(Lyn's note: Please feel free to send us any pictures you'd like included. If your photos are for sale, let us know and we will put them under that category. We have a special section for that purpose, and have just added some art as well. Check out Tom Baker's photos for sale. He's the photographer who took that gorgeous photo in the Carefree Gardens Photo Contest that was both the judges' first pick and the public favorite. It's now featured on the Town of Carefree website, and will be the cover of the 2014 Gardens calendar that will be for sale later this summer at Carefree Town Hall. If anyone would like to buy a print of any of Herbert's photos, all profits will be donated to one of the local non-profit organizations.) Here's the link to this week's Pictures of the Week.

Have a fantastic week!!
Hi Lyn, We have been trying for months to sign a new lease since our 10 yr. lease was expiring at the end of the year. We thought we were almost there, then a condition was given to us that we would not agree to. Apparently, without notice, that was a deal breaker. The landlord claimed default and locked us out. They say their last offer is still there. It is sad. There will probably be some attorney contact over the next couple of days. We will see what happens. If nothing good happens, I would like to thank our customers for their long support through Carefree Truth, if that is OK. We feel terrible for our customers and our staff, who are now unemployed. I will keep you informed.
Thanks for your concern,
Robert & Linda
(Lyn's note: I emailed Robert and Linda asking what had happened. This is the reply. As Carefree Station is one of our favorite restaurants, we are REALLY hoping that this can be resolved and that Carefree Station will be back soon.)
Dear Valued Customer:

Shortly after midnight, this past Saturday morning, the landlord locked out the business owners of our most popular Carefree restaurant. The owners, Bob and Linda, have been in negotiations, for months, with the new building owner...and reportedly have been paying less rent than is called for. Their new Prescott Station restaurant in Prescott is quite successful, I am told. Maybe they will settle this, or maybe they are now just another of the 4 restaurants in Carefree to close up in the past two years; (Bad Donkey, Sabas, Dukes and now them?)
In addition a long time Hair Salon on easy street is closing up, too.
"Last one out of town turn off the lights" !!!! JVA
(Lyn's note: As of 3:00 PM on Tuesday afternoon, October 1st, Carefree Station is still working to resolve the issues with the landlord, and they are hoping to return to the space.
Dukes was never successful. Frankly, the food was lousy, the corny rustic Roy Rogers/John Wayne old TV/movie cowboy atmosphere was not what most in Carefree sought, and the management was unpleasant, at least they were to me and to several others I know. There is no way I would eat there, and I am gung ho to support the local merchants.
Saba's closed, as was explained in Carefree Truth, because the owner is a senior flight attendant for U.S. Air, and their merger with American Airlines relocated Oscar's base to Philadelphia. The family's health insurance benefits are through Oscar's job with the airlines, so they moved to the East coast. It is my understanding from Oscar that another restaurant is going into that space, and has paid the rent for a year in advance.
Brix Wine has gone into the space vacated by the Bad Donkey.
Beauty and Bliss Hair Salon is simply moving to another, larger, space in Carefree, in the Basha's center, as you can see by their email above.
Hello Lyn,
I just had a quick question. Do you know if the 50 acres of land on the northern boarder of Carefree that the town is going to preserve is raw desert?
Best,
Morgan Rath
(Lyn's note: Yes, the 50 acres owned by Carefree are in their natural state, as are the 10 adjoining acres in Maricopa County that were donated to the Desert Foothills Land Trust. The land in that area is not easily buildable due to the terrain, and it is exceptionally lovely.)
Hi Lyn, Jan Misseri here. Just would like to put a little something in the great "Carefree Truth". Please feel free to contact me either by email - casbin@aol.com or by phone - 480-488-5182.

Ten Workouts Can Make a Difference in the Fight Against Breast Cancer
Curves, the largest fitness club chain in the world for women and a leader in the weight management category, today announced that in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, residents in Cave Creek/Carefree are invited to purchase a $10 punch card for 10 workouts at Curves with proceeds going to American Cancer Society. The 10 workouts can be done in honor of someone who has battled breast cancer and a poster will be up in the Club for each participant to sign as a way to show community support. The famous 30-minute Curves Circuit features a full body workout with strength training and cardio.
"The Curves mission is to strengthen women and this promotion helps us do just that," says Barbara Hatton, owner Curves of Cave Creek/Carefree. "The punch card is a fun way for women to get involved and help punch out cancer, but it also gives us the opportunity to teach the importance of exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy weight. After all, 30 minutes of 'me' time is always a good thing."
"Women are always looking for new, unique ways to help make a difference in the fight against breast cancer. The Curves 10-Workout Punch Card is a great way to not only donate money to a special cause, but it is also a fun way to help improve your own personal health," said Mike Raymond, vice president of marketing for Curves International, Inc. "Breast cancer continues to be among the most common cancer for women worldwide. We are honored to be aiding in the fight."
This offer is limited to one (1) 10 workout punch card per person. Not valid with any other offer, no cash value and new fitness members only at participating locations. 10 visits must be completed by November 15, 2013. May be exchanged for first visit discount, based on first visit enrollment, minimum 12-month check draft program. Contract terms may vary by state.

New Estate Planning Kit Includes Easy-to-Understand Tools to Help You Develop an Estate Strategy
Although many may think "estate strategies" are only for the wealthy, the fact is that estate strategies are for everyone.
Edward Jones financial advisor, Noah Kendrick, brings clarity to the subject with his new Estate Planning Organization Kit, designed to help individuals begin the estate planning process.
"It's not too early to start preparing for the future of yourself and your loved ones. While it is impossible to plan for everything, in death, as in life, proper planning makes a difference and can make it possible for you to provide for your family even after you are gone."
Because each situation is unique, Kendrick recommends working with a team of professionals including a financial advisor, a CPA and an attorney to devise a strategy that will help to ensure family, financial assets, property and charities are taken care of according to your wishes.
The new kit includes worksheets, easy-to-understand tools and literature to begin an estate plan.
To learn more about how to safeguard your wishes with a free estate planning organization kit, contact Noah Kendrick, 480-595-2041 or visit 37555 Hum Road, Suite 205 in Carefree.
According to Kendrick, factors to consider may include:
The most important step is communication.
Do not leave your family without a will or a living trust. A will is the most basic tool you can utilize, whether your estate is large or small, a will is essential to distributing your assets.
Consider a living trust.
This allows for more flexibility. For instance, if you want to distribute different amounts of money to different heirs or charitable organizations, or even different amounts at different points in time, then you might consider a living trust.
Protect yourself and your family.
As they say, expect the unexpected. Establish a power of attorney and a health care directive while you are still physically and mentally stable.
A power of attorney allows you to appoint an "agent" to handle your affairs. A health care directive empowers those closest to you, to make decisions on your behalf regarding your healthcare.
If you have young ones in your family, make sure you name a guardian. You may also want to consider life insurance policies so that your survivors can still live the same lifestyle they had during your life.
Remember that life is constantly in flux.
It is important to update your beneficiary designations so that your annuities, 401ks and other accounts benefit the right people.
Consider how to make the most of your assets.
You may want to establish an irrevocable life insurance trust that will transfer a life insurance policy out of your estate so that your family can avoid paying hefty estate taxes.
Lastly, invest in a team of professionals.
You want security for your family and the best way to ensure this is with a comprehensive estate plan. If left in the hands of public probate, the process can be time costly, consuming and hard on your family.
