CAREFREE TRUTH
Letters from Readers: 8/1/11
Lyn,
You "published" two "Letters from Readers" in this Carefree Truth E-Mail, both from Ron Nelson. First, I thank you for your continuing engagement in Carefree issues and for the time you put into Carefree Truth. That said, Ron Nelson indicates that he "just hope(s) that all these letters get sent to the council so they can study what the citizens think". All what letters? And how is it that Ron Nelson thinks he knows "what the citizens of Carefree think"? Raising the speed limit 5 MPH is SO incremental - it will not change behavior, will not cause more accidents (safety), and will improve the flow of traffic. If we have drivers that do not have adequate "reaction time" they should not have drivers licenses or should plan on waiting a little longer to merge into traffic that is traveling incrementally at a higher speed - all the way up to 30 MPH. For the record, I concur with Paul Basha that "driver (and citizen" comfort - the ability to "get through our town" and where you want to go efficiently and safely despite the revenue-generating speed traps - is paramount. I appreciate Paul Basha's initiative and I hope the council follows his recommendation.

Always having utmost respect for Ron Nelson as a good citizen and good thinker, I bow to his wisdom. My endorsement of Paul Basha was for him as a personal friend. I recall good friends who were not always right. Hi Ron! I miss good folks like you. KGDS!!

Lyn, I would not consider 30 mph excessive. I do have quite a lot of friends who like to bug me about living in a speed trap town!

Hi Lyn,
I emailed the town and the mayor about my thoughts on raising the speed limit. We have been around long enough to remember why the speed limit was lowered to 25 mph. We had a couple of fatal accidents on Tom Darlington which were caused by excessive speed. Speed does kill. I think we have lost sight of that old phrase. To have the current limit at 25 mph means that most people drive 30-35 mph as they go through town with a couple of us still abiding by the posted 25 mph. Raise the limit to 30 mph and drivers will take it as an invitation to go 35 mph to 40 mph. So let's just let it be as it is.
