(Lyn's note: Please feel free to send us any pictures you'd like included.  If your photos are for sale, let us know and we will put them under that category.  We have a special section for that purpose, and have just added some art as well.  Check out Tom Baker's photos for sale.  He's the photographer who took that gorgeous photo in the Carefree Gardens Photo Contest that was both the judges' first pick and the public favorite.  It's now featured on the Town of Carefree website, and will be the cover of the 2014 Gardens calendar that will be for sale later this summer at Carefree Town Hall.  If anyone would like to buy a print of any of Herbert's photos, all profits will be donated to one of the local non-profit organizations.)  Here's the link to this week's Pictures of the Week.

Thanks for you excellent coverage of my recent report to the Town Council in Carefree on the Easy Street Project.  Timely, accurate reporting on new opportunities and plans for any town or city is such an important role in forming the future.  I appreciate your good work .

I love our Carefree firemen. Always bump into them at Basha's and ask what they're cooking for dinner.  They always give me their full recipes.  Sweet guys.

People can call Cactus Asphalt at two numbers about the “tar on tire” problem:
Joey Varela, Project Manager – 602 309-4715
Kyle Gooding, Project Manager – 602 350-8222
Mayor David Schwan
Town of Carefree, Arizona
480 488-3686 (Carefree Town Hall)
(Lyn's note: As work has begun on the residential street maintenance and repair program, a few people have gotten tar on their tires during the crack sealing process.  Some tire stores and dealerships convinced people to buy 4 new tires, telling them there is no way to remove the tar, which seems to be incorrect.  If you call these contact numbers, they can tell you how to remove it.  On a personal note, friends of ours are visiting.  They were coming up our street just as they finished the crack sealing, and got the tarry tires and the wobble.  We drove their mini van down to Scottsdale to meet another friend on Friday.  Doing 75 mph on the 101 got rid of a LOT of the tar, although the poor guy in the car behind us was not real happy as he weaved to dodge the tar bombs we were dropping.)

Hello,  I would like information regarding placing an ad with Carefree Truth.  I can be contacted either by phone (below cell is best) or email at evelyncaz@me.com.  Our business is Wild West Mall - although in Cave Creek - we serve Carefree with the business tenants. Thank you,
Evelyn Christopher

(Lyn's note: Thanks so much for asking.  I wish we could.  We love both towns and there are numerous businesses in Cave Creek that we use, but Carefree Truth is dedicated to Carefree, with the exception of the local non-profits.  We feel strongly that they do so much for our entire area.  The Desert Foothills Chronicle is an online paper that concentrates on Cave Creek and they will be happy to accept your ads.)

Thanks so much for a solution. We agree with your statement - living in one town .. business in the other town …

Step 1.  Shoot Self  in Foot
I noticed John Ford’s Guest Editorial (May 14, 2014) in the local paper.  At first I enjoyed the trip to Lake Woebegone, the stroll through memory lane with Mom & Pop, days in High School – I was expecting the Fonz to jump in somewhere.  Eventually we arrived at the purpose of his effort.  John wants to be on Town Council.

His campaign begins by invoking his “heroes” of the past without any specific deeds to be remembered.

From that fuzzy foundation he then takes a cursory slap at fiscal responsibility. There are never any details in this argument just “the town is weaker not stronger”. The voters are not stupid John; you would be advised to come up with five good examples of this.

John introduces his next platform issue, Transparency, with phrases designed to stir the blood,   “Land of Oz”, “hidden agendas”, “magic wand” and the ever popular “king maker moves”.  Here again he has no specifics so I’ll offer a couple of observations.  It seems to me that we today have the most transparent town government since the Davis no growth term. In just a few months this Council has implemented these transparency steps:

o   Live video streaming is provided for all Town Council meetings
o   An audio version is available within two days
o   The Coyote Connection newsletter is mailed monthly to all citizens
o   The Mayor and Vice Mayor conduct weekly office hours for any citizen on any topic
o   The Town’s checkbook is available online
o   Information is provide monthly by the Utilities Department
o   A budget workshop open to the public was conducted
o   Monthly financial data appears on the Town’s website

John, you apparently are parroting what Don wants you to say. You have also confused transparency with the departure of the town manager.  Now, could his departure have been handled better? Many people think so.  You question a lack of discussion with the town manager on the issues.  Was he not in office for twelve years?  Did he not build a water tank on land the Town did not own costing taxpayers $1,200,000?  How much observation is necessary? No John, many, many people are glad he is not there. The rant about the town manager is old news and I guess that harking back to a procedural miscue that took place fifteen months ago (the election is in November?) probably won’t get much traction.

And now John for your classic blunder.  The Town of Cave Creek is a COUNCIL – MANAGER
form of government. The Council is an elected body that hires a manager to carry out Council’s policies.  That you could lack this knowledge belies your qualifications for elected office.  Your confusion on this fundamental fact is probably a mortal blow. Don misstated the council-manager relationship incessantly for the previous town manager’s power and benefit.  Even Don’s lies and slander will carry you only so far in the face of this clumsy inaccuracy.

John, welcome to the campaign trail, but it appears you’d best come up with a MVP game plan because your rhetoric, a lack of the basics of Government 101 and a return to Happy Days ain’t gonna do it.
But keep shooting – you might even hit the other foot.  I can’t wait.

Cave Creek Councilman
