Letters from Readers & Events: 11/27/13 Part #1
Lyn's note: Please feel free to send us any pictures you'd like included. If your photos are for sale, let us know and we will put them under that category. We have a special section for that purpose, and have just added some art as well. Check out Tom Baker's photos for sale. He's the photographer who took that gorgeous photo in the Carefree Gardens Photo Contest that was both the judges' first pick and the public favorite. It's now featured on the Town of Carefree website, and will be the cover of the 2014 Gardens calendar that will be for sale later this summer at Carefree Town Hall. If anyone would like to buy a print of any of Herbert's photos, all profits will be donated to one of the local non-profit organizations.) Here's the link to this week's Pictures of the Week.

Hi Lyn,
I hope all is well with you and Herbie. Thanks again for all your support for the successful Healing of Memories for Veterans Workshop.
I wanted to let you know that through my work in helping veterans I met a magnetic and energetic wounded warrior named Brian Mancini and I was fascinated by his story. He enlisted in the Army after high school in 1996 and was trained as a medic. He completed his service in 2000 and started college. When 9-11 hit he felt that it was his patriotic duty to reenlist since he knew they would need trained medics. On his second tour to Iraq he was very seriously wounded and spent 18 months in Walter Reed recovering. Last summer he decided to dedicate his life to helping wounded warriors like himself reintegrate into their communities. He started a nonprofit called Honor House http://www.thehonorhouse.org/ He is using what he learned on his journey, especially things he did on his own to help himself heal and reintegrate, to help wounded vets who are on the same journey but at an earlier stage. He feels that a major need these vets have is self help tools.
His latest initiative is to provide 15 wounded warriors with a Samsung Galaxy Note tablet loaded with apps that will be good resources to help them with their healing and reintegration. He wants to present them at a December 21 event. Right now his main problem is that he needs donations of $600 each for the 15 tablets. He said he has had 5-6 donations so far. I wonder if you could get the word out via Carefree Truth and have people contact me at michael_w_wold@msn.com or 651-687-9767 if they would like to donate a tablet to a wounded warrior.
Thanks
Mike Wold
Gee, wonderful. I'm sure the sound levels will never invade the peace and quiet of Carefree, just as Cave Creek bars' music do not.
And these sails must turn with the path of the sun to keep shadows where they belong, protecting folks from whatever it is in Arizona they did not expect to find here.
And of course, these sails will be fully weatherproof and immune to the summer monsoons when they arrive.
Golly, Carefree gets more wonderful by the week!
Jim Raymond
(Lyn's note: I understand your concerns, but I don't believe evening events in the Pavilion will equate to the intrusiveness of Cave Creek's bar music, which can go on until 2 AM, when the bars close. Evening events in the Pavilion are generally hosed by local non profit organizations, and are over by 9PM, or 10PM at the latest.
The new sails are designed to cover the Pavilion, providing shading everywhere. The fabric does need to be replaced occasionally, as does all outside fabric, due to weather exposure, but the material in use has held up well, and has only been replaced once.)
Lyn, I appreciate your thoughts, but you know how sound travels in the desert, especially after sundown.
The thrust of all this is how precious we are getting, how intensely precious. Carefree's festivals of every description and this $300 K "improvement" all seem measures to ward off real estate taxes, and I begin to wonder how much it is all worth when our town center is all but take over from us as commerce is pursued to ward off these taxes -- the amount of which I have no idea.
It gets to the point where personally I might be inclined to pay more tax simply to have our quiet town back and let the festivals go elsewhere. OR, charge so much for each festival participant that just one festival would be so prestigious it would generate enough revenue to pay the town as much as all the others do. I believe Fountain Hills has done this with great success.
Jim
(Lyn's note: Hi, again, Jim. The 300K budgeted for the Pavilion improvements was high, as is standard when formulating a budget. The final contracts call for expenditures of approximately $216,000, and are funded through a 250K donation.
While there are some who are willing to pay a property tax, I think the majority feel sufficiently taxed already between the federal, state, and county taxes, and local sales tax.
I attend the festivals and I see a lot of people there that I know, so there are a significant number of locals who enjoy them, and some even participate as vendors. The art shows start at 10 AM and end at 5 PM, and are as high end as Fountain Hills, if not higher. Fountain Hills hosts huge art shows (MUCH larger than anything Carefree hosts) twice a year, and has occasional smaller ones as well. Booth fees are determined and charged by the promoters. The promoters, not the hosting towns, keep the booth fees. Most towns, Carefree included, charge the vendors a licence fee, and for shows that charge admission, the town and the promoter split the fee. Only the 3 Thunderbird shows charge to enter, and entry is free to Carefree residents.
The evening events tend to be local non-profit fundraisers, are pretty low key, and are over at a reasonable time. The Foothills Animal Rescue event held last Thursday was over before 8PM. I would think that the commercial buildings surrounding the Pavilion would provide somewhat of a sound barrier as well. The bars in Cave Creek do not have that advantage.
There is obviously no "right" answer to make everyone happy. Our Council members serve on a volunteer basis, and each Council does what it feels is best for the town as a whole. I do believe that most who have served have done so with the best intentions, and truly do care about our town, it's citizens, and it's business owners. But it's all a fine line, and there is no pleasing everyone. Some want Carefree to be very quiet, with little to no activity or commerce. Others complain that there is too little to do in town, so they are forced to go elsewhere for fun.
Have a happy Thanksgiving, Jim.)

Arizona Musicfest Holiday Musicale
Arizona Musicfest is pleased to offer a richly flavored Holiday Musicale at Vi at Silverstone on Thursday, December 5, 2013 (5pm-8pm), featuring members of Grammy Award winning Phoenix Chorale and Phoenix Youth Symphony violinist David Kwak. The concert will be followed by a four-course gourmet dinner created by Jeff Weston, Executive Chef of Vi at Silverstone. Chef Weston has appeared on Good Morning Arizona, Sonoran Living, Your Life A to Z and other popular television shows.

Hosts and Co-Hosts have covered all Musicale-related expenses, allowing your ticket price to fully support our annual festival, Youth Education and Young Musicians programs.

Foothills Food Bank & Resource Center Launches Adopt-a-Family Program
The Foothills Food Bank & Resource Center is joining with several other organizations to brighten the holiday season for children, families and seniors in the northern Arizona foothills community. More than a dozen local organizations and churches are working to provide gifts, holiday meals and hope for those in crisis in the community.
Individual donors as well as donor groups such as businesses, HOAs, churches, and school classmates are encouraged to participate in this year’s program by providing gifts for a family, children, or seniors in our community. Donors indicate the size of the family they are willing to adopt, and a Family Wish List will be provided to serve as a shopping guide. There is no minimum donation and shopping assistance is available for monetary donations to support the program. Checks are payable to the Foothills Food Bank. All gifts and donations are tax deductible according to tax laws.
For more information on the Adopt-a-Family 2013 program or to request a donor sign-up form, email AdoptaFamily2013@gmail.com or call co-chairs Jeanne Panhorst at 480-595-8584 or Judi Anderson at 480-540-7631.

Dear Lyn,
Last year I was thrilled that you publicized our annual fundraiser in Carefree Truth. Every year the community’s support helps the Desert Foothills Woman’s Club make this event a success, and we appreciate your consideration.
At this time I am requesting that you insert the Save the Date Aloha Luau attachment into your newsletter and in about two weeks the other attachment, Luau2. After New Years I will send you the full press release.
I admire the work you and your husband are doing for the town of Carefree. Keep up the great work. You are an example of devoted dedication, otherwise you could not possibly sustain the work you both are continually doing to bring the information to your citizens.
Thank you,
Nedra Williams
