Letters from Readers & Events: 8/6/14
(Lyn's note: Please feel free to send us any pictures you'd like included. If your photos are for sale, let us know and we will put them under that category. We have a special section for that purpose, and have just added some art as well. Check out Tom Baker's photos for sale. He's the photographer who took that gorgeous photo in the Carefree Gardens Photo Contest that was both the judges' first pick and the public favorite. It's now featured on the Town of Carefree website, and will be the cover of the 2014 Gardens calendar that will be for sale later this summer at Carefree Town Hall. If anyone would like to buy a print of any of Herbert's photos, all profits will be donated to one of the local non-profit organizations.) Here's the link to this week's Pictures of the Week.

There is a new, permanent facility for people to dispose of unwanted/unneeded drugs at the MCSO District 4 Office. The detailed information is below.
I would appreciate any publicity your publication can provide for this service to citizens. Please contact me at 480 488-3686 or Captain Dante Proto (MCSO at (602) 876-1742 for more details.
Sincerely,
Mayor David Schwan
Town of Carefree, Arizona

MedReturn Box - New Drug Disposal Facility
Citizens can drop off not needed or expired prescription drugs and over-the-counter drugs at a new drug disposal facility. The new disposal container is permanently located at the MCSO District 4 Office, 37622 N. Cave Creek Road, Cave Creek, AZ.
A partnership between the Arizona Crime Prevention Association, Inc. (ACPA), the Arizona Attorney General’s office, Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) and the Town of Carefree has created this new way of removing prescription and over-the-counter drugs from your home. The following table lists what is accepted in the new drug disposal container:
Allowed
Not Allowed
Prescription patches
Inhalers
Prescription medications
Needles/sharps
Prescription Ointments
Thermometers
Over the counter medications
Medication from businesses or clinics
Vitamins
Lotions and liquids
Samples
Aerosol cans
Medications for pets
Citizens are encouraged to use this new facility to dispose of drugs. Placing drugs in the trash or flushing them into the sewer contaminates the environment and is unsafe. Eliminating these drugs from your home removes the possibility they can be used inappropriately.
Please call MCSO District 4 with any questions at (602) 876-1742.
Lyn:
Council Member Melissa Price is to be commended for her message encouraging Carefree residents to “get involved”.
During my one two-year term, which, if you count the pre-term training, was about 27 months, I was continually amazed at the poor attendance at Council meetings and various workshops on planning and budgets.
I would ask myself, “Is it just apathy, or are the Carefree residents happy with letting the Carefree staff, Mayor and Council do their respective jobs?”
While I do not have a definitive answer, I do know many of the players involved with the Town staff, the Water Company, the Court and the Mayor and Council and I am appreciative of their time, effort and dedication.
Add to that, we have Carefree Truth with Lyn and Dr. Herbie to keep us informed with written recaps and video replays. It is great to get the news without all the mudslinging. Keep up the good work.
Arthur Gimson
(Lyn's note: I too know our excellent Town staff and Council members well. It is human nature to sit back and let people do their jobs if they feel they are doing them well. COINS and Carefree Truth are provided for those who want to keep up with Council meetings, and the Town website is a great source of in-depth information on large projects and Ordinances at www.carefree.org.
Councilperson Melissa Price makes a good point. Most of us lucky enough to live in this wonderful environment have been blessed with superior educations, have had business opportunities that trained us to make analytical decisions. With that comes the obligation to pitch in when your town needs your skills. None of us are trained planners, but we know what we like about living here.

Good Morning, Lyn. You offer such a wonderful service to the community. I always love to see “what’s happening” through your e-blasts. Thank you for advertising our Tuesday Pasta Night. We’ve gotten good feedback already. Also, just FYI, the Lariat is no longer offering that Summer Lunch Special (the wraps….) and I neglected to tell you that. Just for the next distribution update, if you would be so kind. I hope you’re doing great. Take care, and thanks again for all you do.

Hi Lyn,
BJ and I have been going to the Inn for years, even before it became the Inn that it is today, and we stayed overnight a lot when we were preparing our house for move-in.
It is a great asset for the Carefree community. You're right - We should go more often.
Joe DeVito
(Lyn's note: Joe had asked me for more info on the Carefree Resort's Tuesday dinner pasta special. I told him it is delicious pasta, and that we frequently dine at the Lariat Restaurant at the Resort. I said it's a shame that more locals don't know how good it is and that it's reasonably priced, not "resort" priced.)
Lyn, this looks just terrific and I greatly appreciate the opportunity.
What stellar company I am in!
Privilege!!! Thanks, again...

This is why we, and many other artists, find a $3 admission offensive!
Day Weekend
Sausalito Art Festival $25
La Jolla Art Festival $14 $16
American Crafts Council, San Francisco $14 $30
Contemporary Crafts Festival $8
Anything less than $8 should be free admission!

I told Glenn you were right, you can get a cocktail for $4 even $2 at our place in the summer.

Lyn, I absolutely agree that this was the correct conclusion.

As a Carefree resident who has attended all the Thunderbird Artist shows, every day they are open, (I live across the street from the Carefree Desert Gardens). I must say this. I know some of the artists by name and have had many discussions with Artists about sales. A good percent say, when it comes to sales, Carefree has them all beat, not only in quantity but quality also.

A good move for Carefree and TBA. Come to Arkansas for the $4 cocktails! Of course we make our own "moonshine".
KGDS!!

Many thanks...you are a Carefree treasure!
