This event will clarify the power and purpose all the programs we offer. Joining us will be the Scottsdale Fire Chief sharing his opinion and experiences with the pet rescue equipment, FIDO BAGS. We will have the honor of Captain Maureen Shannon to share her Search and Rescue experiences with her K9 partners from disasters such as 911, Katrina, and now locally here in our own Coconino County wilderness. Also, Reverend Liana Rowe from Soldier's Best Friend will tell us all how once homeless service dogs are changing the lives of some of our returning veterans.
All ticket sales are tax-deductible and go directly to our Homeless to Hero and FIDO BAG programs.

As summer approaches, it’s a perfect time for local business owners to breathe and begin strategic planning for fall marketing efforts.
The Carefree Cave Creek Chamber of Commerce reminds the business community that June 25 marks the deadline to be represented in the popular, annual Carefree Cave Creek Chamber of Commerce Community Guide, an 64-page reference guide showcasing the best and brightest business in the area.
The publication, with a circulation of nearly 30,000, has grown to become one of the most popular communication tools available to members, said Patty Villeneuve, executive director of the organization.
The full color magazine-style publication features useful tools including a business directory, and church and non-profit directory, visitor’s information, a relocation guide for new residents, plus useful facts and area information.
“We encourage businesses to become a members in order to be included in the directory. We also want to remind our current members to update their directory listings and ads by the June 25 deadline,” Villeneuve said.

The publication will be distributed in October and available at the Chamber’s Visitor Center, and all Chamber events. Advanced Theatre Project: For young artists ages 16-25
Project begins June 13 with retreat
Regular schedule starting June 15, is Mon. - Thurs., Noon - 5PM
In this advanced theatre project, young theatre artists work together from the bottom up to produce an intense summer drama. While participation is FREE, participants work together to run the business side of the production as well. They raise money; beg, borrow and plead items for costumes, sets and props; and to market the production so ticket sales can help cover the cost of the show. This summer they will be working on a production of Arthur Miller's The Crucible.

In a small tight-knit community, personal grievances collide with lust and superstition, fuelling widespread hysteria. Arthur Miller’s timeless parable attacks the evils of mindless persecution and the terrifying power of false accusations.

At Spirit in the Desert Retreat Center we are continually inspired by the stories our guests share of their experiences here:
What a grand time of year to come inhale the natural beauty here at Spirit in the Desert. We four women, all in our 80's, came with special needs: Health concerns, sudden death of adult child, moving out of home to retirement community.
Our hours here will help sustain us during this 3rd chapter of life.
I recently spent four days at Spirit in the Desert. My stay gave me an opportunity to pause and let my spirit catch up with me. Like most clergy, my day s are filled and weighted. I
have been to Spirit in the Desert three times in the last 5-6 years. I read, write, pray, walk and enjoy the saguaro, coyotes, snakes, sage, sun ... and your Jacuzzi! What you do for clergy is something wonderful!
I registered for a leadership conference thinking I would be here 7 months pregnant, excited and expecting my first child. Three weeks before there were complications in pregnancy and I delivered my baby stillborn. This week, I have been reminded of God's presence and love amidst the sorrow. The labyrinth gave me space to wander through my thoughts; it reminded me the journey is not always a straight path, but that God is at the heart of it all.

Acting for Theater & Film, Instruction by Scott Johnson ages 13-18
This camp will specialize in reality acting based on the techniques of Stella Adler, Sanford Meisner and Mr. Johnson’s own methods as developed over a 35-year acting, directing and coaching career. Mr. Johnson has coached acting in Phoenix and Burbank for more than 25 years. As a film actor he has appeared in seven movies, including Arizona Summer (left) as stage actor in more than 30-plays. His play Look at the Grouse! was featured as last summer’s Advanced Summer Project production.

Princess Camp
For princess lovers ages 3-5 - must be potty trained

In this fast-paced musical theatre camp, young artists put on an entire production in just two weeks...complete with costumes, sets, props, lights and more. The camp culminates in a high-energy hilarious new musical written in English pantomime style--which means it is overflowing with silly puns and site gags along with toe-tapping tunes.

Urgently Seeking Volunteers to Make a Difference
in the Lives of the Elderly
Do you want to make a difference in your own life and the lives of others?
The Foothills Caring Corps, a volunteer based non-profit organization serving the greater NE Valley, is seeking volunteers to share their talent, skills and time with the organization whose primary mission is to allow the elderly to remain independent and living in their homes.
Volunteers needed for such programs as:
-Van transportation
-Medical transportation
-Mobile meals
-Minor home repair
-Friendly visits
-Medical loan closet
The Foothills Caring Corps aims to provide a rewarding and gratifying experience for both the volunteer and the neighbor. Volunteers are given training, guidance and monitoring to ensure a quality experience. They are allowed to self-select areas in which they would like to be involved and are not required to contribute a minimum number of hours.
“The Caring Corps opens their arms to people with a variety of skills levels, talent and interests. Everyone has an something to contribute.”
The organization conducts monthly Volunteer Orientation sessions. The next sessions are scheduled for Thursday, May 14, from 9 – 11 a.m. at the Foothills Caring Corps offices located at 7275 E. Easy Street, Suite B103, Carefree.

Mesa Fire Dept Saves Dog with Fetch Foundation Equipment!
Mesa Fire E217 used the Fetch Foundation Fido Bag to save a dog after a house fire. "We're pleased to report the dog is doing well! We're happy we have special equipment on our apparatus to watch out for our extended family members."

Triple R Horse Rescue is a 501(c) 3 organization that rescues, rehabilitates and re-homes horses surrendered to its care. The organization, which is run 100% by volunteers, relies on support from the community to fulfill its mission. Located on three acres donated by Lil Bit North Ranch in Cave Creek, Ariz. Scully Learning Center was developed to provide Experiences to enrich the lives of our developmentally disabled participants. The Center is located on the banks of Cave Creek. The facility includes an organic garden; chickens, ducks, goats and tortoises;
computers; fully equipped kitchen; a fully equipped ceramic studio and several other art creation sites. In addition we provide opportunities for hiking and a variety of field trips. We recently added 3 Strider Pedaless Bikes and have added a race track to our wish list. We are staffed exclusively by volunteers and always welcome new ideas and new participants.

Team Job Search will assist food bank customers with job searches
Foothills Food Bank and Resource Center will offer Team Job Search to its customers who seek employment in the Cave Creek/Carefree area. Beginning in September 2014, Team Job Search will provide workshops to assist food bank customers in finding the best job.
Team Job Search, which was created by Richard McCarty, is a community program sponsored by the Foothills Food Bank that will help individuals reinvent the way they look for work. In today’s market place, 98% of all resumes go through an inhuman electronic screening process that rejects 75% of applications before they are viewed by a human being. Team Job Search will teach food bank customers proven techniques to ensure that applications and resumes are selected for interviews. Team Job Search will conduct meetings to introduce food bank clients to new methods for finding the right job. Workshop times and dates will be announced soon and all sessions will be held at Desert Foothills Library in Cave Creek.
The Foothills Food Bank and Resource Center provides emergency food, financial assistance and other life necessities and resources to individuals and families in the desert foothills, which encompasses a 180-square mile area that includes Black Canyon City, Cave Creek, Carefree, Anthem, Desert Hills, New River, north Scottsdale and north Phoenix.

Learn a new craft, hear a lecture, exercise your brain and more at the Foothills Community Foundation
Are you looking to learn a new craft or skill, like card making, digital photography or acting? Do you want to expand your mind by hearing a fascinating lecture or viewing a colorful art show? Or, maybe you’re up for a good game of Bingo or Bridge? These are just some of the many classes, events and activities offered for local residents of all ages at the Foothills Community Foundation’s (FCF) Holland Community Center, 34250 N. 60th Street, Bldg. B, in Scottsdale.
“We’re so fortunate to live in a community that cherishes arts and entertainment, that cares about sustainability and that welcomes the chance to learn from others,” said Chris Winger, FCF president and CEO. “Take advantage of our Holland Community Center…not only will you expand your mind, you’re sure to make some new friends or re-connect with old ones.”
FCF classes at the Holland Community Center include Brain Games, Bridge, Digital Photography, Adobe Photoshop Elements, an “Art Relaxation and Herbal Teas” class that includes Tai Chi relaxation exercises, and two Focus on Your Health classes about finding health help in the home and getting through the holidays after experiencing a loss.
Desert Foothills Theater (DFT) and the Desert Awareness Committee are also part of the Foothills Community Foundation. Cave Creek Museum re-opens for the season on Wed., Oct. 1. Located at 6140 Skyline Drive, the Museum features an extensive collection of prehistoric and historic artifacts that describe the lives of Native Americans, miners, ranchers and pioneers. The museum hours are Wed., Thurs., Sat. and Sun. from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Fri. from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Entrance fees are $5 for adults; $3 for seniors; and $2 for students. Children 12 and under are free.
One of the biggest highlights of the season will be monthly demonstrations of the Museum’s historic “Golden Reef” Stamp Mill which dates back to 1880 and was used to crush hard rock ore so that gold could be separated and saved. There have not been any operational Stamp Mills in Maricopa County since the closure of the Arizona Mining and Mineral Museum in 2011, and Cave Creek Museum’s Stamp Mill is the only operational 10-Stamp Mill in the state. The schedule of monthly demonstrations will be announced on Oct. 1.
Another new exhibit will be “Saddle Up,” a colorful display of horse saddles dating from 1890 to 1950, including one that was made for a professional baseball player. The new “Baskets, Baskets, Beautiful Baskets” exhibit features Native American baskets dating from the 1880s to the 1930s.
The baskets are from several Arizona tribes: Pima (O'Odham), Navajo, Apache, Havasupai, Yavapai and Papago (Tohono O'Odham). In addition, the Museum will unveil a new “Arizona’s Greatest Battle” exhibit that features history about what is considered to be the greatest recorded battle ever fought in Arizona. The 1857 battle was the last in a series of skirmishes in which the O’Odham (Pima) and Piipaash (Maricopa) fought their adversaries to the west. The exhibit will include a replica war shield, a war club, sandals and more on loan from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.
Lifestyle will also be highlighted in a new bola tie and “Dirty Laundry” washing machine exhibit.
“The washing machine was revolutionary because it changed a woman’s life dramatically,” said Evelyn Johnson, executive director of Cave Creek Museum. “We’ll show the evolution of this household task from 1870 through 1940.”
The museum will host several new children’s programs throughout the year and bring back popular annual events, including “A Miner’s Dinner” in November, “Antiques Appraisal Day” in January, “Authors’ Month” in February and its biggest fundraiser of the year, “Homes Through Time” home tour in March.

Large and heavy stamp mills were used in the late 1800s and through the 1920s to crush hard rock ore so that the gold could be separated and saved. At one time, many such mills were reported to exist in the Cave Creek Mining District. The Museum’s “Golden Reef Mine Stamp Mill” was declared to be an Arizona State Historic Property by Arizona State Parks in 1986. The Museum is particularly pleased to showcase this 10-Stamp Mill that came from its own mining district and was originally located on Continental Mountain.
