Healing of Memories Workshop for Arizona First Responders

A world renowned Anglican priest, Father Michael Lapsley, is returning to the Spirit in the Desert Retreat Center in Carefree to conduct a residential Healing of Memories Workshop for First Responders on May 18-20, 2016. The workshop has been conducted for over 100 Arizona veterans during the last three years and is now being made available to first responders (police, sheriff, fire and EMS personnel) who, like veterans, often suffer from the memories of their experiences on the front lines. The workshop is offered at a discounted fee of $195 (shared room) or $245 (single room). Scholarships are available for anyone for whom the cost is a barrier. The workshop fee includes all meals and two nights lodging. It begins with dinner at 6pm on Wednesday, May 18 and ends at 2pm on Friday, May 20.

The Healing of Memories Workshop was created by Father Michael Lapsley, an Anglican missionary priest, who in 1990 suffered the loss of his hands and the sight in one eye from a letter bomb that was sent to him in Zimbabwe by a supporter of the pro-apartheid government in South Africa. After a long recovery from the bombing, Father Lapsley decided to dedicate his life to helping victims of emotional, psychological and spiritual wounds inflicted by war, human rights abuses and other traumatic circumstances.

First responders may find out more information about the workshop by contacting Mike Wold at

michael_w_wold@msn.com  or calling (651) 687-9767. They may register on line for the workshop at www.spiritinthedesert.org or by calling Cyndy at (480) 488-5218. Space is limited to the first 20 first responders who register.

Thank you for your email Lyn.

First and foremost, if we did not have to provide this service we would not as we have limited resources to expand town services.

In this case, historically, we have had citizens and their guests complain about the desert overgrowth along the public streets throughout the community.   These individuals have raised liability issues related to cars tending to drive towards the center of the streets to avoid scratching their vehicles thus increasing the potential for head on collisions,  overgrowth contributing to blind spots in roadways, pedestrians/bicyclists concern for the safety of themselves and their pets when walking/riding along the streets, inability to park along the shoulder of the streets resulting in cars parking in the streets and concerns over cars parking on top of the overgrowth and potential for starting wildfires.  Whether you agree or not with these statements it is the Town’s reality and a potential liability in the litigious world we live in today.

As a result, the Town recently invested in a new mower which specializes in cutting of brush along the sides of streets.  In years past, the Town had an antiquated, smaller piece of equipment which left tire marks on the streets and was inefficient.  The new equipment efficiently mows and provides for a higher level of safety.  Indeed, due to the more efficient capabilities of this equipment the pruning is occurring at more rapid pace and those areas which were not managed as quickly have larger and more brush which has resulted in some debris left behind.   The Town is trying to collect as much of this pruned material as possible but there may be smaller material left behind.  The town is committed to pick up as much of this material as possible.  If there is concern with any remnant materials please contact Travis Johnson our Public Works Director (email: travis@carefree.org).  Travis will be glad to work with the residents to address their concern.

I do appreciate the concerns regarding this issue and would like to thank everyone for communicating with us so we can better address their concerns.

Best regards,

Gary Neiss, Town Administrator

I would like to second David Court’s remarks about Sonia Perillo’ s management of the Land Trust.  I have worked with her for several years, when we met at a committee meeting for the creation of changes in the Arizona Statutes to create a conservation provision for State Land a long time ago.  Unfortunately, that has never passed, but not for lack of effort.  I was president of the Daisy Mountain Land Trust then, and it was the beginning of  a long relationship of the two land trusts.  We wish her a fulfilling continuation of her effort, and look forward to her next projects.   /  Sara & John Vannucci, Cave Creek

Lyn:

FYI…I am sure you know that fluorescent tubes and CFLs contain mercury and should not be thrown in the trash to prevent the mercury leaching from landfills into the water supply.  In the past I would take my used one to Ace Hardware in the Carefree Marketplace (Bashas’ Center), but learned yesterday that they no longer take them.

I drove down to the Maricopa County dump site, about half a mile west of Fry’s on Carefree Highway where I take my old paint when it goes bad.  They don’t take them either, but the person on duty told me that Lowe’s does…He was right.  Got rid of two tubes.

I just took my fluorescent tubes to the customer service desk, just to the left after entering and they could not have been nicer.  Nothing other than a "thank you".

Our HOA held the annual community party last Saturday night, graciously hosted at the home of one of our residents.  The party was catered by Alberto Ristorante, located in the Mariachi Plaza in Carefree.  The party and Alberto's food were a great success.  Herbert did a short video of the buffet table, which was beautifully arranged by our hostess, Renee.  If you are planning a party, we would highly recommend using Alberto for catering.

Thank you for your support of the Carefree community.  The Gardens are beautiful!

Hi Lyn:

We can do without the signs; we can do without a lot of things. However we would have no Town without Volunteers, and some, like Yourself and Herb, who do it without expecting anything in return, must be recognized by the town.

Of course there are some who volunteer for strictly political reasons. They too are needed to have a successful community, but usually can be replaced by another politician.

Thank you Lyn and Herb for all you do,

Joe Corpora

OMG. Hand out the meds…….

She gives me the willies.

Well, one thing I do agree with Mrs. "Out" is the mistletoe growing everywhere, on private properties and commercial properties.   A tree across from Dr. Doyle's is full of mistletoe.  I think homeowners ought to be warned then fined for letting mistletoe take over their trees and then left to die.  My blood boils when I see beautiful trees infesting with mistletoe and nothing being done about it.  The 2nd oldest house in Carefree is a good example!

Is this an April Fools joke?

(Lyn's note: No.)

"Remy Out" is wearing an Orange jumpsuit. Has the County checked to see if there's any "escapees"?  Cheez!

Lyn,   Is this an April Fools Joke?????
