Public Invited to Preview Cave Creek Museum’s New Exhibits Before its

Official Season Opening on Wed., Oct. 1

 

(CAVE CREEK) – Cave Creek Museum re-opens for the season on Wed., Oct. 1, but the public will have a special chance to preview exhibits on Sat., Sept. 27 during the free national Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day. The celebration takes place from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. followed by a special Pre-season member’s reception from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. During the Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day, guests can view Cave Creek Museum’s new and permanent indoor and outdoor exhibits, including an historic Stamp Mill dating back to 1880.

Aspiring Eagle Scout sets his sights on enhancing the Foothills Food Bank’s inventory 

Caring about your neighbors – even those you don’t yet know, is part of being human. For Jason Ritter, a Troop 439 Life Scout from Desert Hills, Ariz., who is working towards Eagle status, giving back to a local food bank is a personal choice for his Eagle project.

Ritter, age 15, decided to plan a food drive to help stock the food inventory shelves at the Foothills Food Bank and Resource Center, which is located at 6038 E. Hidden Valley Drive in Cave Creek, Ariz. Working closely with David Newman, volunteer food drive coordinator, and Pam DiPietro, the food bank’s executive director, he now is finalizing details for the drive.

“I want to make people in the area aware that we not only need to help poor, hungry people during the holidays, but we also need to help them all year long,” says Ritter. “A dollar goes a long way.”

Ritter, in conjunction with the food bank, will hold the food re-stocking drive on September 27, 2014 from 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM. Residents are encouraged to bring pasta sauce, peanut butter and jelly, canned tuna, juice, canned beans for cooking, canned vegetables, sugar, tea, coffee, powdered milk, condiments, bars of soap, shampoo, toiletries.

Donations can be dropped of on Saturday, September 27, 2014 at Fry’s: 4185 E. Carefree Highway, Cave Creek, Ariz., 85331 and 29455 N. Cave Creek Road, Cave Creek, Ariz., 85331. So, join the drive. And, support one young’s man goal to soar like an eagle.

Fall Events and Activities

Dear Lyn,

The Land Trust is gearing up for a terrific fall, and we hope you'll join us! We have lots of great projects and events coming up with plenty of opportunities for all our donors, volunteers and ambassadors like you to participate.

One of our activities will be cleaning up following the recent flooding in our communities. Overall, these conservation properties are set aside so that natural processes like flooding can occur naturally. However, Jewel of the Creek Preserve, P.A. Seitts Preserve and New River Nature Reserve will all need some trail work and we'll be looking for some help.

Thank you for your support. We hope to see you at some of the Land Trust's upcoming events!

  

Focus on the Foothills Field Course

knowledgeable professionals as we discover what makes this area so unique. From its abundant cultural and historical resources, to its plants and animals, the area surrounding the Carefree/Cave Creek/New River mountains provides a fascinating and fun educational experience.

This course will include four Saturday classes that will take us out on a different Desert Foothills Land Trust preserve each day. All classes will start at the DFLT office before heading out to a nearby preserve. Classes will run from 9 am until approximately noon.

Our professional photographer judges will review all entries and choose their top 13 picks. We are grateful to Don Asakawa, Alan Lowy, Kazu Okutomi, Richard Rubenstein, Jerry Sieve, and Mike Spinelli for again serving as judges! Their top choice will be on the cover of our 2015 Mountains of the Land Trust Calendar and will receive one of our grand prizes. The second, third and fourth place winners will also receive prizes. Additionally, during the month of November, the public will be able to vote online for the Peoples' Choice Award Winner, who will also win a grand prize.

Cave Creek Museum Re-opens for the Season on Wed., Oct. 1

 

CAVE CREEK (Sept. 12, 2014) – Cave Creek Museum re-opens for the season on Wed., Oct. 1. Located at 6140 Skyline Drive, the Museum features an extensive collection of prehistoric and historic artifacts that describe the lives of Native Americans, miners, ranchers and pioneers. The museum hours are Wed., Thurs., Sat. and Sun. from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Fri. from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Entrance fees are $5 for adults; $3 for seniors; and $2 for students. Children 12 and under are free.

 

One of the biggest highlights of the season will be monthly demonstrations of the Museum’s historic “Golden Reef” Stamp Mill which dates back to 1880 and was used to crush hard rock ore so that gold could be separated and saved. There have not been any operational Stamp Mills in Maricopa County since the closure of the Arizona Mining and Mineral Museum in 2011, and Cave Creek Museum’s Stamp Mill is the only operational 10-Stamp Mill in the state. The schedule of monthly demonstrations will be announced on Oct. 1.

 

Another new exhibit will be “Saddle Up,” a colorful display of horse saddles dating from 1890 to 1950, including one that was made for a professional baseball player. The new “Baskets, Baskets, Beautiful Baskets” exhibit features Native American baskets dating from the 1880s to the 1930s.

The baskets are from several Arizona tribes:  Pima (O'Odham), Navajo, Apache, Havasupai, Yavapai and Papago (Tohono O'Odham). In addition, the Museum will unveil a new “Arizona’s Greatest Battle” exhibit that features history about what is considered to be the greatest recorded battle ever fought in Arizona. The 1857 battle was the last in a series of skirmishes in which the O’Odham (Pima) and Piipaash (Maricopa) fought their adversaries to the west. The exhibit will include a replica war shield, a war club, sandals and more on loan from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community.

 

Lifestyle will also be highlighted in a new bola tie and “Dirty Laundry” washing machine exhibit.

 

“The washing machine was revolutionary because it changed a woman’s life dramatically,” said Evelyn Johnson, executive director of Cave Creek Museum. “We’ll show the evolution of this household task from 1870 through 1940.”

 

The museum will host several new children’s programs throughout the year and bring back popular annual events, including “A Miner’s Dinner” in November, “Antiques Appraisal Day” in January, “Authors’ Month” in February and its biggest fundraiser of the year, “Homes Through Time” home tour in March.

Cave Creek Museum Seeks Horseshoes and Volunteers

Though Cave Creek Museum is closed for the summer, much is happening behind the scenes to prepare for the new season. The Museum, which will re-open to the public on Oct. 1, has two separate needs and is seeking the public’s assistance:

200 Horseshoes Needed for Children’s Program:

Once again, the Museum will host several children’s programs throughout the season, and Cave Creek Museum executive director Evelyn Johnson is seeking the public’s help in securing 200 horseshoes.

“We’re planning something fun that will be announced soon, but in order to pull it off, we need an estimated 200 horseshoes,” Evelyn Johnson said. “Equestrian life has always been a big part of our community’s history and we appreciate any donations.”

Call for Volunteers of All Ages:

The Museum is seeking volunteers of all ages for a variety of positions, including docents, Stamp Mill operators, a handyman and special project-based positions. Experience is not necessary, though a background in public speaking, education, hospitality, retail and merchandising, construction, and digital media will be helpful.

While volunteers are needed now to build new exhibits, the Museum is in need of volunteers throughout the season for two very large ongoing projects: Digitizing more than 20,000 documents and operating the historic Golden Reef Stamp Mill, Cave Creek’s original Stamp Mill which dates back to 1880.

Docent training orientations for volunteers are being planned as are special trainings for those who qualify for Stamp Mill operator positions. For more details or to volunteer, call(480) 488-2764, or visit www.cavecreekmuseum.org.

Celebrate your Independence!

Independence can often be related to wheels.  Peoples' Independence and mobility with a car, walker, and wheelchair is being promoted by the Caring Corps.  Imagine neighbors planning their day to revolve around finding help to meet basic needs dependent on wheels.  Wheels to get to and from you Doctor's appointments, pharmacy, grocery shopping, banking, and wheels for walking to answer the door or wheeling yourself to get out of the house , or perhaps going out for lunch.  Help your older neighbors to regain independence by volunteering through Foothills Caring Corps.  Spend two hours of your day celebrating your independence by giving independence to others.  Attend an orientation session on the second Thursday of the month to volunteer in North Scottsdale, Carefree, Cave Creek, or North Phoenix.  Celebration and gratitude for your independence could be a life changing experience for your neighbor and yourself.  Please call 480-488-1105.  Those who can, DO.  Those who can do more, VOLUNTEER.  http://www.foothillscaringcorps.com/

“Assisted Living: The Musical” on March 28, 2015, is for everyone growing older or thinking of doing so. “Wickedly funny!” proclaimed the San Francisco Examiner. Subtitled “Sex, Drugs and Gettin’ Old,” the original play by Rick Compton and Betsy Bennett tells the tale of a newly departed couple who are greeted in the afterlife by Tiny Tim. Soon the couple is revisiting “the best years of their lives” at Pelican Roost, an active senior living community peopled by numerous eccentric residents. Two accomplished actors play all 18 roles, accompanied by a pianist.

“Assisted Living: The Musical” on March 28, 2015, is for everyone growing older or thinking of doing so. “Wickedly funny!” proclaimed the San Francisco Examiner. Subtitled “Sex, Drugs and Gettin’ Old,” the original play by Rick Compton and Betsy Bennett tells the tale of a newly departed couple who are greeted in the afterlife by Tiny Tim. Soon the couple is revisiting “the best years of their lives” at Pelican Roost, an active senior living community peopled by numerous eccentric residents. Two accomplished actors play all 18 roles, accompanied by a pianist.

Desert Foothills Theater Celebrates 40 Years with

New Season of Music, Drama, Comedy, Mystery and More

In many ways, Desert Foothills Theater’s journey has played out much like its upcoming season. Since it was founded in 1975 by Anne and Carl Nusbaum, the theater has seen drama…like the time its tent, which served as the theater in the early days, was destroyed by a storm. There’s been plenty of comedy, especially during cast parties. On occasion, there’s been some mystery…like what exactly is the story behind the ghost in the little blue dress who tap dances on the stage at the Fine Arts Center when few are around? And always, there has been a wonderful mix of live music.

“This is a very special year for us,” said Meribeth Reeves, Desert Foothills Theater’s (DFT) managing director. “We celebrate our 40th anniversary during this season. In four decades, we’ve weathered two significant recessions, we moved three times, we’ve expanded our services to include youth productions, classes and workshops, and our fabulous family of actors, musicians, stage technicians, choreographers and volunteers who have helped us earn many prestigious ariZoni and National Youth Arts awards keeps growing.”

The theater is currently presenting an entertaining farce, Lend Me a Tenor, which runs through Sun., Sept. 14 in the intimate Black Box Theater of Cactus Shadows Fine Arts Center, 33606 N. 60th Street, in North Scottsdale. Written by Ken Ludwig and directed by Mark-Alan C. Clemente, this wild romp of mistaken identity, slamming doors and non-stop double entendre combine for an evening of side-splitting hilarity.

DFT’s first youth theater production of the season, The Dracula Rock Show, takes place Fri., Oct. 3 through Sun., Oct. 12. Written by Malcolm Sircom and directed by Lizzie Baggleman, The Dracula Rock Show features a cast of 20 talented performing artists ranging in age from eight to 14. The hilarious plot, eccentric characters and a dynamic score embracing 60s rock and 70s disco music will be entertaining for audience members of all ages.

Be sure to mark your calendar to attend DFT’s production of Anything Goes, set for Fri., Nov. 14 through Sun., Nov. 23 on the main stage of Cactus Shadows Fine Arts Center. Directed by Sara Bernstein, this musical farce features singing and tap dancing to a comical plot set to music by the incredible Cole Porter.

The Duke Ellington Orchestra

New York Polyphony

Steep Canyon Rangers

Mozart's Clarinet Concerto is a work of absolute genius that exquisitely displays the tone, range and agility of the clarinet, especially in the hands of featured soloist Ricardo Morales.  "Hearing the amazing Ricardo Morales play ... was riveting!" proclaimed The New York Times whose critics regard him as a star of the clarinet world. Morales is former Principal Clarinet of the New York Philharmonic and the Metropolitan Opera, and currently Principal Clarinet of The Philadelphia Orchestra and Arizona Musicfest Orchestra.

Foothills Food Bank & Resource Center to offer employment assistance

Team Job Search will assist food bank customers with job searches

 Foothills Food Bank and Resource Center will offer Team Job Search to its customers who seek employment in the Cave Creek/Carefree area. Beginning in September 2014, Team Job Search will provide workshops to assist food bank customers in finding the best job.

 Team Job Search, which was created by Richard McCarty, is a community program sponsored by the Foothills Food Bank that will help individuals reinvent the way they look for work. In today’s market place, 98% of all resumes go through an inhuman electronic screening process that rejects 75% of applications before they are viewed by a human being. Team Job Search will teach food bank customers proven techniques to ensure that applications and resumes are selected for interviews. Team Job Search will conduct meetings to introduce food bank clients to new methods for finding the right job. Workshop times and dates will be announced soon and all sessions will be held at Desert Foothills Library in Cave Creek.

 The Foothills Food Bank and Resource Center provides emergency food, financial assistance and other life necessities and resources to individuals and families in the desert foothills, which encompasses a 180-square mile area that includes Black Canyon City, Cave Creek, Carefree, Anthem, Desert Hills, New River, north Scottsdale and north Phoenix.

Foothills Food Bank Greens ‘R’ Great program takes root

Beginning in fall 2014, the 3,000 families, seniors and individuals served by the Foothills Food Bank and Resources Center will be able to reap the benefits of having fresh, organically grown and hand picked produce. Through the Greens ‘R’ Great program, the customer community of the food bank can learn how to grow and prepare their own food.

The idea for the program germinated at a gathering of local garden enthusiasts who championed an overarching goal of community nourishment and self-reliance through sweat equity and shared responsibility.

Assisting with moving “Greens’R’Great” forward are individuals and businesses that have stepped forward with generous donations of labor and materials: Cave Creek Building Supply, Elrod Fence Company, Fortezza Custom Homes, Home Depot, Lowes, Russ Lyon Sotheby’s Realty, Town of Cave Creek, Walmart, and the Greens’R’Great steering committee.

Greens‘R’Great will be a two-branched program. The first branch, a garden adjacent to the food bank premises, will be a place for the customer community to gather and help maintain the crops. The second branch will provide container plants that may be taken home and cared for. Both branches inherently will be educational and focus on teaching gardening and nutrition basics through hands-on experience.

Triple R Horse Rescue Plans Hope for Horses Gala

Second annual event to help horses in need

Triple R Horse Rescue will host the second annual Hope for Horses Gala on October 11, 2014 from 5:00 to 9:00 PM at the Carefree Resort and Conference Center in Carefree, Ariz., which is located at 37220 Mule Train Road.

"We are overwhelmed with the response we received last year for this first time event and cannot thank our community enough for the support they have shown us," says Ken Bacher, president of Triple R Horse Rescue. "We look forward to an even more magnificent and successful event this fall."

Triple R Horse Rescue held the first Hope for Horses Gala in October 2013 and raised more than $20,000 to help advance the organization's mission to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome horses in its care.

According to Ken Bacher, president of Triple R Horse Rescue, the event now will feature Mary Hoffman, a popular Mesa, Ariz.-based singer songwriter as entertainment for the event. Hoffman, winner of the Arizona State University (ASU) Idol competition in 2004 and a country music aficionado, has fronted for Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, Gary Allen, Easton Corbin, The Band Perry and other big name acts and has sung with Sugarland.

In addition, Robert J. Leary, the volunteer head coach and founder for ASU’s western equestrian team, will serve as master of ceremonies and auctioneer for the fund-raiser event. His work with the ASU team has lead to wins including the regional championship, and numerous riders have made their way to the semi and national championship competitions. Leary has worked with Triple R Horse Rescue in rehabilitating horses for adoption with the help of the ASU team.

Triple R Horse Rescue, the only horse rescue in Cave Creek, Ariz., held the first Hope for Horses Gala in October 2013 and raised more than $20,000 to help advance the organization's mission to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome horses in its care.

This year’s event also will feature dinner, silent and live auction items and special surprise announcements. As part of the charity ticket sales program, 100% of all proceeds are returned to organizations to support people in need. The Foothills Caring Corps, 7275 E. Easy Street, Carefree, Arizona, invites the community to participate in its 4th Annual Charity Golf Tournament at Mirabel Golf Club in Scottsdale on Monday, November 17.
