Lyn's note: Please feel free to send us any pictures you'd like included.  If your photos are for sale, let us know and we will put them under that category.  We have a special section for that purpose.  Check out Tom Baker's photos for sale.  He's the photographer who took that gorgeous photo in the Carefree Gardens Photo Contest that was both the judges' first pick and the public favorite.  It's now featured on the Town of Carefree website, and will be the cover of the 2014 Gardens calendar that will be for sale later this summer at Carefree Town Hall.  If anyone would like to buy a print of any of Herbert's photos, all profits will be donated to one of the local non-profit organizations.)  Here's the link to this week's Pictures of the Week.

Yes, congrats, Commissioner!

Michelle Lombardi

Recently I contacted the Carefree Water Company, paying my late father's bill, advising them of his passing and asking future bills be send to me. Not only did they remove the late charge on the account, but the employees send me a hand written sympathy note!

Their expression of care, concern and comfort to me and my family was, and is, like a breath of fresh air!

In the troubled times in which we live, it is nice to know there are still such great people shining their light! Keep up the good work.

Betsy is one great lady and a gift to our Carefree.  Yes, I watched the video.  Herbie does a great job for everyone!  Super job Herbie.

Mike Krahe

I like the end, Herbie.

Glenn Miller

Love the video Herbie!!!

Binka Schwan

Great, GREAT, GREAT video!!!

David Schwan

That video was awesome and yes, she's probably going to kill Herbie for the ending -- a great tribute to a legend in Carefree.

Melissa Price

Fun to watch.

You crack me up!  Too funny!

Patty Meese

Hi Lyn.  Please let your readers know to be on the lookout for burglars! I went to my listing at 7885 E. Breathless today, and they had been burglarized.

Will Donaldson

(Lyn's note: MCSO has repeatedly asked the citizens to be their eyes and ears, and to call 911 if we see activity that looks out of place or suspicious in any way.  They would rather investigate something that turns out to be perfectly innocent than try to solve a crime after the fact.)

We love the Venues Restaurant.  Let's support them.

Lyn,

There are amazing books offered for sale each month at the Desert Foothills Library 'Used Book Sale.'

Every month the Desert Foothills Library runs "Used Book Sales" on the 1st Saturday of the month and the Friday which precedes it. Remaining used books are sold at reduced prices on Sunday. At each sale there are literally hundreds, sometimes thousands, of interesting books offered at very reasonable prices. Recent best sellers, special interest books, children's books, historic books. These books have been donated to the Library by local residents during the preceding month, and the Library places some of these in its inventory of books to loan out and the balance are sold at the Used Book Sale as a fund raising event for the Library.

The next Used Book Sale will be Friday and Saturday, July 5th and 6th. Stop in and browse through the books offered for sale and pick out some interesting ones. And look for the new signs which have just been delivered which will be going up around town just before each Used Book Sale to remind all of us.

Thanks for passing this on.

Les Peterson

(Lyn's note: As you can see below, CFT is already on the Desert Foothills Library's email list, and I always add their notices to Letters, as I do for any of our local non-profits who wish to get free PR.  I suspect I'll be getting this next week from the Library, but it never hurts to print something more than once.  I have gotten books from Chapter Two, their book store.  I love getting bargains, I've always been an avid reader and I confess to liking a real book in my hands.  Herbert and I also support the Library through donations, and we have library cards.  We love the Library.

By the way, Readers, if you are interested in seeing neat photos, the Library sponsored Photo Contest entries are now on display.  There are some really good ones, so stop in and take a look.  4 of them are Herbert's.)

Please remember that residents of Maricopa County (including children!) can get a library card with proof of address.  A regular cardholder can check out three (3) dvds at a time.

June 24 - June 30

Did YOU Know

With just a few days left of our Membership Drive, the success of our POWER Lunch last Wednesday and the deadline fast approaching for the printing of the Chamber Guide, what better way to start off this week then with a bunch of RANDOM fun facts.  Ya, it doesn't make any sense but what kind of a intro do you use when you are going to ask - Did YOU Know - Every time you lick an envelope, you're consuming 1/10 of a calorie. Hard to fit that in but as you received your orange form with your listing for the Chamber Guide remember - someone had to lick that envelope.  So, enjoy the last week of June, stay cool with the HOT temps and now for some fun and definitely random fun facts. Did YOU Know..

~If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days, you would have produced enough sound energy to heat one cup of coffee.

~The human heart creates enough pressure when it pumps out to the body to squirt blood 30 feet.

~Banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories an hour.

~A person cannot taste food unless it is mixed with saliva. For example, if strong-tasting substance like salt is placed on a dry tongue, the taste buds will not be able to taste it. As soon as a drop of saliva is added and the salt is dissolved, however, a definite taste sensation results. This is true for all foods. Try it!

~The average person falls asleep in seven minutes.

~Elephants are the only mammals that can't jump.

~Your stomach has to produce a new layer of mucus every two weeks otherwise it will digest itself

~It's possible to lead a cow upstairs...but not downstairs.

~The ant can lift 50 times its own weight, can pull 30 times its own weight and always falls over on its right side when intoxicated.  I would love to be the one who tests this fun fact, well just the intoxicated part.

~A cockroach will live nine days without it's head, before it starves to death.

~If NASA sent birds into space they would soon die; they need gravity to swallow.

~A duck's quack doesn't echo, and no one knows why.

~An ostrich's eye is bigger that it's brain.

~Snails can sleep for 3 years without eating

~The strongest muscle in proportion to its size in the human body is the tongue.

~Armadillos are the only animal besides humans that can get leprosy. - I wonder who tested that one out???

~Orcas (killer whales) kill sharks by torpedoing up into to shark's stomach from underneath, causing the shark to explode.

~The only 15 letter word that can be spelled without repeating a letter is "uncopyrightable".

~Stewardesses is the longest word that is typed with only the left hand.

~No word in the English language rhymes with month, orange, silver, and purple.

~111,111,111 x 111,111,111 = 12,345,678,987,654,321

~If you toss a penny 10,000 times, it will not be heads 5000 times, but more like 4950. The heads picture weighs more, so it ends up on the bottom.

~Months that begin on a Sunday will always have a "Friday the 13th."

And to end the Random facts - Here is a really weird and random fun fact!!

~It was discovered on a space mission that a frog can throw up. The frog throws up its stomach first, so the stomach is dangling out of its mouth. Then the frog uses its forearms to dig out all of the stomach's contents and then swallows the stomach back down again.  GROSS!!!!!

Monsoon is Coming

If you have lived in Arizona for longer than one year you are well aware of the "Monsoon Season".  With the humidity just right, lightning, rain and not to mention all of the dust, you know that these days can be very dangerous if caught outside or driving in your car.

Thanks to the good guys (Ron Welch) of Karsten's Ace Hardware, we were notified of a very useful App for your smart phone.  It is called Dust Storm and it was developed by a group at University of Arizona. This app is very informative.  It will inform you of a dust storm that is headed your way, Survival Kit essentials, and very important safety tips if you are caught in a storm. This app will allow you to enter important phone numbers, insurance policy numbers and more - everything you need just in case of an emergency.   All of this and it is FREE!
