Salt River Indian Community partners with Cave Creek Museum to Celebrate Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day on Sept. 29

Tribal Members from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community to Conduct Basketry, Pottery, Beading and Cooking Demonstrations to Commemorate New Archaeology Exhibit

Free Event Includes Special Gift for First 100 Visitors! Official Season Starts Oct. 3

(CAVE CREEK) – On Sat., Sept. 29, thousands of Museums will participate in the free national Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day, but for Cave Creek Museum, the day will stand out as more than a chance for the public to preview exhibits prior to its official season opening on Oct. 3. That’s because this year’s event will feature revered guests from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community who will conduct demonstrations and help the Museum educate guests about their rich culture and history which dates back to the ancient Hohokam as part of the Museum’s new Archaeology exhibit. The first 100 visitors to the Museum will receive a special gift to celebrate the event.

“We are deeply honored to host this special event and to receive the support of the Salt River Indian Community,” said Evelyn Johnson, Cave Creek Museum’s executive director. “Our team of Archaeology volunteers has been working to create a new exhibit ever since they visited the Huhugam Ki Museum at the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community in 2011.”

Cave Creek Museum credits tribal members for helping them conceptualize and build the new Archaeology exhibit, which consists of an introductory panel, a time line, and sections devoted to traditional structures (including models), food processing and preparation, and clothing. Included in the clothing is a beautiful hand beaded Maricopa cape.

“Several people were instrumental in guiding us, including Huhugam Ki Museum director Gary Owens and Steve Hoza who loaned us pottery from his personal collection,” said Sue Mueller, committee member and Museum Board member. “It has been a true collaborative effort and we’re very excited to unveil the exhibit to the public.”

Along with Mueller, the team of Museum Archaeology volunteers includes Board member Mary Kearney, Alan Troxel and Nancy Zeno.

The celebration takes place from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. followed by a special Pre-season member’s reception from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. During the Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day, guests can view Cave Creek Museum’s new and permanent indoor and outdoor exhibits, including an historic Stamp Mill dating back to 1880. The afternoon will be filled with basketry, pottery, beadwork, shell etching and traditional food cooking demonstrations. In addition, an official ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place with Museum staff and members of the Salt River Indian Community.

Cave Creek Museum is located at 6140 Skyline Drive, in Cave Creek. To download free tickets to the Sept. 29 Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day, visit http://www.smithsonianmag.com/museumday/ticket/.

Desert Foothills Land Trust Announces 2012 Black Mountain Photo Contest

Capture the Beauty of Black Mountain and Celebrate Local Land Conservation!

(Carefree/Cave Creek/Scottsdale, AZ) – Desert Foothills Land Trust is pleased to announce the start of the 10th Annual Black Mountain Photo Contest! The photo contest is intended to encourage a deeper appreciation for this remarkable landmark at the heart of our Desert Foothills communities. Photos can be taken any time, but should feature Black Mountain in some way.

Complete contest rules and entry forms are available at the Desert Foothills Land Trust office at 7518 E. Elbow Bend in Carefree, as well as both the Town of Carefree and Town of Cave Creek administrative offices. Rules and entry forms are also available on the Land Trust’s website at www.dflt.org. Photo contest entries will be accepted through 4:00 pm on October 26, 2012.

Professional photographers Don Asakawa, Richard Rubenstein and Jerry Sieve will review all entries and choose 13 winning photos. These selections will be announced to the media, and these photos will then go on public display for viewing and voting for the “People’s Choice Award.” The photos will be shown at the Cave Creek Museum from November 1-9 and the Land Trust’s booth at the Cave Creek Bicycle Festival on November 10. The photos will then move to the Desert Foothills Library on November 12. Voting for the People’s Choice Award will end on November 16, but the display will remain at the Library through early December. Voting will also be available on the Land Trust’s Facebook page. Community members are invited to visit, vote and enjoy these wonderful photos!

The photographer’s top picks and the People's Choice Award winner will be announced at an awards reception to be held at the Desert Foothills Library on December 5. All photos will be used in the 2013 Black Mountain Photo Contest calendar, which will be unveiled at that reception. Calendars will be available for sale after that reception – just in time for holiday gift-giving!

The coveted cover of the calendar will be the People’s Choice Award-winning photograph. Photographs oriented horizontally are best for the calendar format, although one vertical photo will be selected for an interior feature.

By calling attention to the beauty and majesty of Black Mountain, Desert Foothills Land Trust hopes to emphasize the importance of land conservation in our communities. Choose your favorite view of the mountain, or hike the rugged trail up the mountain to get a fabulous shot. We can’t wait to see your photos and to celebrate the landscape we love!
