(Lyn's note: Please feel free to send us any pictures you'd like included.  If your photos are for sale, let us know and we will put them under that category.  We have a special section for that purpose.  Check out Tom Baker's photos for sale.  He's the photographer who took that gorgeous photo in the Carefree Gardens Photo Contest that was both the judges' first pick and the public favorite.  It's now featured on the Town of Carefree website, and will be the cover of the 2014 Gardens calendar that will be for sale later this summer at Carefree Town Hall.  If anyone would like to buy a print of any of Herbert's photos, all profits will be donated to one of the local non-profit organizations.)  Here's the link to this week's Pictures of the Week.

Thanks Lyn. Looks like it will be a good communications link for the community...with a positive attitude.

Any idea what is going on? Cave Creek Road is closed at Carefree HWY with Emergency Signs - You need to go around Black Mountain to get to Sentinel Rock!
Judie Preston
(Lyn's note: On Friday night, 8/16 a 17 year old boy in a car hit a man in his 50s riding a bicycle on Cave Creek Rd., near New River Rd.  The bicyclist's injuries were fatal.  Both lanes of Cave Creek Rd. were closed last night between New River and El Sendero.  How tragic for both parties.)

Roadway Safety in Carefree
Carefree citizens can help ensure that our roadways are safe.
Protecting MCSO Deputies
A number of drivers in Carefree routinely ignore two important traffic laws that affect the safety of MCSO Deputies.  Arizona and most other states have laws which state:
If a person who drives a vehicle approaches a stationary vehicle and the stationary vehicle is giving a signal by displaying alternately flashing lights or is displaying warning lights, the person shall do either of the following:
1.  If on a highway having at least four lanes with at least two lanes proceeding in the same direction as the approaching vehicle, proceed with due caution and if possible, with due regard to safety and traffic conditions, yield the right of way by making a lane change into a lane not adjacent to that of the stationary vehicle.
2. If changing lanes would be impossible or unsafe, proceed with due caution and reduce the speed of the vehicle, maintaining a safe speed for road conditions.
If you see a MCSO vehicle at the side of the road please slow down and move to the center lane to protect the MCSO Deputies.
Protecting Bicyclists
Many bicyclists travel through Carefree. Please observe safety precautions to protect our guests.
Here’s some general information on bicycle safety:
Be aware of bikes- Cyclists have the same legal right to use the road as motorists…same roads, same rules, same rights and responsibilities.

Three feet minimum- Arizona law requires that you give at least three feet of clearance when you pass a bicycle.  Slow down and don’t pass a cyclist until safe to do so.  When possible, please give five feet of clearance when passing.

Look before opening your door- Opening your car door in a crowded area can be disastrous to a cyclist riding near parked cars.  Drivers are legally required to make sure it’s safe before opening a car door into the roadway.

Hi Lyn:
Regarding the prior emails about folks having to go all the way around Black Mountain in order to get into Sentinel Rock last Friday -  I was caught in that tragic traffic mess also.  I have a back way and used it last Friday.  It worked just fine.
From Carefree Highway (going west)
Turn Right onto 52nd St. ( paved road)  there is a sign that says "road closed - local traffic only" ignore it or consider yourself "local'
Turn Right onto New River Road  (paved road) - and note: you can get to Cave Creek Road from here - but last Friday you would not have been able to
Turn Left on Canyon Creek Road (paved road)
Turn Right on Prickly Pear Road (paved road)
Turn Left on Butte Canyon Drive (paved road)
Turn Right on Willow Cross Drive (paved road)
Turn Left on Canyon Ridge North Drive (paved road)
Turn Right on Canyon Ridge Drive (paved road)
this empties out on Cave Creek Road - across the street from our Sentinel Rock entrance.
- so there is an alternate way on this side of the mountain in the event a similar road block reoccurs.
