Southeast Corner of 56th Street and Carefree Highway
You may recall that several years ago a developer asked Scottsdale to “up zone” a parcel of land at the southeast corner of 56th Street and Carefree Highway. The zoning for the land was changed to commercial and a strip mall along Carefree Highway was planned for the site. The parcel number is 211-61-007g.
The developer requesting the “up zoning” lost the land to the bank.
Dr. Paul Dale of Paradise Valley Community College (PVCC) advises me that PVCC has purchased that parcel of land from the bank. PVCC intends to use the parcel for education purposes. PVCC owns the land between 56th and 60th south of Carefree Highway and will expand their educational facilities onto that land, most of which is currently vacant. The Holland Community Center is on a small part of the land owned by PVCC.
Upgrading/Improving Carefree Highway between Scottsdale Road and Cave Creek Road
On September 26th the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) unanimously adopted the “Rebalanced Fiscal Year 2013 Arterial Life Cycle Program”. This program documents all arterial road projects from FY2013 through FY2026 in MAG.
Upgrading/improving Carefree Highway between Scottsdale Road and Cave Creek Road continues to be noted in the plan. There are no funds ($0.00) planned to be spent on this portion of Carefree Highway through FY2026 to upgrade/improve the road.

Good letter. Thanks to your previous letter about the contractor’s bid, John was dazzled with my knowledge of the Carefree street markings.
Do you have to be a Carefree resident to submit photos for the next contest? I would love to see your husband’s photos. For being a blue moon, it was one of the intense gold moons I can remember.
Sara Vannucci
(Lyn's note: Mayor Schwan was aware that many were wondering about the markings on the streets, so figured he'd take the opportunity to clarify. Thanks, Mayor!
No, you don't have to be a Carefree resident to enter the Gardens photo contest. All are welcome to submit photos, so take your cameras and snap some great shots. We look forward to seeing next year's entries. This year's were gorgeous. Speaking of the "blue moon", Herbie thought it would be fun to add one of his blue moon shots to the CFT website. To see the blue moon rising over Black Mountain shot that he took, check our website under Letters, 9/6/12.)
