Letters from Readers: 6/1/13
(Lyn's note: Please feel free to send us any pictures you'd like included. If your photos are for sale, let us know and we will put them under that category. We have a special section for that purpose. Check out Tom Baker's photos for sale. He's the photographer who took that gorgeous photo in the Carefree Gardens Photo Contest that was both the judges' first pick and the public favorite. It's now featured on the Town of Carefree website, and will be the cover of the 2014 Gardens calendar that will be for sale later this summer at Carefree Town Hall. If anyone would like to buy a print of any of Herbert's photos, all profits will be donated to one of the local non-profit organizations.) Here's the link to this week's Pictures of the Week.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
SABAS MEDITERRANEAN CUISINE IS CEASING OPERATION IN CAREFREE AS OF JUNE 3, 2013. WE HAVE DECIDED TO MOVE ON A DIFFERENT PATH FOR OUR FUTURE. WE WOULD LIKE TO THANK EVERYONE WHO SUPPORTED US THE PAST SIX YEARS. IT HAS BEEN AWESOME TO KNOW AND SERVE YOU IN OUR PLACE, SABAS. IT WAS A VERY HARD DECISION FOR US. WE ARE VERY SORRY TO LEAVE THIS TOWN AND FRIENDS. WE ALWAYS FELT THAT YOU ARE NOT JUST FRIENDS OR CUSTOMERS FOR US; YOU ARE OUR GUESTS IN OUR PLACE.
OSCAR WILL BE AT THE RESTAURANT FOR THE NEXT THREE DAYS TO SEE THOSE WHO WISH TO SAY GOODBYE.
ONCE AGAIN, THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS YOU.
AYSUN & OSCAR TURKMEN
Lyn,
I'm a "Vanguard" member of the Planetary Resource Institute (PRI) who has started a new project to make a space-based telescope available to anyone for projects. One of the primary thoughts re. this program is that individuals could purchase time on the telescope that could be donated to schools. Anyway, I can't think of anyone better to help spread the word or more importantly put knowledge of this project in the hands of local school administrators.. If you would forward, or perhaps give me a couple suggested e-mail addresses, I'd appreciate it.
The link for viewing the project details in it's entirety is: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1458134548/arkyd-a-space-telescope-for-everyone-0?ref=live

Does anyone realize that Glenn was accepted to the Air Force Academy with a full ride and chose not to attend for family reasons? No small task. My son with a 3.4 grade average and a star hockey player at the country's 4th rated prep school was wait listed.
Holly Bergman
Lyn,
I have to agree with this as we often take some friends to Kierland for the fountain pool there. Having the Coldstone ice cream shop next to the fountain doesn't hurt either!
Maybe we can get a DQ branch?
Tom Surrency
You can always sell the bricks/tiles to people so that they can remember a loved one or have their family name or charity listed. Lots of ways to fund this type of project. Splash Pad extraordinaire. Corporate and private donors makes for best mix on ownership of idea.
Susan M.
Lyn:
What a "cool" idea (pun intended) ! The splash pad would be a real enhancement for Carefree and bring joy to everyone. Just looking at it makes you happy. Herbie did a fantastic job with the video. You two are doing so much to make our town an even better place. Thank you.
Marie Christensen
What are we aiming to do? Have another tacky "Water World?"
Louise S.
Several life lessons come to mind reading Carefree Truth #251. (re: splash pads and shade)
1.The perfect is the enemy of the good. (The two projects proposed by the Town have had multiple grades of "good.")
2.Lead, follow, or get out of the way . . .
3.Paralysis by analysis . . .
4.Do it, try it, fix it . . .
and, from a former Mayor, "KGDS!"
John Blair
If I did not see this in print, I would feel someone was doing a Saturday Night Live work up to roast Carefree. If anyone comes to Carefree looking for shade and water, call the Army, they would be outer space aliens.
If Carefree needs a roadmap, to help us find our synergy, forget about it, we are forever lost!
What more evidence do we need to see that we are studying our navels and not looking at real life? Real life is when adults make the best decisions they can and go with them. Some are good, some are not so good. Trying to make Carefree the best amusement park, garden, entertainment, synergetic retail bonanza destination is so far from reality it cannot be achieved with a hundred splash pools.
I hope this help save Carefree from a $5000 waste of money!
(Another unsigned note from a reader who has had enough threats after similar posted sentiments.)
Hi Lyn, Jan Misseri here. Just would like to put a little something in the great "Carefree Truth". I am searching for a position as an administrative assistant/customer service provider as well as a pet sitter. I've worked in all of these areas for the past sixteen years and can provide references. I live in Carefree so I am readily available to all in the area. Please feel free to contact me either by email - casbin@aol.com or by phone - 480-488-5182.
Thank you so much,
Jan

Kiwanis Presents 2013
Scholarships & Merit Awards
The May 15th meeting was a celebration of the accomplishments of six extraordinary students by honoring them with well-deserved scholarships and merit awards. Two four-year scholarships, one two-year scholarship, the Mathematics Merit Award, the Science Merit Award, the Kiwanis Key Club Award and one discretionary award. Louise Rosenburgh, Chair of the Scholarship Committee, took to the podium to introduced the recipients.
Four-Year Scholarships
Nicholas Deininger—Nicholas is an especially active member of the Kiwanis Key Club. He was elected Lieutenant Governor of the Lookout Mountain Division of the Southwest District. Nicholas is a member of the Student Council and has logged over 200 hours of volunteer work and is dedicated to helping others. His leadership skills and dedication to community service lead Manny Gonzalez to provide a solid recommendation for us to consider and interview Nicholas for this award. Upon graduation, Nicholas plans to attend college to become an aerospace engineer.
Ryan Dietzenbach—After attending two other out-of-state high schools, in Iowa and Colorado, Ryan arrived in Arizona in 2010. Ryan’s determination has helped him to overcome some very difficult life challenges. Despite the difficulties in his life, upon graduation Ryan will have successfully completed 11 honors courses and played drums for Cactus Shadows musicals. He is an active member of Key Club, NHS and both the French and English Honors Societies. Ryan has already received early acceptance at American University, Washington, D.C. but his goals don’t stop there. Once he graduates from college, Ryan hopes to attend an Ivy League law school to pursue a career in politics. Ryan’s ultimate goal is to become President of the United States.
Two-Year Scholarship
Madison Hayse—Madison Hayes is an exceptional individual. As a senior in high school, she studies, volunteers, plays and works. An honors student at Cactus Shadows, Madison enjoys participating in her school’s extra-curricular athletic programs and being an active member of the Desert Foothills Key Club. In addition, Madison has logged over 100 hours at the Foothills Animal Rescue, exceeding the required volunteer time caring for rescued cats and dogs. Madison is a shift leader at Subway and in June will become certified in Yoga. She also enjoys babysitting. After graduation, Madison will attend Paradise Community College.
Mathematics Merit Award and Science Merit Award
We are pleased to honor Stephanie Rioux with both the Mathematics and the Science Merit Awards. A driven and accomplished student, Stephanie has earned the Mathematics Merit Award by achieving a 4.8 weighted grade point average with an extensive course load including Algebra 1-2 and 3-4, pre-calculus honors, AP/1B, along with math 220, calculus with analytic geometry through Paradise Valley Community College. Stephanie participated in the International Baccalaureate Program and completed investigations requiring finding patterns and solutions. She hopes to utilize mathematical approaches to solve real world problems.
In addition to the Mathematics Merit Award, Stephanie has been selected by the Scholarship Committee to receive the Science Merit Award. Stephanie’s course load includes honors biology, honors chemistry, honors physics, AP/1B physics, all of which she has achieved the highest grades. This enterprising young lady intends to become an aerospace engineer and through her own initiative contacted both ASU Engineering and Embry Riddle Aeronautical University requesting use of their test labs for a research project. Upon approval from ASU, Stephanie conducted testing on carbon fiber composites for damages and weaknesses in consistency of small structures. We’ll have to ask her to explain that to us some time! This is a young woman intent achieving her goals and we are pleased to help her in her endeavors.
Key Club Award
Kevin Calabrese—Kevin is committed to community service and a exceedingly active member of Key Club. His extensive contributions and regular participation in the Kiwanis activities include flea markets, pancake breakfasts, car washes, Christmas pageant, luminary lighting, Easter Festival, bowling night and so much more. Kevin has attended Kiwanis International conventions and Southwest District conventions. Kevin also assisted Barbara Hatch, Founder, Veterans Heritage Project, to interview a woman who served in Iraq and Veterans from World War II, Korea, and Vietnam. Upon graduation, Kevin plans to attend college, where he will most definitely draw upon his many positive life experiences gained through Key Club and community service. We are so proud to assist Kevin with his plans for the future.
Special Committee Award
Katie Kaufman—Each year, the Scholarship Committee reserves a special award to honor an extraordinary and talented individual who is dedicated to her future profession. This year, the Committee honors Katie Kaufman of Cactus Shadows High School. Amongst her many accomplishments, Katie was instrumental in organizing a blood drive at Cactus Shadows and for and recruiting 200 donors. Just a few weeks ago, Debbie Burdick, fellow Kiwanian and superintendent of CCUSD, announced that Katie was the winner of the Superintendent’s Challenge Award. Katie consistently demonstrates how focused she is on achieving her goals in life. She plans to become a surgeon and already has ready begun implementing that plan by volunteering at Mayo Clinic, Scottsdale between 8-12 hours per week and four hours a week at Hospice of the Valley in addition to her studies. After much persistence, Katie has been given approval to shadow surgeries at Mayo, despite initially being told she must be a medical student to do so. Katie will attend ASU upon graduation and intends to continue on to medical program being implemented through Mayo’s upcoming partnership with ASU to provide a medical program in the Valley. We wish Katie much success and are pleased to assist her in meeting her goals.
