surgical procedure – the only solution
that would giver her the chance to live the healthy and
happy life she deserves. We have negotiated a lower fee a
surgical specialist. The high end of the surgery could be
$3400.00. Of all the animals that have passed through our
shelter in recent years, we have never encountered one
who has overcome such adversity and touched the hearts
of our staff, board and volunteers. Your support will
give Melanie a new lease on life.
Her life is in our hands, so please make your donation
today at www.foothillsanimal.org
or call 480-488-9890.
Thank you for your support.
(Lyn's note: Wow, I forgot to send out Letters from
Readers this morning. When I just looked at my email,
this was here from Holly, so it would seem there was a
reason I forgot to send Letters out earlier!)
Hi Lyn,
I can't believe that people are so stupid, that they would hunt around homes. They don't even give the poor animal a chance.
Thanks for the info.

(Lyn's note: They could also mistakenly hit people or pets!)
We will watch this carefully for Cave Creek. This issue clearly affects us all. I will pass this on to our candidates for the Cave Creek Runoff election. Thank you for keeping us advised.

Hey, I just got a very nice thank you from David Court on my Truth comments. Thanks for printing my letter kiddo. I hope the Mayor and council read your site too :)

Lyn: as a citizen who uses the Library and a prior Councilman, I 100 % agree with Greg Gardner, and his approach to spending our few dollars in ways that directly benefit a majority of our folks.
When I approached the Mayor, on this subject, over a year ago, He said." we have limited funds. If we do for one...where do we draw the line??" He was/is right. I hope our present Council will find a happy balance, with in the tight constrains of the very poor economy. It seems that our 'duty' to provide more than Fire and Police service requires that we consider all of the 'social' issues not now covered by our annual budgets.
Your blog, on this matter, adds good value. Thanks.

(Lyn's note: As someone who was always on the committee of which Greg spoke, I certainly agree with you. While I understood the need to suspend the donations with the global economy in distress, and the need to address major capital maintenance and repairs such as the streets projects this year and next, as well as marketing and improving the Town to boost sales tax revenue, I very much hope that the contributions to the local non profit organizations can once again be resumed as the economy improves. Having great faith in America, I believe that will happen, and that Carefree will once again be able to invest in "human capital", as it historically has done. We too donate to and use the library. We also donate to a number of the other local non profits and I have done volunteer work for some. We do as much of our shopping locally as is possible. We just got back from a delicious dinner at the Carefree Resort, and I wore a gorgeous skirt to dinner that I just bought at Mumbo Jumbo. We have an treasure trove of wonderful shops and restaurants in Carefree.)
Excellent reporting, my dear.
