Hi Lyn,
I wanted to share this correspondence with Carefree Truth.
Thanks for all you do for the community,
Phyllis
Dear Mayor Schwan,
Thanks to you and the town council members for the great job you are doing in making Carefree a wonderful place to live.
We moved here 15 years ago this month, and the town has become better every year since then.
I am writing to request that the town of Carefree provide funding support to these organizations, important pillars of our community's cultural foundation.
Their programs and activities are vital to Carefree residents of all ages, and attract visitors to our area who come for culture and then spend at Carefree businesses:
Cave Creek Museum
Desert Awareness Committee
Desert Foothills Library
Desert Foothills Theater
Is there a formal process that these groups must go through to request funds?
Thank you,
Phyllis Strupp
Thank you for your email concerning funding for cultural organizations.
The email will be distributed to all members of the Carefree Town Council.
The Town is recovering from the recent economic slowdown. We have a number of deferred needs in Carefree that must be addressed in our own budget. On a personal note I would prefer to address the Town’s requirements, such as major road repairs, pedestrian lighting and parking, before we reinstate support for these and other very worthy organizations.
Thanks for writing,
Mayor David Schwan
(Lyn's note: For many years, Carefree generously gave approximately 3% of the total budget in grants to many local non-profits that applied. I was on the committee that heard the requests and made recommendations to the Council. Unfortunately, with the global economic downturn, this tradition had to be discontinued 3 years ago. I look forward to the day when it can be reinstated.)
Longing…lust…romance…
Did I get your attention?
The steamy drama, Picnic (yes, the same story of the movie fame with William Holden and Kim Novak) is being produced by Desert Foothills Theater at the Cactus Shadows Fine Arts Center. It opens on April 12 and runs through the 22nd. It is Labor Day, 1952 in small-town Kansas. Into this perfect world of friendly neighborhoods and white picket fences comes a young man whose animal vitality seriously upsets the entire group and uncovers a world of longing and lust hidden beneath the perfect facade. The show is directed by Diedre Kaye and features a fabulous cast. Come on out and enjoy this Pulitzer Prize-winning play.
Make a wonderful night of it with dinner at one of Carefree or Cave Creek’s fabulous restaurants like Carefree Station, Venues Café, Tonto Bar and Grille or for the more casual dinner, Big Earl’s Greasy Eats, Harold’s Corral or the Cave Creek Tap Haus. Have lunch before our matinee performances at the English Rose Tea Room. Jo is a longtime supporter and is underwriting our Brunches with Belle before our Beauty & the Beast matinees in May. All of these restaurants support Desert Foothills Theatre through either program advertising or event sponsorship.
Tickets are $22-$30 for adults; $15-$20 for youth and are available online at http://www.desertfoothillstheater.com OR by calling 480-488-1981. Online sales available 24 hours a day! Box Office phone hours are Mon., Wed., Thurs. from 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. and at the theater one hour before curtain on every performance night.
