CAREFREE TRUTH
Letters from Readers: 3/24/10
Dear Town Manager Usama Abujbarah:
Beth Duckett’s article in the Scottsdale Republic attributed a statement that you considered the Sonoran News to be like Fox News.
With all due respect, Fox News is fair and balanced whereas the Sonoran News is biased. For years, I have searched high and low for both sides of a story, but without success.
It is not a question of whether one likes, or does not like what is printed; most readers would welcome facts not figments. Yes, the newspaper generates a lot of attention; unfortunately, most of it is negative and divisive. Editorial opinions should be reserved for the editorial pages and not for the news.
While it is sad that both Cave Creek and Carefree may be without a weekly newspaper, the lack of reader support and advertizing may be a result of people becoming tired of the venom.

This was sent to Carefree Town Hall and to Carefree Truth:
DEDICATION?????? PLEASE DISTRIBUTE TO ALL COUNCILPERSONS
COUNCILMEN COADY AND KOTEAS,
I BELIEVE CONGATULATIONS ARE IN ORDER. YOU ALL HAVE AGAIN PROVEN YOUR DEDICATION TO OUR TOWN OF CAREFREE BY TAKING THE TIME TO ATTEND THE "CONCOCTED" CEREMONY TO HONOR MR.SORCHYCH. FOR YEARS NOW HE HAS MANAGED TO DENEGRATE CAREFREE GOVERNMENT AND THE RESIDENTS WITH HIS DISTORTED PUBLICATION. ONE NEED NOT WONDER WHY THAT PAPER HAS FAILED.
YOU BOTH OBVIOUSLY DO NOT RECOGNIZE THIS FACT. YOU MANAGE TO PROVE ,WITH THIS ACTION, THAT THE TWO OF YOU ARE NOT WORTHY TO BE OUR COUNCILMEN. PLEASE DO ALL OF US A FAVOR. REEVALUATE YOUR PURPOSE IN OFFICE, BUCKLE DOWN AND DO SOMETHING BENEFICIAL FOR THE TOWN, OR STEP DOWN AND LET A MORE WORTHY PERSON HAVE THE JOB. BY NO MEANS ALLOW JOHN TRAYNOR TO ENTER YOUR THOUGHTS AS A PERSPECTIVE COUNCILMAN, AS HE IS AS COMPLACENT ABOUT CAREFREE RESIDENTS AS BOTH OF YOU. BOB,YOUR ACTIONS IN THIS REGARD TEND TO MAKE ALL THAT RECYCLE EFFORT A WASH! CONTINUE ON YOUR PRESENT COURSE AND YOU WILL BE JUST A TRIVIAL AFTERTHOUGHT NEXT ELECTION. YOU CAN TAKE THAT TO THE BANK!!!

Mr. Coady can make an attempt next year to try to realize his lust for the Mayor's office. Next year he can try to get on the ballot and run for the office of mayor with whoever else might chose to run. Too bad he won't be able to use the bullet vote concept to achieve his goal. It will be one man one vote. Bullet voting gave us three non-performing council members in the last election. Also too bad this same tactic can still be used in the next council election. The Arizona Supreme Court allowed for bullet voting in one of the worst opinions they have made.
Thanks to Mayor Fulcher for setting the record straight on the investigation.

Extract from Scottsdale Republic editorial on March 12th.
--Carefree voters said they don't like having their elections hijacked. They overwhelmingly rejected a misguided attempt to recall Mayor David Schwan.
More people voted Tuesday than in last year's primary and general elections. They gave Schwan more votes than all but one candidate received last year. His own vote total jumped 46 percent.
The message should be clear: Capricious use of recall law is not welcome.
The proper time to measure candidates is at regular elections.
(Lyn's note: The final official count showed that Mayor Schwan received the highest number of votes ever recorded in Carefree.)
Mr. Sorchych -
Your "My View" column this week (March 17, 2010) reeks of sour grapes. It would be quite laughable, if it wasn't such a pathetic statement of your deprecating opinion of the Carefree citizenry . . . you know, those elitist, clueless souls who are being directed by the nefarious GOBs from the local Kiwanis chapter. I would suggest that a 58+ percent majority states the case quite well for where the superior mass of townspeople's sentiments lie, and those sentiments are certainly not with your weekly newspaper of self-anointed brilliantly written compositions, a document probably better referred-to as a "tabloid of tripe." No wonder you feel the need to relentlessly beseech the few readers who take your writing seriously to save your heinous, solipsistic, and sophomorically written rag. For anyone to attempt to assist your tabloid's sustenance with a monetary donation would be akin to foolishly tossing money into a rat hole. Insofar as your future survival efforts are concerned . . . good luck.
And the fact that a few journalistic awards might have been directed to your newspaper and to your columns doesn't mean that what you have written, the content that is, is factual. Unsubstantiated innuendo and recurring failures to provide exemplars of accusations of wrongdoing, and all written under the protection of "editorial opinion," are by no means indicators of admirable, credible reportage. You should just be thankful that the award judges are not evaluating such attributes as proper sentence structure, appropriately used syntax, correct punctuation, and the ability to avoid such grammatical errors as dangling participles, misplaced modifiers, and any number of other failures of English grammar that afflict your newspaper's writing.
We haughty, pompous, social-climbing citizens of Carefree who supported Mayor Schwan in his victory over the frivolous and capricious recall effort are basking in our momentous and emphatic win. And we will experience similar feelings when the Sonoran News is finally, and permanently, kaput. In the meantime, Mr. Sorchych, enjoy your lonely existence in cyberspace. And don't be too dismayed when the cards and letters full of donations just don't seem to be materializing.

To The Citizens of Carefree:
Councilman Bob Coady once again spins a fairy tale about his misdeeds and displays his total lack of understanding of basic business and legal principles. He crows about the fact that the Maricopa County Attorney’s office declined to prosecute him for the Misuse of Public Funds which is a class 4 felony under ARS 35-301. He criticizes former Mayor Wayne Fulcher for asking the County Attorney’s office to investigate and said it cost the Town time and money. He fails to acknowledge that had he not violated a basic sound business practice none of this would have ever happened. He is the cause of time and money being spent by the Town and the County.
What you need to know is that the County Attorney found enough cause to conduct an extensive investigation over a number of months. This was done because Councilman Coady improperly opened a bank account into which he deposited Town Funds in his own name (with bank statements mailed to his home) without the knowledge of any of the Town Staff, Councilmen, or Mayor. If Councilman Coady had worked for any company in the world he would have been fired as soon as this was discovered. Had there not been probable cause no such investigation would have been undertaken. The mere fact that the County Attorney’s office declined to prosecute does not mean Councilman Coady did nothing wrong. On the contrary, the evidence needed in a court of law to convict a person of a felony is a very high. The County attorney’s office decided it was not worth the effort when it is embroiled in so many other problems.
Obviously, Mr. Coady must have known he was in deep do as he hired attorney David Burnell Smith to defend him. If you will recall, Mr. Smith has the distinction of being the only elected official in the country to be removed from office for cheating under the clean election law. Smith then took his case to a string of courts only to loose in the Arizona Supreme Court. Smith, then ran for the Carefree Town Council and hired that other spin master Ryan Ducharme (who has been accused of sexually harassing women) who just failed in his and Rod deSzendeffy’s attempt (supported by Mr. Coady) to recall Mayor Schwan. As you know, Mr. DeSzendeffy has no regard for the law having violated Carefree zoning laws on two occasions. He went to court and lost in court and on appeal. In a court action Mr. Coady brought against me he lost. Mr. Coady felt the need to hire an attorney while I represented myself. Mr. Coady hired his good friend Rod DeSzendeffy’s wife to represent him.
After you look at the people and the deeds they have done you have to ask yourself about the honesty, and character of Mr. Coady. As they say, birds of a feather flock together.

Hi Lyn:
Lester and I thank you for adding us to your "Truth" list and look forward to receiving your e-mails from time to time. Keep up the good work.
This is not particular to Town of Carefree news but for your own edification, last Sonoran News issue with front page story "Hot Dog Guy has new view location, Magic Bird appropriates old high-visibility corner"...story implies that Magic Bird may have somehow conspired to have hot dog guy removed in order to take over use of that corner...just another of Don's and Linda's fabrications. First of all, Linda Bentley did not contact or attempt to contact me. Second, way back in November I actually asked hot dog guy how to utilize that corner and told him what I wanted to do and he happily told me how he got permission and I did the same. Magic Bird began parking my sign truck alongside hot dog man four days a month for the past 5 months and if hot dog man asked we would move our truck to accommodate his visibility needs. Third, Linda Bentley's story says "...Lester Rechlin, who owns Magic Bird,..." Lester Rechlin does not nor has he ever owned Magic Bird Festivals, LLC. I am sole owner.
Don Sorchych's Sonoran News has a consistent history of running stories without checking the facts, particularly when the story concerns someone on his "hate list". That is the category he should win an award for!
