(Lyn's note: Please feel free to send us any pictures you'd like included. If your photos are for sale, let us know and we will put them under that category. We have a special section for that purpose. If anyone would like to buy a print of any of Herbert's photos, all profits will be donated to one of the local non-profit organizations.) As you know, David and I are facing one of life’s greatest challenges. His recent ALS diagnosis has completely changed our lives. Like many, we really knew nothing about this deadly disease except there is no cure.
Our local ALS office has been absolutely wonderful, and we are now able to better face the many demands that come with ALS. To help raise money to support our local office and find a cure, please join David and me at Scottsdale’s annual ALS walk on Saturday, October 24. Mark your calendars and become a teammate of David’s Carefree “Sole” Mates! After you read the following letter, please click here to get started! http://webaz.alsa.org/goto/davidssolemates
We hope to see you there!
Binka Schwan
David Schwan, was recently diagnosed with ALS
(aka Lou Gehrig’s disease). Please join our team, David’s Carefree “Sole” Mates, on Saturday, October 24, for either a one or
three-mile walk in downtown Scottsdale. Take in some mild
exercise, wonderful camaraderie and inspiration while
raising funds to help provide care services for families in our
community faced with this challenge. For more information, go
to:

Once you access the site, you may join our team by clicking on
“Join Team”. If you prefer not to walk but want to make a
donation, click “Donate Now” next to any team member’s
name. Perhaps you’ll do both! Making a donation on our
team’s website ensures it being allocated to David’s Carefree
“Sole” Mates.

Wildfire Prevention
The Rural/Metro Fire Department recommends taking proactive steps to protect your home from wildfire by creating a 30-foot area of "defensible space"- an area free of dried grass or other highly flammable dry vegetation around your home. (Living plants need not be removed; only those that are dry or dead.) Make sure there are no limbs of trees near your chimneys or hanging over your house that could carry fire onto your roof. The 30' buffer will help to protect your home, possessions and loved ones in the event of a fire.
If you elect to do this work yourself, you should also be aware that this is prime time for rattlesnake activity. Be aware of your surroundings if you are out in the yard. Look before you reach or step into vegetation where a rattler may be resting. If bitten, call 911, wash the area around the wound and lie down while waiting for the paramedics. DO NOT try any of the "home remedies" you may have heard. Leave your care, which will begin en route to the hospital, to the professionals.
Have a safe and happy summer!
Lyn and Herbert Hitchon
