CAREFREE TRUTH

Thanks for the reminder, Lyn. I believe we have the opportunity to see a marked improvement in the attendance and participation of our citizens at council meetings if the first meeting I attended with the new council is any indication. I was pleased with the Mayor’s conduct of the meeting, level of preparedness, decorum, and just overall professionalism demonstrated by the new council members. It was evident they understood how to effectively work with our staff and had done their homework prior to the council meeting which, as a result, lasted only about an hour. They came prepared, understood the issues, asked good questions, and didn’t waste time through lack of preparation or pursuing personal political agendas. This was a great beginning. If it continues, I believe we will see increased citizen input and involvement. This council has the potential to return Carefree to the kind of management and professionalism which produced the many significant accomplishments we have achieved since incorporation and has placed us in such a solid and enviable financial situation among towns our size. The challenges going forward are clear and I have the impression this council has a good focus and understanding of the priorities. I share Councilman Van Allen’s admonition to the community.

Lyn, I sure appreciate Carefree Truth...its such a terrific communication tool! Thanks for being its creator!

Is anyone discussing the fact that we're in the middle of summer and many are out of town until August or even later. If the town wants participation from all its citizens the council might want to schedule some visionary meetings at a time when the majority of folks will be back in town. Perhaps a series strategically scheduled to maximize attendance from a wide cross section of the citizenry would make sense? What do you think?

Hope you have a "cool" summer!

Cheers,

Jamie Drinkwater Buchanan

(Lyn's note: This workshop is just the beginning of a Visioning process that will extend through the fall and early winter, and will coordinate with the General Plan update that has been underway for several months. There will be many opportunities for citizen participation in both during the upcoming months.)
