(Lyn's note: Please feel free to send us any pictures you'd like included. If your photos are for sale, let us know and we will put them under that category. We have a special section for that purpose. Check out Tom Baker's photos for sale. He's the photographer who took that gorgeous photo in the Carefree Gardens Photo Contest that was both the judges' first pick and the public favorite. It's now featured on the Town of Carefree website, and will be the cover of the 2014 Gardens calendar that will be for sale later this summer at Carefree Town Hall. If anyone would like to buy a print of any of Herbert's photos, all profits will be donated to one of the local non-profit organizations.) (Lyn's note: Friday evening, August 23, Darrin Conrad was hit by a car while riding his bicycle. He was not wearing a helmet and died from head trauma. He is survived by his wife and 3 children. The Darrin Conrad Family Fund has been established at Parkway Bank for those wishing to donate towards helping his family.)
Ghost Bike Project
For those that were inquiring about the white bike left at the accident scene on Cave Creek and New River roads; It is from the Ghost Bike Project http://ghostbikes.org/
"Ghost Bikes are small and somber memorials for bicyclists who are killed or hit on the street. A bicycle is painted all white and locked to a street sign near the crash site, accompanied by a small plaque. They serve as reminders of the tragedy that took place on an otherwise anonymous street corner, and as quiet statements in support of cyclists' right to safe travel."
Kandace French
Town Clerk/Treasurer
Town of Carefree
Ghost Bike Project
Dear Mayor Schwan:
Thank you for sending the link about the Ghost Bike Project to the three Carefree subdivisions on N. Cave Creek Road.
I saw the ghost bike the day it was installed. I have mixed feelings about it, as I do the makeshift memorial. One part of me thinks it is good to pay tribute to someone who has lost their life, but another part asks whether it is another potential distraction for motorists and could it cause another accident? There is a need to attempt to educate drivers to be on the lookout for motor cycles, bicycles as well as pedestrians and other vehicles. Is a 'ghost bike', or any other memorial, a help or a hindrance?
Even though I am no longer a Member of the Town Council, I ask myself what is in the best interest of the Town and its resident and visitors. At what point does the Town have to accept memorials in the Town's right-of-way? I am assuming that it is in the right-of-way. Currently, it is small, but I have seen roadside memorials that impede traffic. If the Town allows it, how much more will the Town have to allow? If the Town removes it, after a reasonable period, is the Town going to be criticized for being heartless?
I am sure that there are smarter people than I who know much more about whether a situation like this is a distraction.
Arthur Gimson
(Lyn's note: The Ghost Bike was removed on Sunday, August 24. It was not removed by the Town of Carefree. Its removal remains a mystery.)

Hi Lyn, Jan Misseri here. Just would like to put a little something in the great "Carefree Truth". I am searching for a position as an administrative assistant/customer service provider as well as a pet sitter.

Lyn, yesterday I heard of a new initiative to allow a better means for citizens to provide constructive input to the Arizona legislature.
It is build around a website, www.AZvoices.gov. That is an official State of Arizona site. It is up and running.
This may be particularly useful to the citizens of Carefree since the recent redistricting.

What: World War II, a Legacy of Letters: One Soldier’s Journey
Clinton Frederick returned to his grandparents' house for a family wedding in 2002. In the attic, just as he'd remembered, were memorabilia from WWII. In a trunk under the rafters, Clinton made a discovery that would change his life forever. Inside were more than hundred letters written by his father, Captain George Frederick. This correspondence chronicled from a most personal standpoint some of the major events that shaped the world. The letters also allowed Clinton Frederick, for the first time in his life, to know what his father was really like. WWII - A Legacy of Letters, is a true story of love and war, and received The American Author’s Association’s highest rating. In it, Frederick discusses how he artfully wove together his father's letters with historical information about some of the most important military campaigns of the war. Signed books will be available for a special price: $10 cash only.
