Desert Foothills Theater Kicks Off Season with
Shakespeare Parody running Sept. 10 through Sept. 20
Desert Foothills Theater (DFT), a division of the Foothills Community Foundation, kicks off its 41st season with an entertaining parody, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged (Revised), set for Thurs., Sept. 10 through Sun., Sept. 20 at the Foothills Community Foundation (FCF) Holland Community Center, 34250 N. 60th Street, in North Scottsdale.
Written by Adam Long, Daniel Singer and Jess Winfield, the DFT production is directed by Eric Schoen, a Phoenix resident who is best known for his work with the non-profit Class 6 Theatre. In this side-splitting, sonnet-fracturing parody, three actors use comedy and improvisation to perform shortened forms of several of Shakespeare’s plays.
The cast features three seasoned actors: Ari DeVriend as Adam, Bradley Beamon as Daniel, and Ryan Wentzel as Jess. But while it may seem easy to produce a show with just three actors, many factors create challenges, according to Schoen, whose hope is to produce a show with lots of lively audience interaction.
“Contrary to what people may think, this show comes with lots of challenges, including a dense, wordy, super-fast-paced script that requires comic timing, linguistic dexterity, and facility with actual Shakespeare – that’s a tall order for any actor,” Schoen said. “In addition, we’ll be in a very intimate setting, which can be disconcerting if you're not used to it.”
While many theatre companies tend to modernize productions with new approaches, Schoen does not see the need for that. “Since this show has been highly successful and world-famous for 30 years, I don't see the need to superimpose another concept on top of it. I think that would actually have a deleterious effect. The only somewhat new twist is that one of our cast members is a woman. This will give some fun turns that you normally don't get, but won't impact the overall humor of the piece,” he said.
Come ready to laugh hard and interact with the cast members. “The entire play is done from a place of joy and generosity, and I think we can all use some of that in our lives,” Schoen said. “We'll also play to the actors' strengths. This is a play that allows for that, and I'm lucky in that I have a cast of three energetic, fearless actors. The rest will depend on what the audience wants from their experience.”
DFT’s The Complete Works of William Shakespeare Abridged (Revised) is produced through special arrangement with Broadway Play Publishing, Inc. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights and at 2 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets range from $26 to $32.50 for adults and $16 to $21 for youth and students. Assassination of U.S. Senator Huey Long, the Fatal Shooting of Dr. Weiss and the Enigmatic Bullet
Luke Haag was court-appointed to participate in the examination of newly discovered evidence as well as exhumation and examination of the body of Dr. Carl Weiss, purported assassin. This evidence and the autopsy results have a story to tell that has never been seen by the public...a story that will now be shared by Mr. Haag, Criminalist/Forensic Ballistics Expert…To set the stage: Sunday night, September 8, 1935 United States Senator Huey P. Long, Jr., former Louisiana governor, was shot, and his purported assassin, Dr. Weiss, was immediately shot numerous times. Both died. No autopsies were conducted, and cause of death - homicide or an assassination – was left in question. Official police case files and major physical evidence, including a gun and bullets, disappeared shortly after. In 1991, evidence was found in the possession of a relative of the former superintendent of the Louisiana State Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Identification. Register: 480-488-2286.

Cave Creek Mayor Vincent Francia on Horse Racing

Healthy Aging
Michael Birt, PhD, director of the Center for Sustainable at ASU’s Biodesign Institute, will discuss the dramatic aging of populations around the world. The near doubling of life expectancy is among the greatest achievements in human history. While individual longevity is a cause for great celebration, “healthy” life expectancy will be the new metric of success for society. His work focuses on the promise of innovative digital and wearable technologies to help us sustain health, especially for older adults and their caregivers. Cave Creek Museum Re-opens for the Season on Thurs., Oct. 1
Free admission on Sept. 26 during Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day
Cave Creek Museum re-opens for the season on Thurs., Oct. 1. Located at 6140 Skyline Drive, the Museum features an extensive collection of prehistoric and historic artifacts that describe the lives of Native Americans, miners, ranchers and pioneers.
The public will have a special chance to preview exhibits on Sat., Sept. 26 during the free national Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day. The celebration takes place from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. followed by a special Pre-season member’s reception from 4:30 p.m. to 7 p.m.
During the Smithsonian Magazine Museum Day, guests can view Cave Creek Museum’s new and permanent indoor and outdoor exhibits, including an historic Stamp Mill dating back to 1880. The public event from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. will feature guests from the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community including staff from the Huhugam Ki Museum. They will set up for the afternoon and help educate visitors about their rich culture and history. This dates back to the ancient Hohokam which is supported by Cave Creek Museum’s current Archaeology exhibit.
The afternoon will be filled with actual basketry, pottery, leather craft, beadwork and twining demonstrations. The Museum staff will be exhibiting outdoor cooking and discussing information about indigenous foods from their community and the Sonoran desert.
Highlights of the new season include a special saddle display, monthly outside demonstrations of the historic Stamp Mill, a renovated archaeology wing, a new series of monthly History Highlight presentations and a new series of monthly family programs.
The new History Highlight presentations will take place monthly from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturdays in the historic church on the museum’s property, beginning on Saturday, Oct. 10 with “Growing Up Cave Creek.” Admission is free to Museum members and $5 for non-members. Reservations are suggested as seating is limited.
Beginning Sunday, Oct. 4, the Museum will host Family Fun Activities for children and adults the first Sunday of every month from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Family Fun Activities are free with the cost of admission, and children ages 12 and under are always admitted to the museum for free. Reservations are requested to ensure the museum has enough supplies on hand for everyone who wants to attend. Participants in the Oct. 4 “Our Desert Neighbors” program will learn about desert animals.

FALL PREVENTION EXPO
September 30th
Falls are the leading cause of death from injury among people 65 and older.
Learn to reduce risk factors associated with falls at this 5-hour event.
The public is invited to learn how to prevent trips, slips and falls leading to injury at this free Fall Prevention event, taking place from 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, September 30, at the Desert Hills Presbyterian Church, 34605 N. Scottsdale Rd, Scottsdale.
The event includes balance screenings, Yoga, Tai Chi and Qigong demonstrations, a panel discussion, equipment and resource displays, along with interactive information. Immunizations for flu, pneumonia and shingles will also be available. Depending on insurance coverage there may be additional fees. Lunch will be served with a $5 suggested donation.

According to the Area Agency on Aging in Phoenix:
• Falls are the leading cause of death from injury among people 65 and over.
• Nearly 33% of all falls in the elderly involve environmental hazards in the home.
• Failure to exercise regularly results in poor muscle tone, decreased strength, and loss of bone mass and flexibility.
According to Debbra Determan, Executive Director of the Foothills Caring Corps, fall-related injuries are often serious enough to result in hospitalization and premature death. Persons who fall often face significant declines in mobility and independence.
“The good news is that many of these risk factors are preventable. The bad news is some people believe falls are a normal part of aging and are not preventable. This is not the case,” said Determan.

Triple R Horse Rescue’s Hope for Horses Gala to benefit horses, burros in need
Every year, hundreds of horses and burros from around the country find themselves in need of forever homes. That is why Triple R Horse Rescue, a 501(c) 3 organization that rescues, rehabilitates and re-homes horses surrendered to its care, will host the third annual Hope for Horses Gala on Saturday, October 3, 2015 from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Carefree Resort and Conference Center in Carefree, Ariz. The fund-raiser helps focus the community on the rescue, rehabilitation and re-homing of the horses in its care.
According to Ken Bacher, president of Triple R Horse Rescue, the 2015 event will feature Mary Hoffman, a popular Mesa, Ariz.-based singer songwriter, as entertainment for the event. Hoffman, winner of the Arizona State University (ASU) Idol competition in 2004 is a country music aficionado. In addition, Robert J. Leary, the volunteer head coach and founder for ASU’s western equestrian team, will serve as master of ceremonies and auctioneer for the event.
This year’s event also will feature dinner, silent and live auction items, live western entertainment and surprise announcements. Several sponsorship opportunities are available to support the event. Children of all ages can learn about animals, gold mining, recycling and even calligraphy at Cave Creek Museum this season. Beginning Sunday, Oct. 4, the Museum will host Family Fun Activities for children and adults the first Sunday of every month from 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.
Cave Creek Museum, which closes over the summer, will re-open for the 2015-2016 season on Thursday, Oct. 1. The museum features an extensive collection of prehistoric and historic artifacts that describe the lives of Native Americans, miners, ranchers and pioneers.

Desert Foothills Land Trust Applying for Renewal of National Accreditation
The land trust accreditation program recognizes land conservation organizations that meet
national quality standards for protecting important natural places and working lands forever. Desert Foothills Land Trust was first accredited in December 2010, and is pleased to announce that we are applying for renewal of our accredited status. A public comment period is now open.
The Land Trust Accreditation Commission, an independent program of the Land Trust Alliance, conducts an extensive review of each applicant’s policies and programs. Empty Bowls project planned to feed the hungry
Proceeds to benefit Foothills Food Bank & Resource Center
On Friday, October 16, 2015, the annual Foothills Empty Bowls Project to honor World Hunger Day will be held at the Carefree Town Center in Carefree, Ariz., from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM.
The event luncheon meal, to be catered by Cave Creek’s Harold’s Corral, will be served in handmade ceramic or glass bowls. For a minimum donation of $15, guests can select their own unique bowl made by members and friends of the Sonoran Arts League, and keep it as a lasting reminder of world hunger. All proceeds from the lunch will be donated to the Foothills Food Bank & Resource Center, and will support its ongoing effort to provide emergency food and services to area families in need of assistance.
The Empty Bowls Project is sponsored by the Sonoran Arts League, the Town of Carefree, Harold’s Corral, Marjon Ceramics & Laguna Clay and Costco. Other donors are Basha’s, Saguaro and Cactus Shadows High School students, Arizona Clay, Sonoran Trails MS, Paradise Valley Community College ceramics students and local potters and artists who made and donated the bowls and auction items.

Car show to benefit Foothills Food Bank & Resource Center
On Saturday, October 17, 2015, the fifth Tatum Ranch Car Show will take place from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Tatum Ranch Golf Club, which is located at 29888 N. Tatum Ranch Drive in Cave Creek, Ariz. After a quick evaluation it was clear this Ben was perfect for a different type of program. Our service program. As a service dog Ben will have a very special set of requirements. He will not be driven to a field and go to work or to train at certain times. He will be 100% on duty all the time. To place Ben in this program he has to pass a rigourous physical test and vetting. Hip checks, blood tests, xrays, ultra sounds, shots etc.
Please help us raise the funding to get Ben through the physical testing and with a Service Handler.

13 Not An Unlucky Number
Who says 13 is unlucky? Not the Foothills Animal Rescue Resale Boutique. Having just completed our second quarter with at 13% increase we are all feeling pretty lucky. Under the creative leadership of co-managers Dixie & Lisa the boutique has become a destination shopping experience. The volunteers (our lifeblood), are processing the inventory from a very generous community, ensuring new treasurer’s daily. It solidifies just how important our pets are to us in this community.
All proceeds from the Resale Boutique benefit our life saving efforts. To date we have found new loving homes for 275 dogs and cats that were rescued from overcrowded Maricopa County Animal Care & Control through our New Hope partnership. Sadly, there's no summer vacation from suffering for orphaned, abused and neglected animals in our area. So we can't take a break.
The statement “it takes a village” rings true with the commitment and dedication of our 38 volunteers that process, clean, merchandise and promote our Resale Boutique. If you have not had a chance to visit, we invite you to explore the many unique and wonderful items (pet goods, men’s and women’s clothing, furniture, artwork, jewelry, housewares, bedding and the list goes on) that we have to offer.

Good Afternoon Friends of the Museum!
I’m hoping your summer is progressing well! And to think, it’s already the 4th of July! As many of you know, although the Museum is closed, it does not mean our doors aren’t open to volunteers and members alike. We are all working furiously on preparing the Museum for our next season!
We are breaking down our previous exhibits, some to be replaced with brand new exhibits, and others just getting a good cleaning and touch ups! It’s always an exciting time of year for us! Plus, it’s a good place to cool off! If any of you would like to join us in preparing for next season, please give us a call!
We also have a lot of new events for the upcoming season, so please be sure to check our website regularly to stay on top of new happenings. We will be teaming up with local businesses and artists to offers classes and seminars for our community. Some events will have limited space, so be sure to reserve your spot as soon as possible!

Foothills Food Bank & Resource Center seeks van drivers
The Foothills Food Bank & Resource Center is in need of volunteer drivers to pick-up and drop off food and related items for the food bank. Because requests for food assistance have intensified, van drivers are needed to help ensure the families that are served by Foothills Food Bank & Resource Center receive the food and personal items they so desperately need.
According to executive director Pam DiPietro, Foothills Food Bank seeks individuals with an SUV or small truck who can work one to two days a week for two hours to pick up and transport donated food. Food pick-ups, which range in size/weight, typically are conducted during early morning hours between 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM.
“The need is critical as we cannot feed those in need without volunteers,” says DiPietro.

Do you want to make a difference in your own life and the lives of others?
The Foothills Caring Corps, a volunteer based non-profit organization serving the greater NE Valley, is seeking volunteers to share their talent, skills and time with the organization whose primary mission is to allow the elderly to remain independent and living in their homes.
Volunteers needed for such programs as:
-Van transportation
-Medical transportation
-Mobile meals
-Minor home repair
-Friendly visits
-Medical loan closet
The Foothills Caring Corps aims to provide a rewarding and gratifying experience for both the volunteer and the neighbor. Volunteers are given training, guidance and monitoring to ensure a quality experience. They are allowed to self-select areas in which they would like to be involved and are not required to contribute a minimum number of hours.
“The Caring Corps opens their arms to people with a variety of skills levels, talent and interests. Everyone has an something to contribute.”
The organization conducts monthly Volunteer Orientation sessions from 9 – 11 a.m. at the Foothills Caring Corps offices located at 7275 E. Easy Street, Suite B103, Carefree.

Mesa Fire Dept Saves Dog with Fetch Foundation Equipment!
Mesa Fire E217 used the Fetch Foundation Fido Bag to save a dog after a house fire. "We're pleased to report the dog is doing well! We're happy we have special equipment on our apparatus to watch out for our extended family members."

In appreciation of having their cherished Samson saved the Liningers donated several FIDO Bags through The Fetch Foundation to be delivered to other fire departments so others family pets can be saved.

Firefighters look on as the scared but healthy pup stands up. It was a victory for these animal-loving heroes, the family...and the pup!
Scully Learning Center was developed to provide Experiences to enrich the lives of our developmentally disabled participants. The Center is located on the banks of Cave Creek. The facility includes an organic garden; chickens, ducks, goats and tortoises;
computers; fully equipped kitchen; a fully equipped ceramic studio and several other art creation sites. In addition we provide opportunities for hiking and a variety of field trips. We recently added 3 Strider Pedaless Bikes and have added a race track to our wish list. We are staffed exclusively by volunteers and always welcome new ideas and new participants.

Team Job Search will assist food bank customers with job searches
Foothills Food Bank and Resource Center will offer Team Job Search to its customers who seek employment in the Cave Creek/Carefree area. Beginning in September 2014, Team Job Search will provide workshops to assist food bank customers in finding the best job.
Team Job Search, which was created by Richard McCarty, is a community program sponsored by the Foothills Food Bank that will help individuals reinvent the way they look for work. In today’s market place, 98% of all resumes go through an inhuman electronic screening process that rejects 75% of applications before they are viewed by a human being. Team Job Search will teach food bank customers proven techniques to ensure that applications and resumes are selected for interviews. Team Job Search will conduct meetings to introduce food bank clients to new methods for finding the right job. Workshop times and dates will be announced soon and all sessions will be held at Desert Foothills Library in Cave Creek.

Learn a new craft, hear a lecture, exercise your brain and more at the Foothills Community Foundation
Are you looking to learn a new craft or skill, like card making, digital photography or acting? Do you want to expand your mind by hearing a fascinating lecture or viewing a colorful art show? Or, maybe you’re up for a good game of Bingo or Bridge? These are just some of the many classes, events and activities offered for local residents of all ages at the Foothills Community Foundation’s (FCF) Holland Community Center, 34250 N. 60th Street, Bldg. B, in Scottsdale.
“We’re so fortunate to live in a community that cherishes arts and entertainment, that cares about sustainability and that welcomes the chance to learn from others,” said Chris Winger, FCF president and CEO. “Take advantage of our Holland Community Center…not only will you expand your mind, you’re sure to make some new friends or re-connect with old ones.”
FCF classes at the Holland Community Center include Brain Games, Bridge, Digital Photography, Adobe Photoshop Elements, an “Art Relaxation and Herbal Teas” class that includes Tai Chi relaxation exercises, and two Focus on Your Health classes about finding health help in the home and getting through the holidays after experiencing a loss.
Desert Foothills Theater (DFT) and the Desert Awareness Committee are also part of the Foothills Community Foundation. Located at 6140 Skyline Drive, the Cave Creek Museum features an extensive collection of prehistoric and historic artifacts that describe the lives of Native Americans, miners, ranchers and pioneers. The museum hours are Wed., Thurs., Sat. and Sun. from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Fri. from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Entrance fees are $5 for adults; $3 for seniors; and $2 for students. Children 12 and under are free.
One of the biggest highlights of the season will be monthly demonstrations of the Museum’s historic “Golden Reef” Stamp Mill which dates back to 1880 and was used to crush hard rock ore so that gold could be separated and saved. There have not been any operational Stamp Mills in Maricopa County since the closure of the Arizona Mining and Mineral Museum in 2011, and Cave Creek Museum’s Stamp Mill is the only operational 10-Stamp Mill in the state. The schedule of monthly demonstrations will be announced.

Large and heavy stamp mills were used in the late 1800s and through the 1920s to crush hard rock ore so that the gold could be separated and saved. At one time, many such mills were reported to exist in the Cave Creek Mining District. The Museum’s “Golden Reef Mine Stamp Mill” was declared to be an Arizona State Historic Property by Arizona State Parks in 1986. The Museum is particularly pleased to showcase this 10-Stamp Mill that came from its own mining district and was originally located on Continental Mountain.
