We have a special section for that purpose. Check out Tom Baker's photos for sale. It's now featured on the Town of Carefree website, and will be the cover of the 2014 Gardens calendar that will be for sale later this summer at Carefree Town Hall. If anyone would like to buy a print of any of Herbert's photos, all profits will be donated to one of the local non-profit organizations.) Here's the link to this week's Pictures of the Week.

Desert Foothills Land Trust Announces
2013 Mountains of the Land Trust Photo Contest
Capture the Beauty of Black Mountain and Daisy Mountain and Inspire the Protection of the Landscape You Love!
(Carefree/Cave Creek/Phoenix/Anthem, AZ) – Desert Foothills Land Trust is pleased to announce the start of the 2013 Mountains of the Land Trust Photo Contest! The photo contest is intended to encourage a deeper appreciation for the unique characteristics of Black Mountain and Daisy Mountain – the landmarks at the heart of our Desert Foothills communities. Photos can be taken any time, but should feature Black Mountain or Daisy Mountain in some way.
In 2009, Desert Foothills Land Trust merged with Black Mountain Conservancy and continued the Conservancy’s Black Mountain Photo Contest. In early 2013, Desert Foothills Land Trust merged with North Country Conservancy, who had also long hosted a photo contest celebrating Daisy Mountain. We are pleased to now host a contest that celebrates BOTH of these iconic mountains in our communities!
Complete contest rules and entry forms are available at the Desert Foothills Land Trust office at 7518 E. Elbow Bend in Carefree, as well as the Town of Carefree, Town of Cave Creek and Anthem administrative offices. Rules and entry forms are also available on the Land Trust’s website at www.dflt.org. Photo contest entries will be accepted through 4:00 pm on October 18, 2013.
Professional photographers Alan Lowy, Kazu Okutomi, Richard Rubenstein, Jerry Sieve and Mike Spinelli will review all entries and choose 13 winning photos, including one in the “under 18 years old” category. These selections will be announced to the media, and these photos will then go on public display for viewing and voting for the “People’s Choice Award.” The photos will be shown at Anthem Autumnfest on October 26 and 27, the North Valley Regional Library from October 29-November 1, and the Cave Creek Museum from November 4-10. The photos will then move to the Desert Foothills Library on November 11. Voting for the People’s Choice Award will end on November 15, but the display will remain at the Library through early December. Voting will also be available on the Land Trust’s Facebook page. Community members are invited to visit, vote and enjoy these wonderful photos!
The photographer’s top picks and the People's Choice Award winner will be announced at an awards reception for entrants to be held at the Desert Foothills Library on December 4. All photos will be used in the 2014 Mountains of the Land Trust Photo Contest calendar, which will be unveiled at that reception. Calendars will be available for sale after that reception – just in time for holiday gift-giving!
The coveted cover of the calendar will be the People’s Choice Award-winning photograph.
By calling attention to the beauty and majesty of Black Mountain and Daisy Mountain, Desert Foothills Land Trust hopes to emphasize the importance of land conservation in our communities. We can’t wait to see your photos and to celebrate the landscape we love!

Did YOU Know
Steve Jobs once said "You need a lot of passion for what you're doing because it's so hard. Without passion, any rational person would give up." Did YOU Know every major company was once a small business? Steve Jobs started in his parent's garage. That is the "American Dream" isn't it - to own your own business?
Living and working in a small town/community, we see the ups and downs of the local small business. It is a sad feeling when you see a FOR LEASE sign in the window of a restaurant you just discovered, or a FOR SALE sign in a cute boutique you were always meaning to check out. On the other hand, what a great feeling it is when you see that FOR LEASE or FOR SALE sign come down and see a new "Steve Jobs" starting his or her own "American Dream".
The words SHOP LOCAL and BUY LOCAL are very important to small business owners. The more we SHOP LOCAL or BUY LOCAL the less we see FOR SALE and FOR LEASE. To kick off our Evening Mixer on Wednesday, here are a few interesting facts about small business.
~Did YOU Know there are 28 million small businesses in the U.S. -- which out numbers corporations 1162 to 1?
~Did YOU Know 70% of small businesses are owned and operated by a single person?
~Did YOU Know small businesses employ 57% of the country's private workforce?
~Did YOU Know the 77 million people that make up the US small business workforce would rank as the 17th most populous country in the world, just ahead of Iran
~Did YOU Know it takes just 6 days to start a business in the US, compared to a whopping 38 days in China and it costs 6x as much to start a business in India than in the US? US = $325 and India = $2049.
~Did YOU Know that 69% of entrepreneurship is conducted at home?
~Did YOU Know that 73% of small businesses are now using social media? If you use Facebook and or Twitter, search for our local businesses and "Like" or Follow them - this is a great way to show your support and it's doesn't cost a cent.
~Did YOU Know that owners serve as the main marketers for 88% of small businesses. Marketing is a huge expense for most small businesses. When you stop in, let them know how you found them. Your feedback can be a huge tool as to how they will spend their marketing dollar!
We hope to see you at the Freestyle Mixer on Wednesday and you can meet and show your support of a few of our member small business owners.

Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day
Salt River Indian Community partners with
Cave Creek Museum
to Celebrate Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day on
Saturday, September 28
Cave Creek Museum re-opens for the season on Wed., Oct. 2, but the public will have a special chance to preview exhibits on Sat., Sept. 28 during the free national Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day. The event will feature revered guests from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community who will conduct demonstrations and help the Museum educate guests about their rich culture and history which dates back to the ancient Hohokam as part of the Museum's Archaeology exhibit.
The celebration takes place from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. followed by a special Pre-season member's reception from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. During the Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day, guests can view Cave Creek Museum's new and permanent indoor and outdoor exhibits, including an historic Stamp Mill dating back to 1880. The afternoon will be filled with basketry, pottery, and beadwork demonstrations.
The Museum will also be accepting pre-sale orders for its new book, "Cave Creek and Carefree." Written by Patrick Grady and Museum volunteers, the new Arcadia publication features articles on historic aspects of the two towns and an array of compelling photographs, many from the Museum collection. A special author reception and book signing is also planned for Sun., Oct. 6 from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Museum. Books are being sold for $22; all proceeds benefit the Museum.
Other highlights this season: the Museum will unveil a new exhibit dedicated to Paolo Soleri, which includes rare photographs from local architect Michael Johnson; the new "Spur Cross - Then and Now" exhibit with rare artifacts that have never been seen before; an "Assayer's Office" exhibit and the popular "A Miner's Dinner" and week-long "Cave Creek Mining Days" events in November, which celebrate the final restoration of the Museum's historic "Golden Reef" Stamp Mill. When operational in November, the Museum's Stamp Mill will be the only operational 10-Stamp Mill in the state and the only Stamp Mill in Maricopa County since the closure of the Arizona Mining and Mineral Museum in 2011, which housed a 5-Stamp Mill.
"There's a lot to celebrate this season," said Evelyn Johnson, executive director of Cave Creek Museum. "We're also expanding our children's programs and we'll be bringing back our Home Tour in the spring. There's no doubt, this will be one of our most exciting seasons."
Located at 6140 Skyline Drive, Cave Creek Museum features an extensive collection of prehistoric and historic artifacts that describe the lives of Native Americans, miners, ranchers and pioneers. The museum hours are Wed., Thurs., Sat. and Sun. from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Fri. from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Entrance fees are $5 for adults; $3 for seniors; and $2 for students. NEW ESTATE PLANNING ORGANIZATION KIT
Includes Easy-to-Understand Tools to Help You Develop an Estate Strategy
CAREFREE, Arizona, USA (September 6, 2013) – Although many may think “estate strategies” are only for the wealthy, the fact is that estate strategies are for everyone.
Edward Jones financial advisor, Noah Kendrick, brings clarity to the subject with his new Estate Planning Organization Kit, designed to help individuals begin the estate planning process.
“It’s not too early to start preparing for the future of yourself and your loved ones. While it is impossible to plan for everything, in death, as in life, proper planning makes a difference and can make it possible for you to provide for your family even after you are gone.”
Because each situation is unique, Kendrick recommends working with a team of professionals including a financial advisor, a CPA and an attorney to devise a strategy that will help to ensure family, financial assets, property and charities are taken care of according to your wishes.
The new kit includes worksheets, easy-to-understand tools and literature to begin an estate plan.

According to Kendrick, factors to consider may include:
The most important step is communication.
Do not leave your family without a will or a living trust. A will is the most basic tool you can utilize, whether your estate is large or small, a will is essential to distributing your assets.
Consider a living trust.
This allows for more flexibility. For instance, if you want to distribute different amounts of money to different heirs or charitable organizations, or even different amounts at different points in time, then you might consider a living trust.
Protect yourself and your family.
As they say, expect the unexpected. Establish a power of attorney and a health care directive while you are still physically and mentally stable.
A power of attorney allows you to appoint an “agent” to handle your affairs. A health care directive empowers those closest to you, to make decisions on your behalf regarding your healthcare.
If you have young ones in your family, make sure you name a guardian. You may also want to consider life insurance policies so that your survivors can still live the same lifestyle they had during your life.
Remember that life is constantly in flux.
It is important to update your beneficiary designations so that your annuities, 401ks and other accounts benefit the right people.
Consider how to make the most of your assets.
You may want to establish an irrevocable life insurance trust that will transfer a life insurance policy out of your estate so that your family can avoid paying hefty estate taxes.
Lastly, invest in a team of professionals.
You want security for your family and the best way to ensure this is with a comprehensive estate plan. If left in the hands of public probate, the process can be time costly, consuming and hard on your family.
