CAREFREE TRUTH

Letters from Readers: 4/5/13

Letters_from_readers.html
To all interested residents,
As you may know, in February the Town of Carefree petitioned the Arizona Game and Fish Department to restrict the hunting of game within the Town.
Recently, the staff at the Game and Fish Department completed their administrative review of this petition and submitted a public hearing schedule.
The hearing is scheduled to take place:
What:                   Arizona Game and Fish Commission Public Hearing
When:                  8AM on Saturday, April 13th
Where:                Arizona Game and Fish headquarters (located on Carefree Highway to the west of I-17)
The Game and Fish staff are recommending that future hunts for deer and mountain lion adopt a new rule for Carefree.  If adopted by the Game and Fish Commission such rule would restrict archery hunting for deer and mountain lion within ¼ mile radius from any Carefree residence.   It is important to note, according to Game and Fish staff, the rules for future Javelina hunts are set at a separate hearing but similar provisions would be considered by the Commission at that subsequent public hearing.  In essence, Game and Fish staff are confident that such new rules would effectively prohibit archery hunting south of the Rowe wash within the Town and address the resident’s concerns.
At this hearing, Mayor Schwan will speak to this additional restriction to ensure our resident’s rights for a sense of security and privacy are protected.  Please plan on attending this meeting so we can bring this issue to a successful conclusion.  The Town looks forward to receiving your support in this critical effort.
Best regards,
Gary Neiss, Town Administrator
David Schwan, Mayor

Mayors of Carefree, Cave Creek and Scottsdale officially proclaim April’s For The Arts Month

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
CONTACT: Kristi Jacobs, 480-575-6624           info@sonoranartsleague.org

April’s For The Arts — the mayors of Carefree, Cave Creek and Scottsdale all say so. So does the Sonoran Arts League, which sponsors the celebration. For nearly four decades, members of the Sonoran Arts League (formerly the Cave Creek Craft Council) continue to believe that artistic awareness is essential to life and community.

Mayors David Schwan, mayor of Carefree; Vincent Francia, mayor of Cave Creek; and W.J. "Jim" Lane, mayor of Scottsdale added their support by officially declaring the fourth month of the year "April's For The Arts." "We very much appreciate the support of the arts by Mayors Lane, Francia and Schwan," says League President Karen Smith-Lovejoy. "So do the many artists and art enthusiasts of all ages whom this affects.” April’s For The Arts recognizes the Sonoran Arts League for its long-time commitment to advancing art, artists and art education, with a special focus on mentoring youth.  The proclamation will be presented to the membership at the Sonoran Art League's April 8 General Meeting.

In harmony with April’s For The Arts, the League awards thousands of scholarship dollars to motivate local graduating seniors to stay involved in the arts.  To foster artistic growth, since 2003, the Sonoran Arts League has recognized the artistic abilities of young artists and awarded $26,500 in scholarships to graduating seniors from local high schools pursuing studies in the arts.  And as an ongoing effort to provide encouragement to local schoolchildren, the league again will award some 50 students with incentive bags filled with art supplies at the Celebration of the Arts on April 11 at 5 p.m. at the Cactus Shadows Fine Arts Center located at 33606 N. 60th St., Scottsdale.

Following the course of action for April’s For The Arts, the league provides art-related field trips to area museums. This spring, 45 students were bused to the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Arts.  Comments ranged from “I learned how to read art to help determine what message the art piece expressed.” to “It definitely got the creative ideas flowing for my own work.”  And the league also coordinates the YouthArt Exhibition, which features selected artwork by local students in Studio #1 of the annual Hidden In The Hills Studio Tour to be held this year November 22, 23 & 24 and November 29, 30 and December 1.

"This is all part of what the League and its members give back to the community," says Smith-Lovejoy. "It's our way of painting the world with beauty."

Lyn,
Thanks for sharing David Court's message with those of us who could not attend the meeting.    For someone who has visited many libraries and been in this life a long, long time, I believe the Desert Foothills Library is second to none.    Success of this Library comes about from many sources, its board of Directors, terrific Staff,  donors and wonderful volunteers!    But, David, as the CEO, gets most credit to the success as he truly leads with an awareness of the union between balancing human values along with economic ones.   The library has become the heart and soul of our two towns!  It serves as a model to other small towns, libraries, and other non-profits around the state for what can be accomplished by perseverance, vision, and community support.   It's that support that is now needed from the Mayor and Council.   I hope they will vote to allocate money to DFL and that vote will do such a service for our communities.
